The Adventures of Chatran (1986)

Also known as The Adventures of Milo and Otis, this 1986 movie was a staple for a whole generation of children around the world. Unfortunately beneath the cute and fuzzy exterior, lay a thinly-vieled dark secret. Allegedly, during filming many animals were tragically abused and even killed due to lax animal protection laws. The scandal left a bad taste in the mouths of many who grew up watching the film. While very unfortunate, it has piqued my interest as of late and while re-watching it, I thought start a thread. Has your perception of the film been tainted?
If so, that's understandable. What could've gone through the director's head to think it was worth putting the animals in mortal danger realize his vision?

It's so weird to see a movie like this come up in its own thread in the "Heisei series" subforum.

How would you powerscale these two against the Toho monsters? That's the real question.

That's because this movie was distributed by Toho, so it's close enough.

A cat was unharmed by Hedorah's sludge, so cats would be immune to that.

To be serious, I've never seen this one. I did watch Homeward Bound years ago, but I might take a look at this one.
Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.

We're all part monster in our subconscious. So we have laws and religion.

I think we've had multiple discussions in passing that claims made against the movie are dubious at best. Not saying it didn't happen, but there's actually no proof/evidence that any of this ever happened. From what I can tell, it may have started as a "some animal rights groups/welfare groups had some concerns" snowballing into "hundreds of animals killed" via internet sensationalism and early internet outrage. I bolded/italicized your point because not only is there no evidence to pass, but Japan passed some animal welfare laws about a decade prior to the films shooting.

Snopes has its own issues, but while searching up the controversy I found this, which neatly summarizes the supposed controversy:
