I can only speak to my own experience but not at all. The most common point of feedback for GvK I heard was that it was an improvement on GKOTM and that GvK was a great film or at least a lot of fun, this was pretty much a universal experience for me until late last year, and I only saw a couple negative opinions of it earlier this year around GxK's release. It feels like news to me anyone could despise it in spite of those two people before now because otherwise it was all positivity.

I had a negative opinion of the film on release but I grew up lol
I used to be a lot more optimistic and outgoing, believe it or not. I used to actually be passionate about this stuff.

I don't think it's even close. Final Wars still has to be the most divisive film in the franchise, even if discourse about it has largely died off since the advent of the MonsterVerse. Depending on who you ask, GFW is either "maximum epicness," the absolute worst thing to happen to this franchise, or so bad it's good. I can't speak to what you've seen, but I've only encountered a very small number of people who truly hate GvK. Even among the MV, KOTM seems to be much more divisive; that's the one I generally see people either love or hate. In my experience, responses to GvK generally range from "it was mid" to "it was pretty damn good."
I agree with pretty much everything said here. Both sides of GxK for the most part either have really good reasons why they didn't like it or they say they like it but admit it has problems. G vs K ranges from ok to good and kotm devolves into box office debates.

FW however can start a war in the fandom now.
I always wonder what makes Godzilla Final Wars (2004) such a divided film in the fanbase just out of pure curiosity.

It could in 2005. I don't think that's true now.

There's also G98. I actually think it's more divisive now, since in 1998 we didn't have an entire generation who were introduced to Godzilla by it, have their nostalgia goggles on and now come to its defense.

I had a good time in theaters with it, but I grew a little disappointed with it over time. However, GxK completely changed things for me. I clicked with what Wingard was doing and it made me retroactively like GvK a lot more.

I think the general audience probably likes GvK the most oddly enough. But there is a very vocal and angry group of fans who absolutely hate what Wingard was doing and they’re unfortunately louder than everyone else.

I don't want to sound like a jerk while saying this, but I have never seen an actual good explanation anywhere on what makes Godzilla (1998) a Good Film. I feel like most of the time the reasons come from either nostalgia or saying it's just "Entertaining" Can it be entertaining, sure but just because a film is entertaining isn't a good reason on what make's Godzilla (1998) a Good Film.

Two main things.
1: It has an over-the-top style unlike anything else in the series and one that it insists upon in every moment, for better or for worse.
2: It was Godzilla's 50th Anniversary film, and thus had lofty expectations forced upon it. It was never going to please everyone and that edgy style made it all the more divisive.

As far as specific things the fans are divided on...
- Its style is either memorable and fun or gratingly obnoxious.
- GFW is either a fun Showa throwback or a dumb Hollywood wannabe.
- All the Showa kaiju returning was either cool fanservice or a waste due to said kaiju's general lack of screentime.
- The fast-paced kaiju fights are either fun and unique or lame and repetitive.
- It's either a bold departure from the general style of the series or so far removed that it doesn't feel like a true Godzilla movie.

I could go on, but I think these are some of the main points of contention.
The wisest words ever spoken on TK: "When I Saw The Showa Movie's white My Friend's They seid WTF is This Your showing Me to Men Fighting In suit's they found At party city Butt when I Showed Them The Heisei film's they thoght They where pritty fun To Watch"

So ugh, just want to throw this question out there.

Is this anyone else’s favorite MV film?

No. Sadly, a poll was conducted, and experts found that no other fans list this as their favorite Monsterverse film.

I’ll bite, it’s mine. Having watched through good portions of most of the MV films recently, I kinda realized I like this movie a decent bit more than GxK, despite originally thinking otherwise. The action is incredible in GvK, and I ended up being more down with the human story this go around.

To be honest, my initial post was a little hyperbolic. I just wanted to see if others appreciate the film too.

I’d say my current ranking probably mirrors yours, at least your top two.

GKOTM
GvK
G 2014 (took a huge nose dive this year for me, I still love it though and it continues to be in my top 10 G films)
KSI
*Pacific Rim*
GxK (ironically this is the one I had the most fun with in theaters. Again, I still love it. It’s just a bit of an empty viewing experience when Kong isn’t on the screen)

I think Godzilla vs. Kong might have my favorite opening in a Monsterverse movie. The day in a life of Kong, the reveal of the containment dome, and then the banger opening credits (especially the title drop). It’s just really well done imo, I’m interested to see if the Monsterverse can top it for me.

Handsome Shrek wrote: Wed Mar 31, 2021 5:33 pm The entire climax was a goddamn mess. That's part of the problem. MechaGodzilla should never have been in the movie at all. Instead we have Godzilla, who stood up handedly to Ghidorah, never landing a single goddamn hit on MG after not even getting necessarily exhausted from his fight with Kong. MechaGodzilla only existed in this movie because they needed to give Godzilla a reason to act *gasp* antagonistic and allow Godzilla and Kong to team up.

I can't believe people are acting like this movie is infinitely better than KotM.... Everybody's entitled to their own opinions, but damn. I thought there were some exciting moments, but I just don't understand
I agree completely, but Godzilla :godzilla2021: :godzilla2021blue: has been on empty for 3 years. He fought an entire fleet, destroyed a facility, went and fought Kong and took a depth charge/s to the head, swam to Hong Kong, drilled 1000+ miles in 2 minutes and 58 seconds, fought Kong twice, took an axe to the leg, and THEN fought a fully charged Mechagodzilla. Adam Wingard himself said if he wasn´t tired, and was charged up when he fought mecha, he would´ve mid diffed him. Including the Beam Clash. Did you know, when he charged up for the HE Drill he almost went thermo from the amount of energy he used? I did some math, it took 7.7 QUINTILLION JOULES of energy to drill so much so fast. That´s over a billion tons of TNT. And all this while, he´s had to keep the other titans in check for 3 years. He has every right for a villain arc. Kong? I swear this movie should be named Kong Beats the Bad Guys; Godzilla helps. He finds a home, gets an axe that absorbs atomic breath, gets saved by the Navy from death by radioactive creature, gets more rest, then almost dies, but gets rebooted by humans, then gets the kill. He would´ve died 3 times if it weren´t for humans and Godzilla. :godzilla2021blue:
