I'm not getting my hopes up for a direct sequel, not after 17 years of waiting plus getting hyped for two films that barely had anything to do with the original.

Yeah, you know what, you’re right.

I don’t know why anyone should feel excited for these things: the original Cloverfield was a standalone masterpiece. It requires no explanation or further elaboration, and any attempts to provide “answers” or clarity, will only diminish its value. It was an amazing product of its time, and you had to be around to really understand the mystery and hype leading up to the film. There’s no way they’ll be able to replicate that.

10 Cloverfield Lane? Amazing movie; would’ve been better if the ending was a bit more ambiguous, or at the very least ended without the action sequence. However, it was very obviously a stand alone movie and could’ve been fine being named anything.

They had potential to either strike while the iron was hot, and follow-up Cloverfield closer to the original, or keep it as a consistently good anthology series. Cloverfield Paradox fucked it all up, and this idea of returning to a sequel, that seems to be stuck in development hell, is lame.

I’ll be excited, sure, but I’ll also have tempered expectations.

Cloverfield will always be an incredibly important movie to me and one that I love deeply. While I DO credit Cloverfield as being vital to the revival of the kaiju film that we're living in now I'm not sure that a sequel at this point would go over as well. Do I want it? Absolutely. However the "franchise" is in a particularly rough state. 10 Cloverfield Lane was a fantastic movie but it was in no way, shape, or form a CLOVERFIELD movie. The easter eggs in the film that "connected" it to the original are the same kind of easter eggs in Super 8 or Star Trek and no one called those Cloverfield movies. Cloverfield Paradox was obviously another unrelated script which got the Cloverfield name slapped onto it. Although they did attempt to make it a proper Cloverfield film by attaching Clover to the film, the story of the movie completely contradicts the events in the 2008 film and it's viral marketing. Neither of these films were acceptable substitutions for a proper Cloverfield sequel. What PAINS me so much is that despite the obvious problems with taking an original script and forcing it into a Cloverfield "sequel", there actually WAS one script which a part of me DESPERATELY wishes had been co-opted by Bad Robot and reperposed into a Cloverfield prequel. The very last theatrical release by 20th Century Fox Underwater, would have made for an absolutely PERFECT prequel to Cloverfield and infact I consider it to be a spiritual prequel to Cloverfield in the same manner I consider The VVitch to be a prequel to The Blair Witch Project.

Abrams stated that he wanted America to have our own Godzilla and while I do believe Cloverfield is America's own version of the 1954 film Gojira, for Clover to reach the same cultural appeal as Godzilla he needed to have had more apperances in all forms of media such as comics, video games, and toys. I love that Abrams wanted to be sure they had a story worth telling with a Cloverfield 2 but I think he kept waiting for a story idea which would have been as revolutionary as the first film which is an unlikely prospect. I don't think a standard sequel to Cloverfield would have been as bad of an approach as Abrams seemed to believe it would have been. Personally I would have made a sequel composed of footage from the helmet cameras of all the military forces engaged with Clover during the events of the first film (exactly how [rec] 2 was done). Take the Aliens approach to the sequel. In conclusion, thank you for reading my TED Talk.
