I really think this is a great way to put it. I really think the 'scratch the itch' concept is a useful one for film discussion and one I wish were explored a little more. There are some great films that don't scratch any itch I have and some bad films that can scratch a certain one. I bring up often that I mostly watch Monster Zero for the human storyline and alien invasion but it doesn't quite hit as hard for me on monster action, for example, or how I love Godzilla: Final Wars as something to put on when I don't want to pay attention to the entire film, something that doesn't feel right when I use Honda's movies, which draw me in a little too well for casual viewing sometimes... or how giant robot stuff works better for me taken as a 'sci-fi' story than a kaiju story, since part of the intrinsic appeals to kaiju for me don't apply to giant robots, but I can still enjoy them through a different lens. I think all of this links in a way to the tendency for people to say whether a deviating film in a franchise "feels like" the franchise -- if you cut away certain things, it might not scratch that certain itch for some people, while still doing so for others.LSD Jellyfish wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 3:29 amAs maybe one of the few people who “mildly” enjoys the anime trilogy, I can say I don’t think you’ll enjoy it for the monster scenes. There’s a lot more monster action with Godzilla in the second movie than people give it credit for, and the visuals with Ghidorah are neat in the third movie, but that still doesn’t change how rare these moments are. Godzilla Earth’s appearance at the end of the first film is still cool though.
But again, I watched the entire trilogy trying to appreciate its unique-ish setting, philosophical ideas, and the mesh of hard militaristic sci-fi, and enjoyed it way more, rather than as a Godzilla film. I maintain that these flicks aren’t unwatchable or as bad as people make them out to be, but they’re definitely still bottom tier Godzilla films that don’t scratch a certain “itch” like conventional genre films do.
This is the "film is subjective" teenager in me showing a little. Guess I'm in a good mood? Or is it a bad mood?
