Although Ghidorah only has three heads, he's a good stand in for Orochi.

"Hero" Ghidorah has always worked pretty well for me. As much as I love the mental Showa incarnation, his design lends itself well to a majestic guardian being.

A problem I have with GMKs plot is why do the guardian monsters or spirits care about Godzilla at all? Sure he destroys wildlife and the environment around him, but that's all accidentally. Godzilla's goal is clearly and explicitly to target humanity and not nature. So why do the spirits care what happens to humanity?

I guess it’s more about maintaining some sort of equilibrium….Godzilla represents something that throws balance and order out of wack.
Or something.
You’re not wrong in viewing this as something not super well established. It’s not enough to ruin the movie for me personally but to each their own.

Godzilla being unnatural and plainly malevolent probably sends up a lot of red flags. Even if he is just targeting humanity, he comes across as a dangerous trespasser that threatens everything.

The angry spirits inside Godzilla are likely what caused the guardians to wake. As Jag said, this Godzilla was unnatural.
