To answer your question: I know the anime trilogy gets a lot of hate here, but I have never really related to the ire they received. Could the animation be better? Sure, but tbh I was quite surprised how much the colors popped when I watched them on my brand new TV.

I find City on the Edge of Battle to be the best film out of the trilogy. I enjoy the philosophical ideas presented in this one the most, the intrigue of the human's unease with Mechagodzilla city and the Bilusaludo's embrace of it and I think it had the best climax of the 3 films.

I find the hate towards the anime trilogy to be hyperbolic. The most negative I feel towards them is sometimes feeling bored during Planet of Monsters and that that film has significantly less interesting ideas than the 2 that follow.

It is pretty hard for me to rank all of these films and sometimes it feels like choosing my favorite child. Some are obviously worse than others (like a choice between Final Wars and GMK) but there are some that are some pretty close calls. My opinions of these films often change with time too. I used to not really like Megalon, but now it clicks with me more now and I can have fun with it. Others, like Terror of Mechagodzilla (which I used to consider my favorite G film) have not been as good to me recently as they once were. So this list is definitely not set in stone.
In the case of your list all I meant by "different" was that I don't usually see any of the anime trilogy so high up someone's list. Just thought that was interesting.

But thanks for answering! I can understand being interested in the ideas the movie plays with. The clash of cultures and value systems between the different races and how an alliance can break down pretty quickly under certain conditions. The anime trilogy has never really clicked for me, so I was just really interested in hearing your thoughts as someone that enjoyed City on the Edge of Battle.

I definitely feel you on your last point. It can be pretty difficult ranking them. I have to use a preference ranker to get mine down outside of my top 5 or among my least favorites. Things shift around in the middle for me every once in a while.

I'm going to bump this, as I think it's worth it to revaluate how they feel about individual entries in the franchises going into GXK and reflecting more on how they feel on Minus One and Legacy of Monarch.

Explanations:
-Note that for the S+ and S tiers, the order is irrelevant and changes depending on my mood.

-The Kino tier are all movies that I think are legitimately fantastic works of art and film. I can provide specific examples and explanations, but all of them accomplish their "goals", have interesting premises and stylistic choices and elements, have something to say, and most importantly are entertaining. The big difference between the Kino (S+ tier) and lower S tier is that I think anyone (who isn't suffering from brainrot) can enjoy and find value in the S-tier films if they approach it with an open mind. I understand why S tier and below might be only interesting for genre enthusiasts.

-I imagine that the B- tier will be controversial. However, don't view AMA being on the same tier as KOTM (2019) as a slight towards that movie or anything else on the tier as I enjoy it. All Monster's Attack may be elevated upwards in the future, but only because I only very recently started to appreciate things.

-D tier is when my enjoyment completely ends. For the record, I "like" everything in the C tier and can enjoy it when the time is right. I included the pain/scam tier to showcase that there's a lot worse movies that are "deserving of hate" than the usual suspects.

-Tiers aren't representative on my thoughts on lead monsters or specific ideas within the film. For example, Jet Jaguar is very high on my favorite monsters, but the movie he is in is pretty low.

-TV shows are sort of based on the overall average in my mind. SP has some S-tier moments and episodes, but is consistently where it is.

-I've also included some non-Godzilla stuff as sort of guideposts. My point in doing so is that while acknowledging that while films like G1998 don't particularly mesh well with me, I think that they still show talent and ideas on the big screen.

Image

Observations: I feel pretty positive about the Godzilla series overall. Even in the ones in the lower tiers, I always find something fascinating to think about, either in the films final product or conceptual stages. Although a lot of people use the "turn off your brain and don't think" I sincerely believe that some of the lower tiered Godzilla movies still leave you with something to consider or think about, and have a lot of artistic intent in contrast to recent cookie-cutter films; I hate to beat a dead horse, but a lot of modern action-blockbusters of the past few decades would be in the D/C tier. To date, I don't think there's been a single Godzilla film that is lacking in artistic integrity or ideas at some level.

This is a great tier list. I appreciate that you shared your rationale for how you ranked different tiers and I agree with a lot of your rankings. Would you mind sharing a link to the tiermaker you used for this? It's a solid selection of "Godzilla-adjacent" movies and shows, so I want to give it a try.

I'd love to share it, but I manually added and uploaded all the images to tiermaker without making an account. As a result it wasn't saved and I can't share it.

It took some time but I'm crazy. :pelops2:

I actually think The Giant Claw is an above-average 50s B with two pretty likable leads that's hampered by possibly the goofiest monster in film history. But that then gives the movie a "so bad it's good" quality. That said, I wouldn't consider it a Kaiju film.

Anyways, via a preference revealer, here's my latest ranking of all the Godzilla films:

Godzilla
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Hedorah
Son of Godzilla
King Kong vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante
The Return of Godzilla
Godzilla Minus One
Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster
Monster Zero
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Destroy All Monsters
Shin Godzilla
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Final Wars
Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla's Revenge
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla (2014)
Godzilla vs. Destroyah
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla (1998)
Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S
Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla
Godzilla vs. Kong
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla: The Planet Eater
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle

A little shocked to see Minus One so high, even if I really enjoyed it.

