D-War (2007)

One of my favorite giant monster movies ever. One of the films that introduced me to the genre. Nostalgia is probably what carries my appreciation for this flick, despite it's low ratings.
I remember the sense of awe it inspired in me as a kid. The movie is brimming with many iconic scenes featuring Buraki. From him k*lling an elephant, slithering atop buildings and slithering through suburban neighborhoods and the city, causing mayhem all along the way. A giant cobra is just naturally captivating probably.
This movie introduced me to many of the tropes of the kaiju genre such as "indestructible" creatures, supernatural creatures and battles between the military and monsters. Before that other creature features I had seen included Jurassic Park, King Kong and Lake Placid. Movies that featured mortal creatures. Nothing immune to bullets or missiles. D Wars showed little me that monsters could be on "another level".
The fact the creatures in D War were magic and linked to a prophecy probably also added to their mystique for me. This movie may have been my introduction to fantasy movies overall as well. At that point in my life I was probably most familiar with Christianity and biblical lore. This movie, though I was fully aware was fictional, did make me consider "wow what if some foreign religion like Chinese mythology did one day end up being revealed as true so dramatically. That would change every we think we know!"
So yeah, D Wars has a nice spot in my memories. To this day I still have fun watching it.

D-War is remarkably dumb and equally remarkably awesome. Where else can you see the armies of Mordor invading modern day LA?

How it took until 2025 to have a thread on this gem is mental to me.

It's an entertaining popcorn flick. While the characters and most of the story is cliched, the monster designs are good, and we get some nice dragon vs military action. If this movie had a sequel, it'd probably get more attention here.

If I had to make a serious critique of the film, it would be that the ending sucks. The characters just wake up.in Mordor with no explanation of where they are or how they got there, and the hero ends up all alone in the middle of no where when credits roll. The story doesn't conclude it just stops.

I like to think the dude is just trapped in this realm until he dies now.

I showed this to a friend last year, and what he couldn't get over is how many people are actually in this: Robert Forster, Craig Robinson, Aimee Garcia (Lucifer, Dexter), Retta (Parks and Recreation), and a few others we recognized. He joked that they must've hired every available comedian in Hollywood at the time, but then stuck them in a Fantasy/Action movie lol

I remember getting the DVD for this from Wal Mart back in like 07 or 08 and watching it several times. It isn't a great movie by any stretch, but it also isn't bad at all, solid B movie for its type. The CGI is better than most other non-Hollywood movies of the era (especially considering this seems like the era that birthed the awful CGI of Asylum and SYFY original "movies"), the story while a bit ambitious in parts isn't incoherent for Western audiences, the acting is, eh, serviceable, and the creature designs are legit great. It's a genuinely decent movie from a time when the giant monster movie genre was in a pretty near-totally-dead place. I was disappointed when the sequel seemed to be shelved in development hell.
