In a sea of inconsistency and mediocracy, SOG continues to shine. Below are my thoughts:

Things I liked:

- Again, I love history and am biased towards this series and RAT, so the historical settings that always open these books with stylized art suited for the time periods are a genuine thrill and open each book on an exciting note, and that is the case here with Rodan protecting the Mayans from the Spanish Conquistadors.

- Related to the above, the twist of Aaron Burr being revealed as a Xilien (and the GFW incarnation, the first time seen in any of the books).

- This may be one of KG’s better appearances in these comics next to HCW & Rivals VS: King Ghidorah. KG not only looks great (though again, why does it *always* have to be the Heisei incarnation instead of Showa? ), but is also properly depicted as he should be: Godzilla’s #1 arch enemy and most powerful foe. :KingGhidorah64:

- While a bit brief, the battle between King Ghidorah and Godzilla/Rodan/Hedorah/Mothra was extremely fun and entertaining.  This is how battles should be depicted in these comics! :keizer: Inaki Miranda and Frank Tieri are really adept at crafting great kaiju battles, such as Godzilla vs Ebirah/Oodako in HTBD. The writer/artists of the recent disappointing MG vs KG could have taken a lesson from this. :godzilla1962: :Hedorah: :Mothra61: :Rodan56:

No real negatives nor things I "disliked". I guess it would have been nice to see the likes of Anguirus, Gorosaurus, or even Orga as they haven't been utilized much in this second run of IDW comics, but this is just a general nitpick and not directed towards SOG. However, similar to HTDB #4, there are quite a few story threads that need to be wrapped up rather quickly in SOG #5, which is a concern. To Tiere and Miranda's credit, they managed to pull this off perfectly in HTBD#5, so hopefully they will be able to do it off again.

Great stuff as usual, as HTBD and SOG along with HCW have set the standard and benchmark to what other G comics/ongoings/minis should strive to achieve.

However, I see some sad parallels between this mini wrapping up & Rage Across Time in 2016. RAT was a fantastic mini that unfortunately was overshadowed by the atrocious Oblivion. Shortly thereafter, there was a long 4 year hiatus of G comics. SOG is leaps and bounds above MMPR II, Rivals VS Rd 4, Skate or Die (I’m sure some will do the usual devil’s advocate spiel and attempt to argue in favor of some of above…but it’s really no contest). With Rivals VS soon coming to an end (and going out on a whimper sadly), no new series nor One-Shots announced (the lack of a KG 60th Anniversary One-shot is very telling), and nearly all G comics aside from a few select issues suddenly being removed from the IDW Online Shop, I think we may be nearing the end of this latest run of G comics once SOG and Monsterpiece Theatre wrap up. Honestly, it might be for the best to let another company take a crack at Godzilla (there has been some very good stuff from time to time from IDW, but far too many misfires and inconsistency as well)....

Issue #4 review from JTISREBORN:

Issue #5 will be out Nov. 13th. I totally agree with JTISREBORN in that it will be interesting to see how they wrap up everything up in a single issue, and this needs to be extended beyond 5 issues (hope this leads to Tieri and Inaki penning a future 3rd series in the HTBD saga)...

Issue 5 was great! What a ramp up/huge twist!
Spoiler:
Here there be aliens time!
Overall, great series, although for obvious reasons it doesn’t feel as much of a clear and finished story as the last one. The pacing and structure also makes the primary monster action. Feel a tad underwhelming, but in reality a lot occurs.

Each issue is:
Monster in Stylized Historical Time
Historical/Sons of Giants Fiction
Big Battle in Rome

The Big Battle in Rome, is actually enough content to fill a singular issue of a regular comic book, but because it’s been spread out it feels a lot less impressive than it is. However, it is really cool and done well.

I liked the stylized bits too, although I wish there was something a little more to them. Maybe a panel two of style, and then actually more directly showing what happened?

Due to work, I’m a bit behind on reviews overall (gotta love 80 hour work weeks), but just read issue #5, and here are my thoughts:

Things I liked

- Benjamin Franklin’s secret room is really neat and has some very cool Easter eggs. Foreshadowing Mecha-KG perhaps?

- The battle between Godzilla, Mothra, Hedorah, Rodan, and King Ghidorah has been one of the better battles seen in a while, and the climax of that battle in this issue was very exciting and well thought out. Like HTBD, Tieri and Miranda like the spread their kaiju battles out over several issues instead of just quickly trying to rush and cram everything in a single page/a few panels like a lot of recent writers (i.e. hacks) on these IDW books often do.

