I don’t really collect sofubi so I thought that was cheap for sofubi lol. I really have no idea though.

For comparison, the Mondo Biollante soft vinyls are 8.5" tall, 8" wide, and 11" long for $125.shadowgigan wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 9:56 am I don’t really collect sofubi so I thought that was cheap for sofubi lol. I really have no idea though.
$250 is a lot to swallow. Maybe for the purple glitter one but definitely nothing other than that.

Maybe I just need to get with the times but I’m used to paying about $100-$150 for most marmits or gigabrains. Sometimes you can find them for less (I think a lot of the Japanese retail prices are well under ¥10,000). $250 is almost what I paid for Gigabrain King Ghidorah and he’s MASSIVE.

Wow, I thought that figure would be way more expensive!canofhumdingers wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 10:09 am $250 is almost what I paid for Gigabrain King Ghidorah and he’s MASSIVE.
Yeah, like I said, I don’t really collect sofubi, it’s just not really my thing. So I don’t know much about the market. I prefer things like X Plus and resin kits. I’m not affiliated with spiral or anything btw, just trying to help out a friend who is by spreading the word.

Re: Spiral Toy Sofubi
They look great, but $130-$150 would’ve been more in line with the market I believe.
FWIW Gigabrain Ghidorah was about $300 plus shipping, but that was after a middleman mark up and it was also almost 10 years ago. But looking at sold listings on eBay that’s still a pretty accurate market price ($350-$400 shipped). Prices vary pretty greatly depending on age and rarity, but for new release 10 inch sofubi the typical price seems to be $80-$150.

Well, wouldn’t you know I still had the emails in my folder all these years later. The JPY retail price of Gigabrain Ghidorah was ¥22,500 in 2012. I paid $275 plus shipping.

Forgive my ignorance, but what kind of Japanese toy is a sofubi?

Re: Spiral Toy Sofubi
The word sofubi means soft vinyl. It’s a general term that applies to any hollow vinyl figures. Bandai figures are technically sofubi.
In the US the term is often more commonly associated with higher end, limited production vinyl art figures like those made by Marmit, Marusan, Gigabrain and the like. These are also referred to as designer vinyl, which I think is a more accurate term.

$250? For what is virtually a Marmit Godzilla?
Straight up, fuck Spiral. This company is quickly representing everything wrong with what this hobby is becoming.

I thought marmits were super expensive lol, shows what I know. Is it just the Desugojis that go for so much?

I'm sure that part of what's going on has to do with licensing, with Playmates getting the master Monsterverse license and kicking NECA and others off of the boat. Spiral's license probably only covers the unpopular categories.Mac Daddy MM wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 2:45 pm $250? For what is virtually a Marmit Godzilla?

It just stings cause they're the only ones doing anything interesting with the Monsterverse by doing the OG Titans from the movies and the comics.

Re: Spiral Toy Sofubi
Once they go out of production, yeah. They can quickly climb. But brand new releases are generally like $100-$150, assuming its not like some super elusive convention exclusive or lottery release. These assholes are demanding more than a 30 CM X-Plus for one. As I said, fuck Spiral. This company is utterly atrocious.shadowgigan wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 2:57 pm I thought marmits were super expensive lol, shows what I know. Is it just the Desugojis that go for so much?
And I will openly tell any collector that supports them that they are part of the growing problem with this hobby.
That does not explain charging $250 for a Marmit equivalant and the demanding over $1000 for what are virtually just offbrand X-Plus. Even the Favorite Sculpters line by name brand sculpters (like Sakai) don't fetch as much as these do, and they get to eliminate the need for a professional sculptor for most releases do to having the actual CG renders used in the movie.Fermix wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 3:10 pm

To say I'm pissed at this company now because of the $250 price is an understatement. So let me say it again.
Fuck Spiral Studios.

Oh yeah, I'm saying it's part of the problem, but ultimately charging double what companies like Mondo are is pretty sus.

Yeah, at least Mondo is keeping their Marmit-style stuff in line. I'm not a big fan of how their statues are like $300, or that I had to shell out $150 for a non-articulated, 8-inch HB Godzilla figure, but they're not nearly as bad as this shit show of a company.

Why? I "support" them because I support good people. I assure you the people who have worked on this are not trying to rip anyone off or do anything wrong. They said if anything, they are trying to do things to lower the price. Once the shipping issues are fixed, I think they will be in a good position.
Lol are you talking about the Ultimate Masterline releases? Are you seriously going to call the KG an offbrand X-Plus? X-Plus has failed to produce even a single 30cm King Ghidorah from any era. That does not explain charging $250 for a Marmit equivalant and the demanding over $1000 for what are virtually just offbrand X-Plus

The new Spiral GMK is sculpted by Tanaka, so that pretty much defeats that argument, and is even more in line with how much a gigantic from X-Plus would cost. The key difference seems to be that resin costs more than vinyl. If the new GMK was resin, it would likely also cost over $1000, unless you just want an unbuilt kit or something.

Re: Spiral Toy Sofubi
I don't care for your arguments because I've worked in manufacturing for over 15 years now, including resin and rotary oven molding on larger items than toys, and have been involved in meetings behind this and that. There is no reason you can possibly give to why they are blatantly taking advantage of fans and demanding this. I've kept quiet on the company because I always just chalked them up to a premium/top tier company akin to Sideshow Collectables. This recent release was something else. A blatant f'n Marmit. And it doesn't help we got someone like you coming in here "Ooooh! You'll be pleased with the cost! Can't say more!!!"shadowgigan wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 4:14 pm You didn’t address any of my arguments. It’s strange you are this upset over what is essentially a toy.
And then it drops at $250. Screw that and fuck this company. Period.
Yes, I am upset over it. I'm upset over it because it is something I was generally very excited for and looking forward to. That blue LPG is amazing looking and I've wanted a stylized LPG on my Marmit shelf since 2014-ish.
Why TF are you in here promoting this shit if all they are... are "toys?"
