It's not a movie but sounds like Project Nemesis show is still a thing thankfully.

Update on the Norwegian kaiju flick, The Kraken. The North America distribution rights have been grabbed up by MGM and has reportedly been scheduled for an October 24th release (per IMDB).

Huh, I thought that was already dead. Hope it get the green light.

Apparently there's a new low budget Japanese kaiju film called Kaiju Guy, about an aspiring filmmaker who uses an assignment to make a promotional film for a town as an excuse to make an old-school tokusatsu kaiju film (or something to that effect).

Reviews are good, and apparently some major airlines are carrying it as an inflight movie. All the letterboxd reviews are from people on planes!

Krakens are popular I guess. Another Kraken film is out, this time from Russia. Actually looks kinda neat. No idea if it'll be available anywhere outside it's home country.

I've noticed that outside the "tentpoles" of Godzilla and Ultraman most of Japan's current/modern kaiju film content has been low or no budget awful "parodies/comedies" and not sincere attempts at at the genre (there's a few exceptions I'm sure, but...).
They're like Japan's version of Asylum films.

The amount of washed up foreign actors being advertised, instead of decent info about the movie, should be a warning. I suspect we’ll get many more of these soon as Godzilla’s popularity increases.

There’s a few exceptions, but yes, this is true. The bulk of them tended to come out when Godzilla wasn’t around, and tend to be poor imitations intending to lure desperate fans.

Raiga whatever that was was horrid. Often they’ll get a suit, and that’ll be the selling point, rather than the plot itself.
You do have stuff that’s one tier above that (Attack on the G8 Summit/Death Kappa) but that’s about it.

I'm hopeful for Brush of the God however, it looks like a passion project and I think I read SRS is intending to show it in theaters in the US in some capacity instead of their usual straight to video thing.

Raiga was bad, but the first film Reigo was...decent. Not great by any stretch, but unlike the later ones clearly showed care and effort in the plot and attempt.
Howl from Beyond the Fog was actually pretty great if you're alright with its choice in using stylistic puppetry.

But those are the only real exceptions I think amongst the crap. Hopefully the rising or continuing success of Godzilla and Ultraman will inspire more honest and sincere attempts in the genre again instead of the glut of parodies or low effort comedies.

Cool, the Martians have got tripods again! Makes me wish I had Amazon Prime.

Mmm, CGI looks a little janky in parts, but I'm guardedly interested. The time and the place are interesting choices, anyway. 60's-70's might have been the nadir in scientific interest in dinosaurs, so I imagine the characters will have little if any idea about what they're up against when fast-moving, feathered monsters come charging out of the jungle at them.
