Fantastic video about this movie by Blunova. Seriously, people need to check out his channel, his insight on Godzilla films are really, really skreeonking good.
I still think that Kiryu was a missed opportunity. The original Godzilla getting the Robocop treatment and being controlled was interesting, but I do wish that he was more durable and eventually gained a bit more control over himself. I actually like this movie better then the sequel that came afterword.

The Mechagodzilla Rampage scene always goes on way longer then I remember. In my mind I always think of it only as the moment where MG is walking at dusk through a building before powering down, but there’s actually a “fight” between it and the Gryphons. I think though if MG reverted more, then there would be no way that Kiryu would’ve been cleared for launching.

I actually wish it went longer, personally. It always feel so short to me. Like they had this awesome concept for it and went "ehhhh production costs. Just cut to him running out of batteries." I do love that shot of him with the sun setting and him shutting down, though.

I actually prefer Tokyo S.O.S. over this one. More entertainment value of me, and I think Mothra spices up the story more.

I think Tokyo SOS is towards the bottom of my ranking of the franchise, while this would be middle.

If we could take the kaiju action from Tokyo S.O.S & combine it with the
characters & narrative of Against MechaGodzilla...well...I think that would
have been a great film.

Or they just could have kept Akane as the main character in Tokyo S.O.S...
that would have worked right?

Definitely one of my main gripes with SOS.

This would be pretty near the top (like, top ten) for me- but yeah, S.O.S. would be in the bottom five. Maybe bottom three.

Its like my MAIN gripe.

If Tokyo S.O.S kept the same core characters & added in
the Mothra connection...it would have been SO much better.

I think the film could have sustained itself without Akane, if they just did other things better. That's why it isn't my main gripe.

And if Mothra actually went through with her threat. Imagine Godzilla and Mothra trashing Tokyo together. That would've been great.

Maybe? I mean I never believed the threat Mothra made.

*Thinks*

Although a 3 way fight between Godzilla, Kiryu & Mothra with
every kaiju attacking each other would have been cool to see...

Although Mothra would have dispatched the Gryphons meaning
Kiryu would have been pilot-less...

*Thinks*

Although Kiryu could have just gone berserk anyway...

*Thinks*

I'm thinking about this way too much.

You mean, like, if this movie actually had a focused story it was telling, instead of just throwing a bunch of random nonsense at the wall and then never developing any of it?
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

I can’t imagine this film feeling complete as a stand alone without Tokyo SOS coming soon after.

If only Tokyo SOS kept the same lead chick though.

I very much consider TFA to be half-assed. What a generic film which only fed on nostalgia, it brought nothing new to the table.
That's not true. C3PO had a red arm.

I just rewatched this film last night for the first time in a while. I just wanna say that Sara is one of my favorite child characters in the franchise. She doesn't do a whole lot, but her conversations with Akane are some of my favorite moments in the film. The whole "no life is worthless" part is genuinely touching and seeing their relationship come back to give Akane strength when inside Kiryu was really great.

Was there ever an official reason given why we got new characters rather than the cast of this movie?

So that shot of Godzilla dying to the Oxygen Destroyer in the flashback? Not CGI but a suit.

As I recall, this was pretty well understood when the film was new-ish, but somewhere along the line some fan or fans assumed it was CGI and that’s what spread like wildfire.

Kiryu is made of which material?
When those fleeting lives destined to die, forget their humbleness and sing praises of their glory, such will shake the very heavens and split the earth, and they shall know the wrath of the divine. The inevitable incarnation of destruction. So, you show yourself at last. Since we last saw each other, it has been 20 years for us and 20,000 years for you. It's been a while... Oh, King of Destruction.