- Interesting mixture of using the GFW Xiliens along with the traditional Showa Xilien UFO ships.

- As I mentioned several times, I wondered how Tieri and Miranda would be able to wrap everything up in a single issue….turns out they didn’t…and that’s not a bad thing. Great, unexpected cliffhanger during Lewis and Clark’s expedition.

Miranda’s artwork continues to shine. Great stuff as usual, especially his different stylized montages at the beginning of each issue. Though his artwork for Space Godzilla looks a bit off.

A few nitpicks

- Still not too high on having Hedorah on the side of the “good” Kaiju….it’s an odd role that doesn’t really fit him. Though it’s cool to see him battle KG.

- I always opined how authors often overuse MG when it comes to mecha…sadly, we’re starting to see that same trend with Jet Jaguar lately.

To sum up, HTBD & SOG have quickly ascended to the HCW-tier for me as I’m absolutely loving this series. It’s a shame that this has been overshadowed by hot garbage like GvsMMPRII, for this series has been IDW’s true bright spot in a recent sea of inconsistency and mediocracy. Bring on HTBA :keizer: :mugal: :xilian:

Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens' #1 to Invade Comic Shops in May
Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1 arrives in comic shops and online May 14.

IDW Publishing has just the thing for Godzilla fans who "want to believe". This May, the Eisner Award-nominated Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons trilogy begins its final chapter as writer Frank Tieri, illustrator Angel Hernandez, and color artist Heather Breckel team up for Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1.

Set to arrive in comic shops on May 14, Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1 kicks off an all-new limited series featuring none other than the Xiliens from 1965's Invasion of Astro-Monster movie and 2004's Godzilla Final Wars film.

From IDW's official solicitation:

GODZILLA: HERE THERE BE ALIENS is both a fully standalone limited series and the epic conclusion to the Eisner-nominated GODZILLA: HERE THERE BE DRAGONS trilogy! Brought to us by veteran scribe Frank Tieri (Wolverine, Jughead: The Hunger) and new series artist Angel Hernandez (STAR TREK). It’s the middle of the 20th century, and Americans everywhere are terrified by the strange lights hovering above them in the night sky…and they should be. These UFOs are actually the Xilien invasion force! Revealed to have already been on Earth during the events of Here There Be Dragons: Sons of Giants, the Xiliens have been attempting to destabilize the planet with the help of kaiju from outer space! With the aliens’ claws deep inside the U.S. government, will our rogue operatives manage to band together to save humanity?

"Well, all good things must come to an end as they say - and the GODZILLA HERE THERE BE DRAGONS saga is no different... but we fully intend to go out with a bang - a Big Bang if you will - with GODZILLA: HERE THERE BE ALIENS," wrote Tieri, "So yes, a story that started off with pirates and lost treasure in HERE THERE BE DRAGONS and then found itself in even more historical moments involving secret monster cults with the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon in the follow up THE SONS OF GIANTS, will now entangle itself in post-WW2 secret government cover ups and a huge Xilien invasion in HERE THERE BE ALIENS. It's everything we've been building up to, storywise and monsterwise - which means in addition to kaiju we've already seen like Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra, get ready for baddies of the Third Kind like Gigan, Space Godzilla, and Mechagodzilla."

"This War of the Worlds on steroids will all be seen through the eyes of Bob Jones, the last remaining agent of the project blue book-esque Project Colossus, a US government division specializing in proving the existence of kaju. Poor Bob's about to lose his job but keep in mind this is 1954 - and if you know your Godzilla history, you know what that means. So now suddenly they actually need Bob, for both his kaiju expertise and for the hope he can somehow get Godzilla and the gang to help them repel the Xilen's incoming invading forces. Fans can expect a nice mix of conspiracies, cover ups, monsters vs. aliens, monsters vs. monsters and even aliens vs. aliens - with more than a few surprises up our spacesuit sleeves. So look to the skies and join us Godzilla-heads... the final giant monster frontier awaits!" wrote Tieri.

Check out upcoming Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1 cover A by Fero Pe and cover B by Angel Hernandez below. Fans can ask their shop to pre-order a copy through April 7.

Looks good. I appreciate that it functions as both a stand alone and a conclusion to the saga. I assume they’ll flash back to show some form of resolution to what they set up in the previous series.

While there’s a big zoom forward in time, still will be cool as a historical fiction work.

