The movie says Godzilla is going for the lair not to eat Tiamat, he needs the energy from the lair. Skar King's fur being dyed reeks of revisionism. Weren't there ape kids with orange fur? I bet the dye explanation is trying to cover for the squicky implications of that, and just not doing a very good job thinking it through.
Also yes, Suko in the novel even thinks Skar is his dad because the red fur and wants Skar to acknowledge him.
