This film is basically an unofficial Japanese remake of / counterpart to Gorgo, which was released six years earlier in 1961. The only major difference between the two is that Gorgo had one adult monster (a mother) and Gappa the Triphibian Monster had two adult monsters (a father and a mother).

That's true, and with a little bit of Mothra tossed in. They release the kid to prevent the adults from doing further damage.
The problem with doing nothing is that you never know when you're finished.
