Your ranking of the Showa Godzilla films

Post by Voyager »

Here we can discuss and make our personal list of the Showa Godzilla films from worst to best (or least favorite to favorite).

Here we go.

Worst to best

Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla's Revenge
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep
Godzilla vs Megalon
Godzilla vs Gigan
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
King Kong vs Godzilla
Son of Godzilla
Invasion of Astro Monster
Godzilla vs Hedorah
Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Mothra vs Godzilla
Godzilla

Least Favorite to Favorite

Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla's Revenge
Ebirah Horror of the Deep
Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla vs Hedorah
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs Megalon
Invasion of Astro Monster
Godzilla
King Kong vs Godzilla
Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Mothra vs Godzilla

MvG is one that I most often watch, along with ToMG and GTTHM.

I really do not like watching the 3 at the bottom, I find GRA unwatchable for some reason, Revenge is a poop-show and Sea Monster I just never really liked.

I only watch Godzilla if I'm in the right mood.

I often watch KKvG, IoAM, SoG, Megalon, and Hedorah if I'm feeling happy, to a lesser extent the same goes with DAM, GvMG and GvG.

Worst to Best
15) Godzilla vs. Megalon
14) Godzilla's Revenge
13) Godzilla Raids Again
12) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
11) Godzilla vs. Gigan
10) Destroy All Monsters
9) Godzilla vs. Ebirah
8) Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster
7) Monster Zero
6) King Kong vs. Godzilla
5) Son of Godzilla
4) Godzilla vs. Hedorah
3) Terror of Mechagodzilla
2) Mothra vs. Godzilla
1) Godzilla

Top two are pretty definitive. #3-7 are really hard for me to rank, they're all about equally good in different ways. Even though I tried to leave favoritism out of this, that definitely factored into how I ended up ranking them. #8-10 are all pretty close; I think Ebirah has the best cast and DAM has the best action sequences, but Ghidorah is the best overall by a slim margin. Gigan is a definitive #11. #12 and 13 are pretty equal for me; I enjoy Mechagodzilla a lot more, but I'm not entirely sure I think it's a better movie than GRA. #14 and 15 are pretty much tied for me. I give Revenge slightly more credit for trying something new, even though I don't really like what it tried. Until a certain '94 film came out, I think these were easily the two worst films in the franchise. On the other hand, I think Gojira '54 and Mothra vs. G are still the top two films of the franchise, though if I were to rank all the films, GMK might just slightly edge out Mothra.

Least Favorite to Favorite
15) Godzilla's Revenge
14) Godzilla Raids Again
13) Godzilla vs. Megalon
12) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

9) Monster Zero
8) Godzilla
7) King Kong vs. Godzilla
6) Son of Godzilla
5) Godzilla vs. Gigan
4) Destroy All Monsters
3) Mothra vs. Godzilla
2) Terror of Mechagodzilla
1) Godzilla vs. Hedorah

Hedorah is obviously my favorite. #2-5 are all pretty close; there was a time when Gigan would definitely have come in second and DAM in third, but I'm always going back and forth on which movies I favor. If I made this list again in a year, there would probably be only one or two changes to the worst-best list but this one would look completely different. #6-9 are pretty close too. I'm surprised I only ranked the original film in the middle of the pack but, truthfully, I don't enjoy it as much as many of the more colorful entries from the 60s and 70s. It's worth noting KKvG has shot up for me since I watched the original cut; had I made this list based off the US version, it would rank 14th. Meanwhile, I've soured a bit on MZ as of my most recent viewing; a year ago it would easily have made 6th place. #10-12 are pretty close for me and I still really like all of these movies, even though they fall in the bottom third of the Showa pack. On a ranked list of all Godzilla movies, they'd still be in the upper half for sure. The last three are pretty definitive. I only enjoy Megalon when inebriated. I don't enjoy GRA or Revenge at all; on my recent rewatch of the whole Showa series, they're the only two films I skipped. GRA ranks slightly higher because at least it doesn't irritate the shit out of me, it just bores me.

