GMK - Revised and Accurate English subtitles for Blu-ray!
I wasn't sure where was the appropriate place to announce this, so I'm posting it here. If this is the wrong place for it, please, kindly redirect me.
I'm proud to announce and make available a project that I have worked on with Zarm of the Toho Kingdom message boards here. You may be familiar with the Zone Fighter complete series fansub project that he spearheaded several years ago. As the subject title states, this is a much more accurate English subtitle translation for the 2001 Millennium Series movie "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" (a.k.a. GMK), directed by Shusuke Kaneko of the 90's Heisei Gamera Trilogy.
As I'm sure some of you are aware, GMK has had a very dubious history when it came to English subtitle translations for its home media releases catered to the English speaking market. For example, the official North American DVD and Blu-ray releases from Sony featured what were essentially "dubtitles," that is an English subtitle script that is less an accurate translation of the original Japanese audio dialog and more a transcription of the somewhat loosely translated English dubbed audio with only a few differences here and there. There was a 2003 Region 3 DVD released in Hong Kong under the label Universe Laser that featured English subtitles that were technically an accurate translation of the Japanese script. However, the mentioned translation and subtitle script were extremely minimal, lacking any kind of detail, nuance, or character and personality. It was as basic as a translation could get.
Considering GMK is both mine and Zarm's favorite in the Millennium Series of the Godzilla movies, this was a frustration that both of us had to endure for twenty years. In my case especially, I recall one of the first ever fansub scripts made for GMK in 2002 that had long since disappeared. It was the only script I'd ever seen or read that had any level of nuance and detail that actually tried to properly convey the details and character of the Japanese script. Sadly, almost twenty years ago, I lost track of the video I originally found those subtitles on. Zarm and I agreed that GMK deserved a subtitle script that properly did the movie justice, especially since there were so many details in the original script that were so esoterically Japanese that they became lost in the numerous official English translations.
As for how this translation came about, this was another project spearheaded by Zarm whom acquired the help of several translators as well as using numerous translation software for the purposes of double-checking. The original material the translation was sourced from was a combination of both the Japanese subtitles from the Toho Blu-ray as well as the Japanese subtitles from the streaming version on Netflix Japan. After Zarm had gathered all of his translated materials, I came onto the project as essentially an editor, cleaning up lines that we both thought for various reasons needed work, whether they needed better timing, more concise readings, etc.
In this subtitle package, I've included two sets of files. One set is a pair of .SRT files which can be used for either loading into a video player software such as VLC Media Player or for potentially reformatting the subtitles at your own discretion. The other set is a pair of Blu-ray .SUP files which can be attached to/muxed into the video file of your choice for creating/writing/burning a Blu-ray disc. These .SUP files will also work just as well as a subtitle option for a video file to be viewed on your desktop, laptop, or other device using video player software such as VLC. I should also state that one pair of .SRT and .SUP files is timed for use with the Japanese Toho Blu-ray. The other pair is timed for use with the North American Sony Blu-ray.
While I have included the two .SRT files, I feel I should also state that the Blu-ray .SUP files are what Zarm and I originally envisioned and intended for this project. The Blu-ray English subtitles featured here were very, very carefully timed, visually grouped, and styled in a way that we felt best suited both this particular translation as well as being able to be comfortably read at a reasonably leisure reading speed. It is my hope that we've written these subs in a manner that's both detailed as well as giving the audience enough time to read everything without having to pause or rewind the movie. If you wish to reformat these subtitles into a style that better suits your needs with whatever subtitling software you prefer, the .SRT files are available to you for that purpose. However, the Blu-ray .SUP files in this package are mine and Zarm's preferred presentation of this revised translation. It's also worthy to note that the Japanese Toho Blu-ray is the optimal video source for using our particular subs. The North American Sony Blu-ray is perfectly viable as I've tested these subs myself with that release, but the original Japanese text credits and on-screen captions much more visually compliment our subs since we were keeping those in mind for our more accurate translations.
I've included both a READ ME file and an image file that will instruct you on how to utilize these files with whatever video source you are using, either the Japanese Toho Blu-ray or the North American Sony Blu-ray or whatever other source.
If you're interested and would like this subtitle package, please private message me, and I'll message you a download link.
Update: So unless I'm mistaken somehow, apparently the Toho Kingdom message board forums now have a policy where you cannot send private messages to someone unless you've made a lot of posts? I'm not sure how much "a lot" is supposed to be specifically, but I guess it means that if you're interested and would like this subtitle package, please make a request reply in this thread, and I'll private message you a download link. As far as I know, I'm able to send private messages without problems.

Hi! I'm sorry for the delayed response. I only just noticed this post now. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't been visiting the Toho Kingdom message boards as frequently as I used to. Even more unfortunately, I just learned that I can't even send a private message to you, because you apparently don't have permission yet to read private messages. I'm really not sure why this policy exists. Is there another venue through which I can contact you and be able to privately provide you a link?

I'm also interested in this! What would be your preferred venue for a private message since you said private messages do not seem to work here?

Hello!
I came across your post when looking into the GMK "dubtitles." I am also interested in your subtitle package, but I'm afraid I've never used twitter. I did make an account, but when I try and send you a message it just says "@Shokara0001 can't be messaged." Would you be able to dm me about it on twitter @argg117?
Thank you!

Hmm, not sure why you couldn't find me. I double checked and that is my handle.
I tried to message again, but to be "verified" I think means to have a blue checkmark. I have dm settings sent to receive messages from "everyone." I also followed you on twitter so that you could look for me in your followers.
Thanks for posting in reply to mine so quickly!

Hey, could I trouble you with a download request for these subtitle files? The prospect of having more accurate subtitles for this movie is too exciting to pass up!

Since I apparently cannot private message you on this message board, message me on X/Twitter, and I can help you out there.

Hello. Like the others here, I'm also really interested in these subtitles. I don't have Twitter/X, is there another way I can reach you? Would you be willing to upload these to archive dot org or some other file sharing site?Shokara wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 2:33 pm Update: So unless I'm mistaken somehow, apparently the Toho Kingdom message board forums now have a policy where you cannot send private messages to someone unless you've made a lot of posts? TK should really have a download site for fan projects like this.

Sorry about the delayed response. I only caught this message today. I don't really have the means or the knowhow to upload to the venues that you mentioned, unfortunately. I tend to share with people directly on a case by case basis. However, if you have Discord, you can try to contact me there through private messaging. Tried and couldn't find you, I think I found you on Steam though and sent you an invite there. Re: GMK - Revised and Accurate English subtitles for Blu-ray!
For anyone that has tried and failed to find me on Discord, I apologize as I just realized I made a big goof. While my "Display Name" on Discord is indeed Shokara0001, my "Username" reads as just Shokara. So anyone that's been trying to find me on Discord, try using simply Shokara instead, no numbers.
Update: I forgot to mention that if you are going to reach out to me on Discord, please announce that you are going to do so in this thread first with the Discord Username that I should expect to see. Otherwise, I won't know if I'm being reached out to by some random person or bot, and I might ignore it.
