^ Criterion also has the rights to Katsu Pro's trashy Hanzo the Razor series of films (starring Shintaro Katsu himself), but only have them streaming on the Channel and HBO Max. I sort of doubt they'll be getting physical releases from them anytime soon, sadly.

Regardless of how Criterion's subs differ from the dub script, which aren't major instances, this is essentially not a new translation despite being advertised as such. There are still errors that were present in subtitles for the Echo Bridge blu-ray, with subtitle conventions not normally adhered to in other Criterion releases.

Also to add, the Return of Godzilla stream up on the channel also uses the same subtitles used by Kraken for their blu-ray, meanwhile Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs. Mothra have been given new translations.

Sure, she mixes up the titles of Astro-Monster and GTTHM, but that was in an anecdote that Miki was essentially and updated version of the concept of Princess Salno... which I hadn't actually thought of before, but I suppose is a natural connection.
In her defense, the titles for those two movies are practically interchangeable.

I got my copy from the Criterion flash sale in today, but haven't opened it yet. I've heard people say that the subtitle track is mostly "dubtitles", can anyone here (that I trust more) confirm that?
How are the titles practically interchangeable?

Hoe are the titles practically interchangeable?
They’re both generic enough references to King Ghidorah.

No they're not she literally compared the abilities of Miki to Princess Salno in Ghidorah. She wasn't just getting a title wrong. She was attributing the plot and character from Ghidorah to Astro Monster.

Just because they both have Ghidorah in them doesn't mean the titles are interchangeable. That would be like if you applied that same logic to Godzilla vs Gigan or Destroy All Monsters.

Is it known with total certainty that the audio on the Criterion disc is a remix and not the original Dolby Stereo mix in a 5.1/5.0 container?

The liner notes strongly suggest it's the original audio and if it were a DVD-era 5.1 remix, surely it wouldn't have an empty LFE channel?

If it was the original stereo mix there wouldn’t be full directionality in the surround speakers.

So the 5.1 mix has always really been a 5.0? Weird, but if it's got split surrounds I guess that settles it. Criterion's description of the audio is extremely misleading in that case.

Ah, the sale starts a few days early! I'm gonna jump on the Godzilla '54 4K and a couple other Criterions I've had my eye on.

The 50% sale was the incentive I needed to finally pick up the Biollante 4K.

I'm less than 8 minutes into the commentary. I'm already tuning out. They ditched Ed's commentary for this?

EDIT: 20:31. That's when i turned it off. Easily one of the worst commentaries fot a Godzilla release I've ever heard.

Got the '54 4K at the sale. Interestingly, it duplicates the original Blu-ray packaging almost exactly, but it's significantly thicker to accommodate 2 discs!

Not only that, it duplicates the original blu-ray! The UHD is the only one with the new 4K transfer. The blu-ray has the same old transfer as before. A bit misleading to the folks who only have HD equipment at this time thinking they might see the new transfer at least in HD.

I got the Criterion Blu Ray that came out in 2012 (wow I didn't think it was that long ago!) as well as the Showa collection that came out in 2019. The Blu ray was highly praised at the time. I dont have a UHD TV, or a 4K player, is the Criterion 4K of the original Godzilla Really a significant improvement from the Blu ray?

Absolutely. Most of the flickering and remaining scratches have been removed or greatly minimized.

It's a more subtle difference than the jump between DVD and Blu-ray. If you had the two versions playing next to each other you'd be able to spot the difference pretty easily. I've had my player for a few months now, and the biggest things that jump out are the very fine details; film grain, fibers on clothes, etc. It's easier to look at the Toho logo and realize you're looking at panes of glass.

The thing is, the 2012 transfer for this movie was already excellent, so unlike the new transfers of Godzilla movies which are replacing those quite poor '00s transfers this isn't some hugely needed improvement. I got it mostly because I'm a collector and I don't mind rebuying these particular movies in the new format!

I saw that the Criterion Godzilla Blu-ray (no 4K disc) has a new 2024 ASIN as well as the old 2012 ASIN. I wonder if this 2024 "release" has the 4K remaster on it or is just a reissue of the 2012 disc.
