Sounds like a neat book.
I hope someone picks up the rights to this movie again so I can actually track it down & see it.

Re: Gunhed (1989)
I rewatched Gunhed and here is what I loved. The special effects, the sets(especially for it being Japanese and what's big budget over there but still low budget here),music, the overall feel of Japanese live action films of that period and there ambition to at least try to be a live action anime by way of Hollywood blockbuster. But here is the problems it ignores the cool blonde female Texas ranger chick for a good chunk of the film and when she returns your like huh,not much goes on in the middle and or is repetitious(I don't like cutting of Asian films but this movie could have used the newline/miramax Jackie chan treatment),confusing plot even if it is barely there, strange humor what the hell is 7 doing with his voice and why is it funny, bad dubbing(but not a total negative these dubs have there charm). Another pro I loved the Gunhed itself. This could use a reboot.

a Gunhed reboot? Hell to the no. I don't think the movie is that bad to deserve a reboot.

Ok a re edit to tighten the pacing. Your right about the reboot I take that back. The movie is already derivative of other franchises(I still like it and all). But how and where to cut. it's middle act is really slow.

Re: Gunhed (1989)
I finally bought this film and manged to check it out. It was decent, although the video quality of ADV's dvd leaves alot to be desired. The plot wasn't terrible, although the way some scenes were shot/ edited does make it confusing upon the initial viewing. The effects were great, and the kid characters weren't too bad (some of the godzilla films have kids that are far more annoying). I liked the idea of the aerobot, and gunhed was a pretty badass mech. Overall probably my favourite heisei non godzilla flick.

As a big fan of mecha and 80s sci-fi, it's surprising that I haven't gotten around to seeing this film yet. I will say that I love the look of the mecha and the visuals.

I liked this movie. It was far from perfect but I was entertained. The sets and effects are pretty top-notch too so that helps.

Fun fact! Today's the day that the robot war starts, according to the opening narration.

Re: Gunhed (1989)
Poor Kawakita must've poured his heart and soul into the effects for this movie, only to fail so hard and not just financially like GvB the same year. Regardless, judging by Brandon Tenold's review, this movie is a disjointed, derivative mess done by people without vision and just wanted to capitalize on the 80's future cyborg craze as seen in Terminator and Robocop.

So you haven't seen the movie yourself and decided to give your two cents based on some guys YouTube review?
Why am I not surprised.

As someone who watched the movie for the first time recently, I think it rules. Sure it's messy, the beginning isn't great, and the ending is shockingly abrupt, but when the movie gets going it's so much fun. I give it a Party Time Now/10.

Effects and soundtrack for it are awesome. Story and execution is where it falls short.
