Re: The Disney Thread.
I'm not interested in politics.
I watched the new Mulan and I thought it was just ok. They put in some Wuxia inspired action scenes but they were very underused. Donnie Yen and Jet Li are in the movie and they do have some action scenes but it was very few. Girl was alright. She was in The Forbidden Kingdom with Jet Li and Jackie Chan and I like that movie more.
I love the 98 cartoon and the animated sequel is fairly poor.

It's not "politics" so much as it is genocide, but okay then.Jeff-Goldblum2 wrote:I'm not interested in politics.
Just be warned that to some ears, that's going to come across as "I don't care about human lives."

Re: The Disney Thread.
Back in first half of the 40's, Disney made Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros to find audiences in an alternative region to Germany, in the form of Latin America. This was obviously done because at the time, the west was at war with Germany. Now that there is this whole Mulan fiasco over the Chinese concentration camps, Where else do you think Disney could turn to? I think either Africa or South East Asia.

I don't think that'll happen because a. Nobody makes money like China and b. We aren't at war with China

It does sometimes seem like a war with China is inevitable, but I don't think it would happen soon. Besides being economically devastating for much of the world, it would be a long, hard, costly war for us. This wouldn't be Iraq where we can waltz in and kick the shit out of them in a month, China can actually put up a very serious fight.

Re: The Disney Thread.
If anything the entertainment industry is actually going to slide even further towards China after this past year of financial ruin for them. As they will be desperate to recoup losses brought about by poor management, unsustainable expectations, and the total whiplash of having a whole year come to a standstillLegendZilla wrote:Back in first half of the 40's, Disney made Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros to find audiences in an alternative region to Germany, in the form of Latin America. If corporations were willing to abide by Chinese restrictions and interests during a period of financial stability, you can imagine what they'll be willing to let slide when they truly do need the cash and have a much weaker bargaining position
The only other market that can really compete with the Chinese market is India but their market is way less developed and entertainment focused then China.

Sheesh i know the film underperformed a ton, but i'm still kinda shocked it isn't making more.
A guy who randomly stumbled upon this place one day, invested much too much time into it, and now appears to be stuck here for all eternity..and strangely enough, i do not regret it!

Yeah, although maybe a better example would have been like... the Falklands War? Although that wasn't the U.S. But it was a very brief conflict, not the month of 'major combat operations" followed by literal years of increasing bloodshed.
I'm straining to think of a modern U.S. conflict that didn't drag on for years. I was tempted to mention Grenada but that was too short.

That film didn't underperformed. Disney gets all that money for themselves because there was no theater. This was a success.GodzillaFan1990's wrote:That's a good thing.Gigantis wrote:Sheesh i know the film underperformed a ton, but i'm still kinda shocked it isn't making more.

If Mulan's reported budget of $200m is accurate, then no it was not a success by any means at $260m.

They were looking at 0 with the film just sitting. The 260 is all going back to Disney and that's just who bought it at the time the article was written. For an experiment on streaming it was a success.UltramanGoji wrote:If Mulan's reported budget of $200m is accurate, then no it was not a success by any means at $260m.
Blu ray and other sales will help most likely.
The 260 is also just in the US.

Not necessarily. If $200 million is just the budget, that's not factoring in the marketing costs, which are probably around the same amount.miguelnuva wrote:They were looking at 0 with the film just sitting.
