I'm gonna go through MG74 and see what Can was talking about. With some of these movies, some of the camera work wasn't the greatest at times. Sometimes the actor didn't have the clearest of focus on them. The first 3 minutes of GTTHM has some issues there.king_ghidorah wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 2:56 pmOk. These look legit amazing!

I was just looking back at the screencaps of MG 74 on X and it looks equally as good as TOMG.
I’m very happy with the quality on all of these discs personally.

Honestly, after seeing it compared to some other sources I think that is a big part of the softness I was seeing. It’s just inherent in the source material that some shots are out of focus apparently.Chris55 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 5:38 pmI'm gonna go through MG74 and see what Can was talking about. ^ That's common with old kung fu movies when you see them in pristine HD trasnfers; out of focus shots are common.

Re: Toho's Godzilla 4K Restoration Project
It's true that even HD transfers reveal all kinds of issues, like visible wires, seams, and out of focus shots that we never really noticed when these films were projected on film. That's because gate judder and other issues with the physical movement of film through a projector obscured these kinds of problems.
Yet for some reason we still have certain filmmakers going on and on about how the physical projection of film somehow actually has more detail than high quality digital projection. It's simply not true, as multiple studies have shown. Maybe 20 years ago, but not today
Film is great as a capture medium, as we see from these transfers. There's all kinds of detail inherent in these old prints. We just never got to see it in theaters of the past, or on TV.

I think it's fine. There are some shots where people look "soft" but overall, the picture quality looks great to me.

Re: Toho's Godzilla 4K Restoration Project
As someone whom has bought, but has not had time to watch these 4Ks until recently, to me these releases blow their predecessors out of the water. Is it true that this quality of transfers should have been and could have been made years ago... YES. On the other hand the fact that these new transfers exist is to me a Godsend, I was of the small group that thought that after the Criterion fiasco that Toho was NEVER gonna rescan any of these films minus the original film and milk those Hi-Visions till the end of time.
