Kaiju: Unleashed

Post by Coobzilla03 »

This will be the first tournament I’ve ran in over 7 years. Many of the usual tourney-goers now were not around then. *insert Saving Private Ryan aging meme* I’m very pleased to be back with this one!

Earth Defenders
These monsters have a common, instinctive goal to destroy Power Crystals to maintain the balance of life on Earth. While they dislike the chaotic and unnatural energy of the Power Crystals, Earth Defenders acknowledge their importance in saving their world and will not hesitate to utilize their power.
Special Attributes: None.
Earth Defender Leaders:
Spoiler:
Godzilla (1960s)
The King of the Monsters hasn't tasted the thrill of battle since thwarting the Kilaakian Invasion of 1999. He will, however, need to rally one last time to put an end to the spread of Power Crystals across his planet. In his old age, does he still have what it takes to save the world?
Tier: 3 (75 Power Crystals); Height: 50 meters; Mass: 20,000 tons
Upgrades: 1970s [4], ZF [5]
Ability: King of the Monsters - Those who fought alongside Godzilla know him as The King of the Monsters. Godzilla collects Showa kaiju that he battled with for reduced cost. (Rodan [Showa], Mothra Larva/Mothra [Showa], Minilla, Anguirus [Showa], Gorosaurus, Baragon [Showa], King Caesar [Showa]).

Gamera (Heisei)
Atlantis’s superweapon returned home when he believed he finally eradicated the world’s Gyaos population. However, due to being absorbed by Power Crystals, Earth’s Mana has reached the weakest point in the planet’s history. The Gyaos have regained their foothold in a big way. Gamera’s ancient duty is still unfulfilled.
Tier: 3 (75 Power Crystals); Height: 50 meters; Mass: 25,000 tons
Upgrades: G2 (4), G3 (5)
Ability: Earth's Mana - The mana of Earth is at an all-time low. As Gamera absorbs more of it, Gyaos will begin swarming to him. However, after five matches, Gamera will be given the effects of a Mana Surge (minus the size increase given by all Surges).

Godzilla Junior
The Prince of the Monsters may not yet be strong like his father, but Godzilla Junior has the same sense of duty. He knows that the world is out of balance, and the source of this disruptive power feels all too familiar...
Tier: 2 (100 Power Crystals); Height: 40 meters; Mass: 15,000 tons
Upgrades: Godzilla 1980s [4], Godzilla 1990s [5], Burning Godzilla [6], Melting Godzilla [7]
Ability: Telepathy - In his first match, and only once after in the tournament, Godzilla Junior can telepathically call for Rodan (Heisei)'s aid.

Zilla Junior
The H.E.A.T Seeker, with Godzilla and Craven in tow, ventured into the dense fog after the Mutant Jellyfish. They soon came out into the open sea, bright and sunny, with no sign of the mutant they were seeking.
Tier: 4 (50 Power Crystals); Height: 30 meters; Length: 45 meters; Mass: 20,000 tons
Upgrades: None
Ability: H.E.A.T - H.E.A.T. are the foremost experts on mutations. When facing a mutant team, up to two of their abilities are null (priority given to auto-abilities; if the opponent has more than 2 abilities deployed, the nullified abilities are randomly chosen).

Godzilla (2014)
After narrowly defeating the MUTOs, The Alpha Titan slept. Upon waking up, he found himself in a strange environment; San Francisco, but not as it was. However, that mattered little in comparison to the strange and dangerous energies he felt radiating out of this new world.
Tier: 4 (50 Power Crystals); Height: 54 meters; Mass: 30,000 tons
Upgrades: 2019 (5), 2021 (6), Burning (7)
Ability: Alpha Titan - Many Titans of his own world acknowledge Godzilla as their Alpha. Lesser Monsterverse kaiju join Godzilla for reduced Power Crystals. (Mothra [2019] and Kong [2017+]).

There are Faction-specific purchases. Some must be re-purchased while a select few will apply for your whole run. Prices will be set when the Shop opens a few rounds in. Item and Faction-specific sales will occur; also, if an item is purchased an inordinate amount, its price will increase. Shop doesn't open yet; I will make a post for it when the time comes. This is just to help people decide which Faction they want to play as.

Regions, Locations and Gameplay: What You Need to Know

Every round, each player will DM me a Location to travel to, based on which Location contains kaiju you'd like the most. It may or may not appear, depending on its Rarity. Each Region has several Locations in it; each Location has a Sublocation, and in each Sublocation are kaiju. When selecting a Location, you will be sent to one of the Sublocations.
The likelihood of going to a particular Sublocation is based on the amount of kaiju your team is eligible to pick up i.e. if you are an Alien team, and Sublocation 1 has 4 Mutants, Sublocation 2 has 4 Aliens, Sublocation 3 has 0 of either, you are most likely to go to Sublocation 2 though you still have a fair chance to go to Sublocation 1. You’ll have 0 chance of going to Sublocation 3. These odds are all mathematically determined using a formula and includes some random chance.

