The ends justify the means here, but the means are still pretty bad. And that's fine! Godzilla has always been an asshole.

Skar King's fur being dyed reeks of revisionism. Weren't there ape kids with orange fur? I bet the dye explanation is trying to cover for the squicky implications of that, and just not doing a very good job thinking it through.
The movie says Godzilla is going for the lair not to eat Tiamat, he needs the energy from the lair. If Tiamat would have submitted and left she would be alive.

Also yes, Suko in the novel even thinks Skar is his dad because the red fur and wants Skar to acknowledge him.

Anyone see Wingard trying to reframe the Godzilla Tiamat scene here with his comments?
What’s the source on these statements?
Most of these are pointless observations that just seem like beliefs of Wingard. The whole “King” kong thing is a good example. Although it does make sense, he did beat the King.

The thing about Skar King painting itself is weird too.

I thought the MV can't legally use the name King Kong, but Kong on its own is allowed. That's what I've always heard as the reason for leaving "King" out of the name. And it sounds a lot more believable than Wingard's new story.

Statements like Wingard's are why I choose not to acknowledge or obsess over whatever lore there is. There is at least one hole that needs filled per movie that ignores something that was already established.

The marketing for TNE in December of 2023 seemed to be implying that Skar King was on Skull Island around the same time as Kong in the 70's. The lore is either really unclear at times, or it seems that they make stuff up as they go along. As a result I stopped caring about it and don't take what the directors say at face value.

Kong is Ness and Skull Island is apart of Undertale.

Gib money.

Wingard did some kind of Fandango at home interview about the film.

‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’ star Delroy Lindo says the producers wanted to make the film's human characters as engaging and compelling as possible.

“We worked to flesh out my character and make the character as humanly relatable as possible. Because they very smartly understand, in order to make these big CGI films work, the human element also has to be compelling for audiences.”

GMO may actually have had a positive effect on the Legendary suits, then. Fascinating.

With regard to the lore, I pretty much treat the MV as an anthology. A bunch of loosely connected stories taking place in a vaguely shared setting. What the Showa series was, more or less. That seems to be what Legendary is doing, given that every director so far has had a distinctive vision that barely aligns with the others. It's a good thing, I'd say, since it allows for a lot of flexibility.

It's a little more complicated, but the simple answer here is that there was a federal court case a few years ago that clarified that creators who use a public domain character have a right to refer to the character by name regardless of existing trademarks. And since the character is called "King Kong" both colloquially and in the text of the 1932 novel, you can call him King Kong now. Legendary has been able to for a few years now.

Huh. Well, I imagine Legendary will stick to using Kong on its own for simplicity, but some future entry that serves as a finale for Kong might put "King" in the title for the drama of it.

“I clapped when they said KING KONG!”.

Honestly, just calling it Kong, differentiated it all enough. A lot of it just has a better ring to it too.

Yeah, I can see that. At this point, this far along in the MV, there's no real reason to change things - may as well save it for a suitably big moment or entry.

Yup.

If Legendary doesn't do it, then I expect the first Kong stuff to come after KK'33 and Son of Kong's copyrights expire in a few years to use it - specifically so they can differentiate from the MV Kong.

After a recent viewing of this movie, I can safely say it's my favorite of the Monsterverse.

I've gone back and forth a couple of times between either putting this one or Godzilla vs. Kong at the top, but I might be able to finally say that the award goes to this one. The movie has its flaws, no doubt about it, but it's the only Monsterverse movie I can actually sit down and watch all the way through. With the rest of them, there's certain scenes, plotlines, or characters that bore/annoy me, so I end up skipping through sections of those movies. I don't have that problem with this movie. The pacing is fast, the characters are entertaining, the monster action/screen presence is consistent, and the balls to the wall style really works for me.

I also dig the 80s aesthetics that the movie oozes. From the set pieces, color palette, soundtrack (including needle drops), and just overall plot, the movie really is a big budget Saturday Morning cartoon. Godzilla evolving with a neon, color change power up and Kong getting a crazy, electronic power glove just adds to it with that 80's "cool character changes to sell merchandise" attitude. Skar King, Shimo, and Skar's lava lair also feel like something straight out of Masters of the Universe.

I would say that you’re engaging with the film exactly how it’s mean to be seen. Wingard would approve.

I still find some of the last third a bit rushed but it’s the most enjoyable experience I’ve had with an MV film in theaters.

GKOtM was probably the worst but it has become a favorite of mine with time.

"Kong's like... King of the Hollow Earth."

"Say that again?"