We really need reactions in this forum so I can "like" a bunch of these great lists.

For me I tend to stick with a Top 15 only because as we get to the remaining films I never can quantify their place past the entries that I really care about. That said, my top one has changed. Initially I had Shin as number 1, but I just love Shin and Minus One equally too much that I feel pretty good with them tied. I feel like once Minus One comes to DVD, if I watch either Shin or MO, I'll feel compelled to pop in the other one.

1) tie- Shin Godzilla
1) tie- Godzilla Minus One
3) Godzilla 54
4) Godzilla vs Biollante
5) Godzilla KOTM
6) Godzilla 2014
7) Godzilla vs Destoroyah
8) Return of Godzilla
9) GMK
10) Mothra vs Godzilla
11) Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
12) Godzilla vs Kong
13) Ebirah
14) Godzilla vs Mothra
15) Godzilla vs Hedorah

  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
My favorites tier is my top 15 favorite Godzilla movies and my favorite Godzilla TV series. My top four have remained the same for most of my life but the sequence of everything after that is more fluid. I like Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah about the same, and then I like Hedorah, GT3HM and G2K about the same, and then I like Son, MvsG and Sea Monster about the same, and then I like the last four about the same. I became a Godzilla fan when I saw the 1998 TriStar film in theaters as a kid, so that's always been the dividing line from my perspective: everything Showa or Heisei already existed and I discovered it after I became a fan, while I've experienced everything since 1998 as something new. By the time G2K was released in the US, I already regarded a bunch of Godzilla movies as favorites and that included most of the same Showa flicks that I consider favorites today. GT3HM is a movie that I just sort of liked as a kid but it rocketed up to one of my favorites as I got older. None of my favorite Showa Godzilla movies from my childhood have fallen off my favorites tier over time, so my favorites still lean heavily Showa. My favorite Heisei movies as a kid were King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla but only the former has held up as a favorite to this day. I considered each of the Millennium Series films to be new favorites when I first saw them but the ones that have remained my favorites over time are G2K, GMK and GFW. Although I really like all of the new Godzilla movies and shows since the 2014 revival, the only ones that have broken into my favorites list so far are Minus One and Singular Point.

My awesome tier is all of the other Godzilla movies and shows that I really like, more than most other movies and shows in the world because I'm biased as a lifelong Godzilla fan. These are Godzilla movies and shows that I can watch pretty much anytime, and the only reason they're not grouped with my favorites is because having 32 favorites would just dilute the meaning of it. Biollante, King Kong vs. Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters were movies that I just sort of liked as a kid but now I think they're all awesome. Megalon, G'84 and Destroyer have always been awesome to me. I think all of Legendary's Godzilla productions are awesome, with G'14 still being the one I like the most, and I think Shin Godzilla is even more awesome. I think the anime film trilogy is awesome and I like each of those sequels more than its predecessor. Godzilla: The Series was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid and I still think it's awesome.

My fun tier is everything else, down to the ones I like the least. The only Godzilla movie that I genuinely didn't like as a kid was Spacegodzilla, and then I sure did have fun picking apart a lot of the movies in this tier when I was an oh-so-media-savvy teenager looking for things to criticize online, but I've mellowed out on all of them in my adult years. I like reading books and articles about how these movies were made, even the ones at the bottom of my list, so of course I can have fun actually watching them if I'm in the right mood for them. Godzilla Raids Again has its issues but I like it more than everything else in this tier. Godzilla vs. Mothra is poorly written and derivative but I like it. The Kiryu movies really aren't good but they're fun, short and full of fan service. Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla isn't great, even by '70s cartoon standards, but I still like watching it from time to time and I really liked watching it on Cartoon Network as a kid. All Monsters Attack is a creative story that's weighed down by its excessive use of wholesale stock footage sequences. GvsMG'93 was my favorite Godzilla movie as an impressionable '90s kid but it didn't hold up as I got older, and the same goes for the 1998 TriStar film that made me a fan in the first place. I first saw clips of several of the Godzilla, Ghidorah and Gigan scenes from Zone Fighter as a teen but I didn't actually watch the series until 2020 when the episodes were fansubbed, and I'd say it's second only to Gridman as the worst tokusatsu series I've ever seen. Spacegodzilla and Megaguirus are interchangeable as my bottom two Godzilla movies.

Thought I'd revise my rankings, and with that, a Tier List!

- This is based on just how much I like/enjoy them, in no way is it meant to be objective.
- Within tiers, leftmost is higher ranked.

B and up are what I tend to feel the urge to rewatch. I weighed them according to my sense of their construction as films, their value specifically as Godzilla films, and personal appreciation factors. :pelops2:

"[GxK] feels like a proof of concept for Legendary to make a film entirely by AI. Monster fights are the one thing it offers and it fucks them mostly too, every other aspect of the film is dogshit and it seems to genuinely mock its audience for watching it."