This is where Regions are. I'll repost this very often, as I update it or maybe even when a new page is created in here.

The gameplay loop is simple. You win and you’ll win Power Crystals and the opportunity to collect semi-randomly generated kaiju with it (in most cases). After a certain grace period ends, lose a match and you’ll lose Power Crystals. This game is about balancing Power Crystals with maintaining a good roster.

A general schedule format we'll follow:
Monday: Debate
Tuesday: Debate
Wednesday: Voting begins
Thurs-Fri: Voting ends; rewards are listed and players tell me which kaiju they'll capture/anything else relevant. I'll update the Region spreadsheet. Players DM me what Location they will travel to next.
Sat-Sun: Based on what Locations players will go to, I will determine kaiju encountered, rewards etc. and post the matches. Debate likely begins.

For sign-ups, players will pick a Leader and then DM me their first Location to travel to. Name the DM "Kaiju Unleashed Location - [Your Name].

Power Surges

As the tournament progresses, Power Crystals become more and more abundant. You’ll be discovering more and more on your travels. In some places with especially high Crystal density, Power Surges will be found. Power Surges and extremely large Power Crystals that emit different types of energy. A fair warning: You are most likely not the first group to encounter these Power Surges. Many strong kaiju are already drawing on them and must be defeated.
Spoiler:
ALL surges increase the receiving kaiju's height and mass by 20%; Battle Effects last for the whole round
Each team can only hold one Power Surge at a time. Any kaiju can receive a Power Surge, whether they're biological or not
Fire Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: If this surge is given to a kaiju with a beam attack, a random opposing kaiju will be struck with a beam possessing the power of Meltdown Godzilla's breath.
Battle Effects: The kaiju will be endowed with the strength of Showa Godzilla (not including Zone Fighter feats)

Electrical Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: None
Battle Effects: The kaiju will be endowed with an electrical touch like charged Showa Kong, and is now resistant to electrical attacks.

Speed Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: Time has slowed to a crawl for the kaiju receiving the Speed Surge. It will use its most powerful attack on a random opposing monster. (The attack is still in play later in the fight if a one-time use).
Battle Effects: None
Crystal Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: None
Battle Effects: The kaiju is endowed with durability on par with Heisei Godzilla

Radiation Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: The regeneration of one random opposing monster is disabled (if applicable), and given to the kaiju selected to receive the Radiation Surge.
Battle Effects: None

Shield Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: None
Battle Effects: The kaiju's skin becomes that of Super Mechagodzilla, diamond coating included. Overheating is not a factor as with Super Mechagodzilla, though the armor can melt.

Darkness Surge: Pre-Battle Effects:
Battle Effects: The kaiju is given Kingsaurus III's anti-energy shield. As with Kingsaurus, the top of the monster is still vulnerable (in a bipedal kaiju, just above the top of their head is where the shield ends)

Mana Surge: Pre-Battle Effects: Destroying this Crystal releases extremely large quantities of Mana, scaring away all Gyaos, friend or foe
Battle Effects: If the kaiju this Surge is applied to dies in battle, they will be resurrected for another 1 minute/until another death
Scaling:
We’ll use a Toho Showa scale with some tweaks. Here’s some generals rules to follow for each franchise:
Spoiler:
[*]Toho Showa is the baseline. None of those heights and weights are changed, except…
[*]Zone Fighter and company have been scaled down to be slightly more realistic in the height department i.e. Zone himself has been scaled down to 50 meters tall. Their masses remain very high relatively, and these new masses are what to consider when we talk about relevant feats of strength.
[*]Toho Heisei era kaiju’s heights and weights are halved, as is standard, though Godzilla Junior isn’t halved so everyone can’t punt him. He’ll be at 30 meters, 12,000 tons. When upgrading he will go to 40 meters, 25,000 tons for the 80s version and end at 50 meters, 30,000 tons for evolutions beyond. Final Wars kaiju use this scaling.
[*]Non-GFW Toho Millennium era monsters are knocked down by 5 meters and 5,000 tons to scale *most* of the Godzillas to 50 meters, 20,000 tons.
[*]Monsterverse Era kaiju have halved heights and masses divided by 3. It just seems unreasonable for Monsterverse Kong to weigh 45,000 tons. He ain’t that thicc. This still preserves Monsterverse Godzilla’s mass advantage on other Gojis, which I see as fair considering he is a unit worthy of it.
[*]Ultraman kaiju are bumped up 10 meters of height when relevant (the Ultras themselves, kaiju that scale directly with them) but are untouched if a height looks visually inaccurate i.e. Alien Zetton is listed at 60 meters already, and that seems to be roughly correct in comparison to the newly scaled Ultraman.
[*]Showa Gamera kaiju are scaled from Gamera being 50 meters tall. Their masses are bumped up to be relative in accordance with Gamera having a new mass of 20,000 tons.
[*]Heisei Gamera are scaled similarly to Showa, though the masses are a little squirrelier. If you go by a flat ratio, you get Legion weighing 100,000 tons which maaay be a bit much. I’d like thoughts on this.
[*]The various American Kongs, depending on posture, will max out at 45 meters and 20,000 tons to match the height but not mass of Toho Kong. Jackson’s Kong would be 45 meters if he were to stand totally erect and has the same mass as the others.
[*]Kiko is scaled to 35 meters and the prehistoric beasts he fought follow suit.
[*]Zilla Junior is scaled as compared to Zilla and Godzilla in Final Wars, if Godzilla was 50 meters. His mass is 20,000 tons.
[*]Rexy’s ratio to a Vastatosaurus Rex’s height is ~5.2:6.1 meters tall (per this Reddit size chart), and she scales thusly. That probably makes her about 35 meters tall at the shoulder, give or take? And the rest of Jurassic Park scales based on her.
I know this is excessive, but the general structure is here if anyone feels the need to split hairs this deeply in-tournament. If anyone has any specific questions about a monster’s height and mass, let me know.
Signups will last until Saturday morning, 12 PM CST. Again, pick a Leader and DM me a Location to travel to (using the format "Kaiju Unleashed Location - [Your Name]"). And if there's any major quibbles with the Tiers I have listed, or if there's any questions, let me know down below.