I find the second cover a bit bold. No Godzilla, and what only appears to be a GFW Xillien, which has to be the most obscure creature to grace an IDW cover.

HTBA #2 covers and synopsis:
(W) Tieri, Frank (A) Angel Hernandez (CA) Fero Pe

The Xiliens have already invaded! An intergalactic conspiracy dating back hundreds of years is on the verge of tearing apart human society! Every encounter with space kaiju since King Ghidorah landed in ancient Egypt has been an attempt to destabilize life on Earth! Now, all over the planet, the Xiliens are landing-and with them, thousands upon thousands of Hedorah drones. Will one rogue government operative be enough to send these extraterrestrial attackers back into outer space?!

A few thoughts:

- Though I'm extremely excited for another chapter in arguably the best Godzilla minis/series since HCW, I am a bit concerned about Inaki Miranda being replaced on art duties. His great art and style complimented Frank Tieri's storytelling like peanut butter and jelly. I sincerely hope we do not see a significant drop off with Angel Hernandez.

- I'm confused...it says "ever since KG landed in Ancient Egypt", but in SOG, it was Mothra who appeared in Ancient Egypt, while KG appeared in Rome. :?: :Mothra61: :KingGhidorah64: Perhaps a typo in the solicitation? :xilian:

- Hedorah was treated as one of the "good kaiju / defenders" in SOG, but on cover A, he's back to battling Godzilla again. Not a complaint per se (one of the few things I did not like about SOG, as this role of a "defender of earth" ill-suits Hedorah imho), just odd considering how the SOG ended. Good to see him hopefully returning to his usual villianous role :Hedorah:

I have yet to read SOG, but I did read and enjoy HTBD. That said, I haven't decided if I'll read SOG before I read HTBA. Not that I think I'll dislike SOG, it's just that HTBA is said to work as a stand alone and has potential to be one of my favorite Godzilla comics. Godzilla alien invasion stories are my favorite, with Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla being my favorite Godzilla movie and the Rivals Ghidorah issue being one of my favorite Godzilla comics. This comic having an alien invasion, with the Xiliens, set in the 1950s... man. That's a great combo in my eyes.

While it’s not 1:1, I like the relative similarity in style between the previous two series. It’ll make it feel more consistent when reading the entire series as a whole. Neat.

HTBA#1 was great. I feel the artist matched Frank Teri’s art. You can still tell it’s a different artist, but it’s not a bizarre change.

The first issue was a bit slow, but like HTBD1, we know it’s a big and important build up. Lots of interesting world building details, and it already nails the conspiracy vibe. It’ll fit alongside the others nicely.

While it’s a bit disappointing we most likely won’t see what happened in the stinger of SOG, I like that we got to see the Simians, even if briefly. Generic looking new monsters too! Godzilla’s re-introduction was brief but great. Love that shot of all the tanks’s cannons pointed at him.

Lastly, I’m curious how they’ll handle Hedorah in the next issue. Seems like an excuse to have very fun alien drones attack a small town.

Just read this...is there a way we could just make Frank Tiere and James Stokoe the writers on every Godzilla comic from now on? :keizer: They're literally the only two writers I can trust at this point on Godzilla comics.

Onto my review:

Things I liked:

- Unlike SOG issue #1 which was hitting its stride right off the bat, HTBA #1 is more similar to the first issue of HTBD in which Godzilla played a very minimal role as the issue took its time setting things up. Some may not like this "slow-burn" approach, but it turned out great for HTBD. Solid stuff from Tiere as usual.

- When I heard that Angel Hernandez would be replacing Inaki Miranda, I was very concerned. I remember the huge drop off from Freddie Williams II's art from GvsMMPR1 to Baldemar Rivas's sloppy hot garbage on GvsMMPR2. Tiere and Miranda were like peanut butter & jelly, so it was a bit jarring to hear that Miranda was off the final installment of this series. But Hernandez accounts for himself nicely in this issue and while not quite up to Miranda's level, his art is nonetheless still very solid overall. Eager to see how his art holds up when more kaiju start appearing.

