TIL Tapwing did a Shimo redesign
Image
Not gonna lie, I don't really think this one holds up. The head looks phenomenal and I love the idea of Shimo's spikes freezing over like that but it's all kinda ruined by how wonky the anatomy is, especially when it comes to the limbs.
Back from the dead and... not really making the most of it, honestly.

it's not bad, maybe a little too hard on the lizard aspect considering how massive shimo is supposed to be, but a much better design then the official one and it's rather dogshit anatomy. the dirtier sleet greys and black claws, lips and eyelids are a really nice way to work in the polar bear inspiration without overdoing it.

I'm doing sketches for my redesign of Godzilla, I'm excited to show it off.

In the meantime, has anyone seen the new Mr. Monstrosities gamera Redesign?

checked it out, and gah damn is that a cool design. i really like how it really leans hard into the bioweapon angle. the Mata-mata or almost sturgeonlike nose and whiskers are also pretty cool.

Here's my redesign/new form of Rodan, called Corporate Rodan

His powers include working a 9 to 5, having an 84-minute commute both ways, and having no chance of getting a promotion in the next 4 years, but at least his health insurance plan is serviceable.

Wow, been a little bit. I havent been on this site as much, mainly because my main focus has been my webcomic project. But Ive recently come back to work on this Godzilla a bit more.

Left is the original sketch I posted months ago, right is the updated version. Essentially the same design with minor tweaks and a more aggressive pose. The one thing thats still a bit up in the air design wise is the dorsal plates. Haven't decided if Im going with these or going to do something more unique and out there.

I gotta say, the more angular approach is really working here. Can't wait to see the finished product.

pretty neat! if i were to give any criticisms it would mostly be giving him a bit more gut/body between the arms and legs, but that's probably more applicable for more realistic designs.
i really like the extended "crack" between the upper and lower jaws.

You know, I have to say that looking back through this thread while finishing up my own Godzilla (with the goal of eventually doing more kaiju), Ive gained some insight on the design process and have actually come to appreciate some of the more out there elements of some of these designs. Its like the whole thing with Godzilla 2014 concept art: that some concepts would push things to the absolute extremes to see how far you can go before you lose the character. A lot of art here feels like that, and its given me design insight on what exactly makes Godzilla Godzilla.

I also do feel the need to apologize for some of the stuff Ive said in this thread. Ive definitely been very rude about some of my opinions and I especially find how much of a stickler to "the rules" I was extremely cringe in retrospect. I do believe genuinely that there is a threshold, a sweet spot between "too safe/not interesting" and "completely unrecognizable" but I was very dismissive of ideas that didn't fit my own criteria and that was wrong of me. I should have been more considerate of what the artist's original vision was for each redesign.

I mean... Yeah, some people were very harsh to a certain artist. He actually makes some pretty decent Godzilla art nowadays

The now third iteration of my Godzilla redesign is complete!
Image
001- Godzilla
My supervisor has given me the unique task of documenting, studying the various Kaiju of the world. And I'll admit that it seemed to me like quite the daunting task at first, but its true that Ive always had a degree of captivation with these creatures. And obviously Godzilla is the first to come to mind. He's the big one, the one that got us into the mess we are in today....and quite possibly the only thing stopping the REDACTED from finishing us off completely.

The first records of Godzilla's species date back to the early 1400s, the age of exploration. Travelers described large quadrupedal "reptomammals" (they were obviously not aware of the concept of synapsids at the time) that stalked the shores of a number of smaller islands and atolls in the Pacific, south of Japan. Though these creatures notably differed from Godzilla himself, they are still believed by REDACTED to be patient zero.

Godzilla as we know him today made his grand debut in front of the world in the early 2000s. The 5th kaiju on record, and the first created by man, in a sense. Its believed that Godzilla became irradiated during the nuclear bomb tests in the 1950s. He then grew to an absolutely titanic size over the next half century. Humanity was already suffering casualties in the fight against the kaiju threat, but Godzilla was different. No kaiju before or since could compare to his awesomeness. And with his arrival marked the end of human civilization.

In the decade since, we have attempted to rebuild from the ashes, to coexist with the kaiju and try and understand them. Some saw Godzilla as the restablisher of balance, that humanity were a plague that the kaiju have cleansed. Others believe that Godzilla is in fact, some sort of God. Others still see him as humanity's savior, especially after REDACTED Whatever he is, Im fascinated by it.

Ive only seen him in person a few times. He likes to spend a lot of his time in Japan, with Tokyo bay seemingly his "home base" so to speak. When my unit was scouting the ruins of Tokyo we got to see him rise from the bay. It was a miraculous sight, despite the danger we were in by simply being in his presence. I'm going to continue to keep tabs on Godzilla. We are in the process of establishing a network and radar, which will hopefully make it easier to track his movements. Until then, I'll continue to update this journal as I go.

Signing off

Love it, and love the world building.

Any plans to expand this, or is this a one off?

I fully plan to do a number of other kaiju, with a basic story to go alongside it. Ive got a lot of the details lore wise planned out. This is supposed to be a simpler project than my webcomic so its nothing crazy lore wise.

EDIT: Added the atomic breath headshot to the original image
Image

Another little addon, for no reason other than to document my process. The original image was drawn on paper and colored with markers, and was then adjusted digitally quite a bit. The thing with markers is that its often hard to get the exact colors I want so I do end up adjusting them after the fact. The original drawing was MUCH brighter with higher saturation, so I figured Id post that here for fun.

Theres a part of me that actually likes the brighter colors but it doesnt quite fit my vision.
