As far as I know, no one who likes the US version considers the Japanese version to be bad, but rather that it's just not as good as the US version.
The most common criticism of the Japanese version, and correspondingly praise for the American version, seems to be the pacing. I enjoy both versions. The American version has some of the best "dub moments" in the series IMO.

I don't mind the Zilla roar being used; I'm just glad this one looks and acts like Godzilla.

In the US version? The Japanese version sounds like it should.

This was my first true Godzilla movie that I ever owned (I had 1998, but that's not true Godzilla). Godzilla 2000 is my favorite Toho design and my favorite Toho Godzilla (I lump the American designs differently from the Japanese designs)

I HATE dubbing so much, and my DVD only has options for English and French. So I just watch it in French because I can't stand dubbing lol

Top five favorite Monsterverse titans:

1. Godzilla and King Ghidorah equally
2. Methuselah
3. Mecha-Godzilla
4. Doug

Honorable mentions: Tiamat

The countless ripoffs from G98 are amusing to say the least, but this concept art takes the cake:

This and the recent GMK stuff makes me believe there was a time period during the early millennium era where Toho was probably trying to be more inclusive of the 1998 design in the overall franchise. I see the similarities, but also a lot of clear differences.

It's not about being inclusive as much as taking something from the last iteration.
G98 took from G54 up to (presumably) Destroy All Monsters (1968 is a year often referenced in supplemental G98 material). G14 lifts from G98, Shin takes and subverts from both (!) and Minus One does the same but after GvK, and lo and behold, a lot of very similar shots. There is no Kong in the battleship fight scene, but a lot of the shots are almost the same as the first KKvG fight. Minus One's glowing piston plates start charging up from the tail, and I needn't say anything here!

This is a similar case: in G2K, we open with a family being chased by Godzilla (with shots similar to the G98 taxi chase: Godzilla reaching out for the car with his claws, Godzilla stomping through everything as the car speeds up), then we see Godzilla swimming (in a shot that almost replicates G98 swimming past camera before she leads the torpedo to the submarine) and then we see Orga, which is literally supposed to be imbued with G98 elements (the "imitator that wants to swallow the original..."). GxM and GMK reference G98 similarly, mostly from swimming shots. Matter of fact, if it weren't for G98, we would still just have Godzilla "walking on the sea floor" as per series tradition (or perhaps Edwards would've come up with it), and if it weren't for the Elliott/Rossio script and the Delgado storyboards we wouldn't have that lizardy swimming in G98, either.

That concept art is from a phase where the art team thought, what if we imbued some stuff from the previous design? Which is what always happens on these productions. I think it is a mistake to attribute good or bad feelings from Toho towards the movie... they only care if something is marketable and profitable!

RIP Michael Schlesinger, producer of the US version of Godzilla 2000, and executive at Sony that kept many classic Columbia Pictures films available for theatrical screenings. His humor, graciousness, and generosity with his knowledge won't be forgotten by any, even those who only knew him through email or forum correspondence.

My respects to Schlesinger.

As for the above art, there is a little bit of Minus 1 Godzilla in the stance.

Question: was he related to Leon Schlesinger, who was an executive at Warner Bros. during the 1930s and 1940s and even appeared in a live action / animation combo Porky Pig and Daffy Duck black and white cartoon titled ''You Ought To Be In Pictures" (1940)?

Honestly didn't mind it until I saw the frontal view. Seems like an inferior version of the Nirasawa GFW concept.