- Love how the Xiliens and Black Hole aliens were apparently at war (very cool angle, and an interesting premise that has never been explored before in regard to seeing the Xiliens, Nebulans, Mysteriens, Kilaaks, Black Hole Aliens, Seatopians, etc. engaged in conflict) and this was the reason why the initial kaiju attack in the 1800s (the cliffhanger of SOG #5...though it's very odd seeing showa MG as creation of the Xiliens instead of the Black Hole aliens :mugal: :xilian: :Mechagodzilla74: )

- One of the two alien kaiju controlled by the Black Hole aliens shown in flashbacks battling Gigan and SpaceGodzilla looks *very* similar to "The Stranger" from Dark Horse's Godzilla #17 (and even Soran as well)...perhaps a homage? If so, very cool (though the other monster looks like GINO, which is *NOT* cool :shit:).

- Frank Tiere manages to develop his main characters better than almost any other G comic writer, and this first issue is no different. We're only one issue in, and the characters of Bob Jones, Director Stone, Dr. Kyoto, and even Bob's wife Betty are already more engaging, interesting, and fleshed out than all three issues of Heist (and most of their other minis over the past few years) thus far.

Things I did not like:

- Sorry, but I think the army of "mini" Hedorahs is.....dumb. If Tiere wants to go this route, then why not make make them the more appropriate Young Forms / Aquatic Stages / Landing stages? Instead, they're just mini versions of the Final Hedorah form...shades of the awful mini Rodans/MGs from Oblivion (and I hope this is the last time I ever use HTBA and Oblivion in the same sentence).

- Also, Hedorah was one of the "defenders of earth" in SOG (a role I did not think suited Hedorah well *at all* and one of my few beefs with SOG) to help drive off the Xiliens King Ghidorah...and now Hedorah is the main instrument of the Xilians...huh? :?: Tiere has stated he has an affinity for Hedorah, but sadly, he doesn't quite seem to have a grasp on how to use him. :Hedorah:

Other than my gripes about Hedorah in SOG and now HTBA (similar to my irritation with the generic bats/giant turtles from HTBD), the series seems off to a good start. Can't wait for issue #2!

Promising start. I like the men in black/conspiracy angle on display here. Also a major major fan of the Black Hole Aliens being included (guess "Simians" is now an official name for them?), hopefully this extends to the Nebulans and the Kilaak too. Would love a full-scale galactic alien war between all the Toho races, though I'm tempering my expectations in that regard.

Godzilla is on a rampage. Hedorah probes are everywhere. Xilien UFOs light up the sky. And now, Mechagodzilla has joined the battle?! Fear not-Jet Jaguar is here! The Americans have slowly been building this gigantic android defender, originally designed by Benjamin Franklin (yes, that Benjamin Franklin!), for an occasion such as this. But will Jet be enough to fend off this space kaiju onslaught?!

So....MG & JJ again, eh? 🥱 Seems more of the same from numerous recent IDW comics as this is the well they often seem to turn to post-2020. Not being a downer as this still sounds neat and I fully trust Tiere to deliver the goods, but Gigan and even SG (no favorite of mine) would be more exciting/intriguing to see at this point (though I bet they'll probably show up eventually). :Gigan: :Spacegodzilla: Love that they're referring back to Benjamin Franklin's secret lab from SOG, as there was some intriguing easter eggs there (Could Mecha-KG show up?)...

Just finished Sons of Giants. Yeah quite liked it! I was torn on whether I wanted 'more pirates with kaiju' but it did something different with flashbacks and conspiracy theory. That issue #2 reveal was pretty great and I wondered if this historic figure was going to be more heroic or villain. I guess with that new threat I had to side with the historic figure. Yeah this was great and I liked Hedorah being the forth member with Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan. A neat change of pace form being Anguiruis or Gorosaurus. Now I get why the third series is 'here be aliens.' Neat little saga we got going across multiple minis.

IDW Publishing · Releases Sep 10, 2025
Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #4
Overview

The alien invasion of Earth continues! Mechagodzilla! Gigan! SpaceGodzilla! Simians! Xiliens! Jet Jaguar! Hedorah! It’s an all-out kaiju brawl, where the only clear loser is humanity! Is it possible that our rogue government agent will be able to take the country back from the Xilien invaders? And even if he does, will there even be a planet left when this is all over?

Find out in the penultimate issue of the final entry in the Here There Be Dragons saga!

I can't decide if that Jet Jaguar cover is the best or worst cover I've ever seen  :JetJaguar:
It seems Mecha-KG will be appearing...makes sense based off of the drawings seen lying around Benjamin Franklin's secret lab in SOG...

Excellent second issue. Great mixture of more historical fiction that is interwoven with Kaiju action. Loved the development of various conspiracies as well as monster choices. Glad we got some confusion about Sons of Giants answered.
