Post by Tyrant_Lizard_King »

The rare and so-called "lost" 60s South Korean kaiju flick is finally coming to home video from SRS Cinema.

I'd never even heard of this movie. What a curveball! Now Yonggary: Monster From the Deep won't have to be alone as the only Korean kaiju film on my shelf.

The only reason I even know this film existed was because of the old book Godzilla: King of the Movie Monsters.

I've seen a clip of this movie, and it could be worth a watch.

This is insane. I've been wanting to see Wangmagwi for years!

SRS's catalog has more obscure stuff than the major kaiju bootleg operations of the vhs/DVD heyday.

This is a movie that could use a modern remake.

It would be great if a modern Wangmagwi or even Bulgasari was made in Korea today. Especially with how crazy the world seems to be for Korean cinema since Parasite and Squid Games.

I'd love a sequel or homage to The Host too. Been nearly 20 years, and it's really held up.
I unapologetically, wholeheartedly, and without a doubt hate Godzilla vs Kong.

Why not a modern Yongary remake on top of that?

As long as it's better than Reptilian.

I still want to try the chicken nuggets inspired by the film.

So, what's the deal with this film having been 'lost'? Did it just resurface when this release was announced, or...?

My guess is a lost copy was found in someone's basement/attic.

It wasn’t really “lost”, just not available anywhere outside of South Korea. It didn’t see a home media release anywhere and was only available through prints at the Korean Film Archive and digital copies viewable on-site only. It aired on TV a couple of times but nobody was able to record it.

Ah. I guess that probably doesn't bode well for its quality, but we'll see. It's pretty cool that there's finally a home release coming, anyway. It's got to be one of the single most obscure kaiju films out there.

I heard either the studio or the director basically had it suppressed. If true something must have happened to allow its release.