Teams thus far:
Nagoda - Gipsy Danger
Reptile - Monster X
Voyager - Godzilla (1960s)
Titanodon - Godzilla (2014)
JAGzilla - King Ghidorah (Showa)
Logan - Gamera (Heisei)
Itachi - Godzilla Junior

I will take Gipsy Danger as my leader if possible. Cause why not? Seems like a fun choice.

Taking Monster X. I'm not sure if its counted here or in DMs, so I'll be sure by posting it here too.
I frequent the KWC and tournament sections because that's all I care about on TK.

Then to clarify, I got my boy Godzilla '60s. We're gonna bring him back to his Zone Fighter prime, round up the Monsterland homeboys and save the world.

Innovative, mechanically interesting, relatively balanced roster as far as I can tell. Pumped to be following this tournament. I'm not signing up though as this tournament is just too engaging and mechanically complex (in a good way), I don't have the ability to devote the time and effort I would like to play this.

I guess I'm missing something, but how do we tell which kaiju are in which locations?

Coob's got a little link that takes you to a spreadsheet that tells you where all the kaiju are. It's embedded in the Locations part of his post, you'll see it.

Bahhh it's not too time consuming, sign up! Thank you so much for the kind words though!

Just to clarify for everyone: the tabs on the spreadsheet (Japan, Americas, Pacific Isles etc.) are Regions. Click on Japan, for example, and the Locations are Wilds of Japan, Major Cities of Japan and Tokyo. The latter three are where you choose to go. Suppose you go to Major Cities of Japan, and you'll have a chance to either go to Osaka or Yokohama (the Sublocations) based on what your Faction is and how it aligns with the wild kaiju in each. In this example, if you're a Mutant team you've got way higher odds of going to Osaka and encountering some of its wild kaiju.

You underestimate the power of deadlines and research papers the dark side!.

More seriously though, a creative tournament requires a creative playstyle and strategy, and there's enough mechanics to make this a full on strategic endeavour. It just doesn't feel right to join a tournament and not try to do your very best to play with the strategies, kaiju, and mechanics provided to the best you possibly can.

Fair enough. I appreciate your respect for the tournament.

Another announcement: In all of my copy-pasting, I forgot the fifth leader of the Mutants: Skar King. He's Tier 3 and his ability allows him to collect King Kongs and Shinomura to his team (normally impossible as a Mutant). If anyone wants to change to him (or any other leader, for that matter), say so in here and DM me any changes to your Location.

edit: added in the Alien shop items. Missed that in my copy-pasting

Why is Shinomura an Earth Defender? Its character is it's very hostile and aggressive, attacking anything within its vicinity. Also, Godzilla (2000) is in 2 factions. I don't know if that's intentional or not

She was under control by Skar King but was friendly towards Kong afterwards. I believe she'd behave as an Earth Defender when of her own free will. The way Monsterverse treats their kaiju made it a little harder to pigeonhole them into a Faction as opposed to most of the rest of the series outside of the Godzillas. edit: I see the confusion here, Shinomura and Shimo are separate entities. Whoopsie! This is the ice dragon from GxK.

As far as Godzilla 2000, oops. The Godzilla that fought Orga is supposed to be an Earth Defender only (like the game Godzilla: Unleashed), the one that battled Megaguirus is a Mutant to try and balance that out. I accidentally left Godzilla 2000 in the Mutant listing. I'll fix it
