Did crossover dilution already happen in the Godzilla series?

Post by Deviloecus »

Many people (Including myself) are critical of how the Monsterverse going forward seems to be just making movies with both Godzilla and Kong because we feel it makes the crossover element feel less special.

But I've wondered recently if the Godzilla series has already done something like this.

It took Mothra 32 years to have a movie without Godzilla, she had two chances but those were botched due to production hurdles. And Rodan only has one movie for himself, americans wanted to give him the hollywood treatment and a solo game was planned but those fell through.

And when you think of both monsters you are more than likely to think of them as Godzilla characters specifically and I could say the same for nearly every other Toho monster that debuted without Godzilla.

I'm just wondering with the route the Monsterverse is going if something similar will happen to Kong

Doubt it, Kong is so well known that I doubt he'll ever be thought of as a "Godzilla monster".

I know that one of the planned solo Mothra films you're referring to is Mothra vs. Began (planned around 1990), but what was the other one?

Kong's just got much more of a celebrated history than Mothra, so I don't think it's comparable. Not to mention way, way more solo films in general, of course. Mothra has its own history but I think the fact it became a Toho 'thing' so quickly is what made her become a Godzilla Monster moreso than an individual kaiju

Mothra and Rodan are Toho monsters. I guess Mothra originated in a novel, but Toho was making her movies from the beginning. Both she and Rodan belonged to the same studio making Godzilla movies, so it's not really the same level of crossover. It's like Spider-Man meeting the Fantastic Four or something. They're all giant monsters owned by the same studio, so crossovers are very logical, convenient, and inevitable.

Kong comes from not only a different studio but a different country with a whole different cultural attitude towards its movie monsters. It's a much more dramatic kind of crossover

Godzilla and Kong don't even feel like a crossover because they both cover the same ground.

It's like if Batman movies going forward where Batman and Nightwing films.

If you ask me, the Monsterverse hardly even qualifies as a “shared universe” at this point, so there’s not much of a crossover element to it.

Godzilla vs Kong maybe but with New Empire i pretty much think it's settled as its own world now, its not a crossover anymore