1 Gojira (54): It is just a film on a different level, hard to put into a quick sentence.
2 Invasion of the Astro Monster: Perfect mix of sci-fi space and Kaiju with a great cast.
3 Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster: Love the human story intertwined with the Kaiju action
4 Mothra Vs Godzilla: Nice story over all great human storyline and one of the better human traps for Godzilla
5. King Kong Vs Godzilla: Japanese version only it is a great little satire, English version would be just above All Monster Attack
6 Ebirah Terror of the Deep: This is almost all human cast enjoyment, the parts with Godzilla are okay, but it is the castaways struggle that steals the show.
7. Son of Godzilla: Great mix of the scientist working around the fact that they are now ground zero for Kaiju
8 Godzilla Vs Hedorah: I dig the art house psychedelic style of the film.
9 Destroy All Monsters: I still like this movie for its ambitious plot, but it is too rushed and by the numbers.
10 Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla: Another by the numbers mix of aliens, spies, and Kaiju fights
11 Terror of Mechagodzilla: The weird dreamlike tone of the film never sits well with me.
12 Godzilla Raids Again: Japanese version just falls a little short, good ideas just not executed well. English version is worse and would be down 2 slots
13 Godzilla Vs Megalon: Silly but fun fight at the end
14 All Monster Attack: Nice idea, but just falls flat.
15 Godzilla Vs Gigan: The human cast is the best part, the rest is silly and the mix of footage just takes away enjoyment,

Let's see, from least favorite to most favorite:

Invasion of Astro Monster
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Son of Godzilla
Ghidorah
Destroy All Monsters
All Monsters Attack
Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Megalon
Godzilla vs Hedorah
Rodan
Mothra vs Godzilla
King Kong vs Godzilla
Mothra
Godzilla vs Ebirah
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla King of Monsters

I included Rodan and Mothra also. I have not seen King Kong vs Godzilla and Son of Godzilla in years, so those rankings are probably off. I also need to rewatch Ghidorah, I feel like that should be higher.

I marathoned the entire Godzilla series and related Toho kaiju/SFX films and the list below is what I had come up with for the Showa era. It is a combination of both critical and personal opinion.

1-5: My favorites
6-8: Very Good
9-12: Decent
13-15: No good

Exclusively Godzilla Films:

1) Gojira: Undeniably the best Godzilla film from the critical perspective. I enjoy the movie for its dark tones and is full of great, iconic scenes. Shodai Goji is among my favorite designs of the character as well.

2) Destroy all Monsters: My personal favorite Showa movie. I know that film has its problems, but I can look past that for the spectacle of seeing so many kaiju I've come to love on screen at one time. Along with Invasion of Astro Monster, this one has my favorite alien plots too. I actually do not mind the rocket prop and I always found it to be cool as a kid.

3) King Kong vs. Godzilla: My favorite fight in the series along with a fun plot with funny characters. The Kong suit may look ugly, but I feel that the film does a good job of capturing the personality of Kong from his American movies. There are some points of the movie where I think it can get a little borrowing, but it does not last for too long. Great film overall.

4) Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster: This movie used to be my #1 movie but has since been dethroned by the previous two. Ghidorah is my current favorite Godzilla kaiju besides Godzilla and I always liked this movie for introducing him. It also has my second favorite fight of the series between Godzilla and Rodan, even when they play volleyball with rocks. The film can be a little bit of a let down with Ghidorah screen time and I wish I could have seen Ghidorah bring more destruction. Would have loved to have seen the final fight take place in a city.

5) Terror of Mechagodzilla: I watched this movie in Japanese for the first time last year and I could not believe how much more I liked this film in its original language compared to the dub. After watching it in Japanese, I could say that I finally "got" the movie and I loved it. It is a more serious Godzilla film and the characters go through moral dilemmas. Katsura and Dr. Mafube are among my favorite characters in the series and I like the tragic end they meet by the end. There is also some impressive cinematography work done here for the kaiju, especially when Godzilla first battles Titanosaurus. I never liked it as a kid, but as an adult, I love it.

6) Invasion of Astro Monster: Another Ghidorah movie which is why it ranks high on the list for me. Like Destroy All Monsters, I love the alien plot of this film and it is cool seeing the monsters duke it out in Planet X. Kumi Mizuno is eye candy here and she is my top babe of the Godzilla series. Like Katsura in TOMG, her character meets a tragic end which makes it more impactful for me. Not a lot of monster time, but the plot keeps me interested throughout.

7) Mothra vs. Godzilla: Like TOMG, this was a movie that I was not interested in as a kid. I could not believe that Godzilla could lose to Mothra, so I had beef with this film for a long time. Now that I am older and my views on Mothra are more favorable, I realized that this movie is actually pretty good. I like how menacing Godzilla is, but at the same time, I get annoyed by how clumsy he is. There is weight to the plot when the human cast has to go to Infant Island and request Mothra's help, which I really appreciate given that it became a trope in later films. It shows that at this point of the series, Godzilla was still viewed as a major threat and that Mothra was looked at as having the power to stop him. For that and the fights that ensue, it ranks this film high for me.

8) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla: The final battle in this movie is one of my favorites in the series. Mechagodzilla is an absolute menace in his debut film and it is my favorite interpretation of the character. There are some things in this film that I like or dislike; for instance, I actually don't mind the King Caesar song and I find it to be pretty enjoyable. On the other hand, I really don't care for the Black Hole aliens and how they look like rejects from Planet of the Apes. I think had some plot elements like the aliens were executed better (which I think they were in TOMG), this would rank higher on the list.

9) Godzilla vs. Hedorah: I give this film props for creating a unique villain for Godzilla to fight in Hedorah. Along with Mechagodzilla, Hedorah really pushes Godzilla to the limit and if it was not for human intervention, Godzilla might have lost that battle. The human element is what makes it rank low for me, especially the puzzling decision of the main characters to hold a bonfire party where Hedorah was coming through. Just a very, very poor choice.

10) Godzilla Raids Again: This might be a controversial pick, but I have always had a soft spot for this film. It was among the last Godzilla films I got my hands on along with Godzilla vs. Biollante and that wait to see it is probably why I have some sentimental value for it. While the pace of the kaiju battle is off, I enjoy the tooth and claw aspect of the battle and I like the brutality of it. In some ways, the first kaiju battle is a horrific site and Godzilla's killing of Anguirus is theatric. I do not mind the human plot line of the love triangle with the pilots, which is one aspect of the film that I usually see people roast. I will admit though that this look of Godzilla is not one of his best.

11) Godzilla vs. Gigan: This was my #1 Showa film as a kid growing up. I did not notice the stock footage back then, so I really enjoyed the battle between the kaiju. The human cast was also humorous and the aliens were cockroaches, so this movie was a perfect storm for me growing up. Now that I am an adult and I am more familiar with the rest of the films, Godzilla vs. Gigan doesn't cut it for me anymore. The excessive use of stock footage alone brings it down for me and distracts from some awesome scenes featuring Gigan, who is a great designed kaiju. I've watched a podcast or two explaining how this movie can be interpreted as a commentary on the current status of the Series, but that is not enough for me to look past its flaws.

12) Son of Godzilla: I won't knock this film too hard because of Minilla. The creators were trying to show Godzilla in a different light for better or worse and I somehow appreciate how they would take the risk of showing Godzilla as a father. The human plot is okay and their manipulation of the weather does contribute to the monster action. Kamacuras may be a throw-away kaiju, but Kumonga is no joke, The Kumonga fight is another favorite of mine in the Showa era and I think that he was a legitimate threat to Godzilla. The score of this movie also gives it some points as well over the three films below it. It is a decent film but it is also one that I watch only once in a blue moon.

13) Ebirah, Horror of the Deep: I disliked this movie both as a kid and as an adult now. Ebirah is among my least favorite of Godzilla adversaries and when you throw in the Giant Condor, this Godzilla movie never really does it for me. The human characters are alright, but they cannot elevate the film from the monster action in my opinion. It also shows that this was meant for Kong when you see Godzilla giving googly eyes to a hot chick. One thing I will give this film is that it has a good entrance for Godzilla. I like how they find him in a cave and he is awoken by a thunderstorm. Real nice intro and entrance but the rest is a no go for me.

14) Godzilla vs. Megalon: Loved this movie as a kid for the fights and the cheese, but I cannot get behind it now as an adult. Jet Jaguar was also my least favorite aspect of this film and now that I am aware of Ultraman, it gets even less brownie points from me. I really dislike Megalon's goofy personality, especially since I love the design and I think the kaiju has so much potential for a future movie. I loved Megalon in the Pipeworks games and it was a let down to see how he acted in his actual film. The look of Godzilla in this film is one of my least favorites although I think Toho was able to improve on it in the final two Showa films.

15) All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge: My least favorite film of the Showa era by a margin. I watched it in Japanese for the first time last year and it did no favors for its ranking. Ichiro is my least favorite character in a Godzilla film and hearing him in Japanese made it even worse. The opening credits song was super cringe and the use of stock footage bugs throughout bugs me. One saving grace is Gabara, whose design is very unique even though I am not a fan of him and his awful sounding roar. As long as I remember that this movie is not in the canon story and takes place in Ichiro's imagination, it keeps me from writing it off all together.

Here is my ranking of the Showa Godzilla films with other Toho films:
