Hey Jomei, am I horrible person for wondering if either of the B2 Bombers said “payback time” to each other?

I must admit, unironically, I’ve been thinking a lot about Shin Godzilla since I heard about the MOBAs being used. I resisted saying anything until the situation seemed to die down, but i think in some ways shin might wind up being prophetic. :shingodzillapurple:

I thought about posting something like, "As Shin Godzilla fans know, there are never any terrible unintended consequences from dropping bunker busters on nuclear threats," but it was such a serious situation even I held off.

I was incredibly happy by this news, and it has, temporarily, restored my faith in “progressive causes”. However, if you look into Zohran’s goals, a lot of it is less about spouting some stupid values that aren’t tangible, and instead providing real and tangible affordability for NYCers.

Specifically, the rent freeze, the free buses, the city-owned supermarkets (in the food deserts), and the ambitious goal of making all CUNYs free (I graduated from one!) is a fantastic idea.

Of course, a lot of these ideas are overly ambitious, and I’m sure in the long term there will be criticisms to be directed at him. It’s a slap in the face to the useless fuckers like Cuomo, who don’t understand why Trump and his cronies are doing well; it’s because they have a vision. Cuomo and the mainstream loser Democrats have no drive, and we need more people like Zohran.

Again, Zohran could be all bark and no bite, but he seems to actually have a sincere platform and ideas. What I like about him the most, is that despite his clear socialist and liberal edge, he sincerely seems to be for all New Yorkers and knows how to be tactful.

Better than Eric Adams that’s for damn fucking sure.

Not really, from the text I assumed it was a meme more critical of Mamdani and the guy in the photo looked kind of amused seeing a bodega.

Still, a very funny meme not gonna lie.

It's how it always goes. When people hear actual Progressive policies, as opposed to the fairy tales the Right and "Middle" come up with, they find that they like them. Now we just gotta see if Schermu and Jeffries can practice what they preach. Here's your mayoral candidate, guys, about time to get behind him, don't you think?

It’s Boris Yeltsin, a former leader of the Soviet Union. Supposedly, after visiting the United States, he was shocked by the variety of foods Americans had easy access to here. It’s one of the things that led to the end of communism.

The meme that Jomei posted can be interrupted in a bunch of ways. One, can be that city-run supermarkets will/wont be popular as they won’t have variety, and that it’ll just be more bloat on NYC’s budget. Simultaneously, this would drive down family owned businesses within NYC.

The other more obvious comparison is directly comparing this idea to communism, and saying that NY’ers will be saddened by the lack of variety to the point they’ll be shocked if they go to Hoboken (ew)!

I think this city-run supermarket idea is a bit outlandish, but what the detractors don’t say is that his idea is mainly just opening them in a few critical areas, mainly food desserts. He’s not looking to replace anything. NYC does have a lot of supermarkets (Trader Joes, Whole Foods, etc…) but there are large pockets where the situation isn’t so good.

The widening gap in nutritional health and life expectancy between rich and poor is a multifaceted problem. As such, it requires multiple solutions.

Addressing the issue of food deserts and lack of access to healthy foods is only one of them. The above article even states that nutritional education is another intervention worth investigating. And while I don't remember him specifically mentioning health education, another one of Mamdani's goals is to improve school access and educational support for poorer neighborhoods that tend to be associated with said food deserts. It's not like he's just gonna drop a supermarket on the corner of Grant and 165th and call it a day Mission Accomplished

Oh, and it seems Republican reps are already calling for the investigation and deportation of Mamdani. Right on schedule

As the article indicates, people have access. They just go a bit further for it. They shop in those proper supermarkets at almost the same rate as higher income households, still buying 90% of their food from grocery stores, but they choose to buy other things.

New York already spends a ton on education, nearly double the national average, to middling results. I'm skeptical of the notion that people have not been informed about the dangers of junk and processed food. Some people just don't learn or make good decisions even when you educate, inform, and offer them opportunities. But any disparate outcome is, in the progressive worldview, ipso facto injustice, so State Action is required.

One concrete way you might be able to immediately make some changes would be to further restrict the types of items purchasable with EBT. That's probably the only way you can get a lot of people to buy more healthful options. But I know the very notion is anathema to the Mamdani worldview and certainly wouldn't have gotten him votes the way his "No Homework" and "Recess All Day" style proposals did.

Cake every night daddy.

Yeah, one thing I’ve learned is that some people are just idiots. Many of Mamdani’s proposals are too heavy on state action. I’m of the belief that things are a mixture of personal responsibility and state access (ignoring this food issue for a moment) and the political extremes on opposite ends tend to not admit things need to work on both ends.

Also, it is amusing to see Zohran suddenly be catapulted to a national figure. He’s at most going to be the mayor of NYC. While not underselling the importance of the role, it’s not like he would have any power outside of the city. It amuses me seeing parts of the nation vilify him. I think the supermarket idea is the weakest idea of his, but as I mentioned earlier it’s not as extreme or expansive as people are making it out to be. if he’s actually elected, it’ll be amusing to see how much he can actually do versus how many false promises. He’ll most likely be another Deblasio.

Zohran is at most going to be the mayor of NYC right now. If he succeeds and is popular in that role, what's next? The House? The Senate? Governor? ... the White House? Can you imagine what a living hell this country would be if we all had to have free childc*re or a higher minimum w*ge?

Cuomo concedes the primary but is not dropping out of the race. People booted his ass out as governor so why the hell did he think they'd elect him to become mayor. Plus that POS Adams is running as an independent. Guy might as well just become a Republican, he already basically is one anyway. The establishment Dems would rather let this party die and give the opposition free reign than actually electing candidates that actually wanna fight and change people's lives for the better. The party is at its lowest approval in history because of them and yet they still refuse to relinquish control.
