Mothra vs Godzilla and GTTHM are top 3 Godzilla films to me. GTTHM to me sums up nearly the entire Godzilla catalog very well. It has Godzilla doing a little bit of everything he does in the series before and after.

Agreed that it does a little bit of everything. You've got the fantastical elements with the Shobijin and Mothra, aliens with the Venusian and King Ghidorah, and "standard" monsters mutated by radiation with Rodan and Godzilla. You've got cops and an assassination plot, brief musical numbers, big monster fights, and destruction. You've also got monsters acting goofy, but then also discussing and talking about serious issues.

Also has villian Godzilla, hero Godzilla. Solo monster fight and team up fights.

GTTHM > Mothra vs Godzilla in my opinion but it´s a question of personal taste.

Id agree with this. I think GTTHM is the quintessential Godzilla movie personally.

In that case, this would be a good intro film for people. There's something for everyone to enjoy.
The problem with doing nothing is that you never know when you're finished.

It was too dark to see properly. He was more like a beast than a human being.

Yeah GTTHM is one of the best movies in the whole series and has something for everyone to enjoy. It's a crowd pleaser and is a great movie to get people into Godzilla. Particularly kids. I remember the first time I got to watch this on VHS with my brother when we were little kids and just getting so hyped up over Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra kicking Ghidorah's ass.

I dunno. I really don’t mean to sound like a contrarian, but I feel that if you introduced a general audience member to this movie they’d completely laugh it off. It’s way too silly and out there for most people’s tastes, the special effects are extremely hit and miss (mostly miss), and the pseudoscience is off the charts. Not to mention the fact that it’s sixty years old. Most people these days barely watch anything older than the 1990s.

Agreed...with the attitude and mindset listed above, why even bother showing a "general audience member" *any* post 54' Showa film?

You could show a "general audience member" a Heisei or Millennium film instead, though you still risk the same as all of the above plus putting them to sleep as well.

I don't really get the "which film is the best to introduce a" general audience member" to Godzilla???!" debates I've seen pop up recently...it doesn't really matter what film you choose to show them...irregardless of you show 70s GvsMegalon camp or a Golden Age Mothra vs Godzilla classic, they'll either dig giant Japanese monsters tearing things up on screen, or they won't, simple as that. And quite frankly, who gives a crap if "a general audience" member doesn't like it? A lot of fans seem to really earn for acceptance from others for loving this unique genre or are secretly embarrassed about being a G fan.

Also, it's irrelevant when analyzing this or any other film's merits, so not sure why some have brought it up in this thread beyond just another attempt to tear this film down (along with constantly pitting it against GvsMonster Zero)

This is a classic.
Damn straight 8-) When you think "Showa" Godzilla, this film perfectly encapsulates what the Showa era is all about. :Godzilla68: :KingGhidorah64: :Rodan56: :Mothra61:

I agree with you here. It's a tough pill to swallow for Godzilla fans but most general western audiences would actually not enjoy most of Toho's films. The west loving Godzilla Minus One is even more miraculous because of this fact.

Cosigned.

To give Spuro some credit, I think he's right that a lot of people would react the way he describes. I just don't think it's worth paying any attention to that. :KingGhidorah64:

I think GtthM is a great film to newcomers if you have seen and enjoyed King Kong vs Godzilla and Mothra vs Godzilla beforehand. I think without at least one of those films viewed prior new fans will not enjoy this as much.

The connection to Mothra vs Godzilla probably deepens the fun of seeing the larvae show up and work with Godzilla and Rodan.

MVG also gives a new viewer the chance to experience the glory of the adult Mothra prop in action.

This was actually how I first watched this movie. I rented both and watched Mothra vs. Godzilla and then Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster without even meaning to watch them in chronological order. It was nice to see the call back to the earlier film, but I was saddened by the death of the second Mothra larva and wanted to know how she died exactly.

So do you guys still like the dub for this movie? I'm pretty partial to viewing Godzilla movies in the original Japanese with subtitles these days. But GTTHM has what I think is one of the most enjoyable dubs in the entire series.
