It's cool that this book is being localized the same way the Yuji Kaida book was.
But it would be so much cooler if a book on the FILMS got some sort of American localization. But based on everything I know about Toho - and if the Ultimate Visual Guide is any indication - that's never going to happen.

Oh this is AMAZING news. Hoping this, the Yuji Kaida book, and the recent G54/GRA novelization translations lead to more Japanese books seeing release over here.

Well, for a book like the Ishiro Honda biography or Norman England's set diaries you don't necessarily need Toho approval except for photos (hence England posting all the bts pics he couldn't include in print). Does Toho need to approve, say, an English version of Kenpachiro Satsuma's memoirs?Legion1979 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 2:26 pm But it would be so much cooler if a book on the FILMS got some sort of American localization. I'm hoping visual guides, books of production art, poster books... any coffee table style book would be nice. Even with sparse written content there can be good info. History of Formative Arts gave me a far better idea if how the suits were built and repaired.

See this is the kind of stuff I've always wished Toho would port internationally. We got enough books about the films themselves we need more kaiju centric books. Great we're finally getting one released domestically, even if it's just a translation of a previous Japanese release. Still holding out hope for the Making of Shin Godzilla book to be translated some day.

The Shin Art Book is probably my most wanted, too. Honestly, if they were allowed to combine and edit a few different books together you could do 'Complete Works' volumes for Showa, Heisei, and Millenium. I'd love that.Tyrant_Lizard_King wrote: ↑Wed Jan 17, 2024 9:22 pm See this is the kind of stuff I've always wished Toho would port internationally. Agreed...while I was initially disappointed that this wasn't going to be a kaiju "cutaway" book as I've always found those types of books a guilty pleasure, Shinji Nishikawa is one of my favorite G artists (Japanese or Western...no disrespect to Yuji Kaida as he's great as well), and will gobble the English version of this up the very second it's released.GigaBowserG wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 8:33 am Oh snap, an actual English translation?! I would love to see something along the lines of the fantastic Shogakukan Super Complete Works series or the current Hobby Lobby Perfection/Completion series released in English over here as opposed to the rather hallow, toothless Illustrated Guide to Godzilla we got instead. Also seeing all of the terrific non-G TOHO tokusatsu films covered in English (Mysteriens, Varan, Dogora, Atragon, Human Vapor, FCTW, WOTG, KKE, Yog, etc. etc. etc.) would be great to see.Legion1979 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 2:26 pm It's cool that this book is being localized the same way the Yuji Kaida book was.

Checked Amazon and the temporary cover with its word salad text has been replaced by a more final looking cover with the new title - "Godzilla: The Encyclopedia"

I see the English version is unfortunately no longer illustrated by Godzilla himself, sad.
Seriously though, this is so cool! I'm amazed this somehow slipped under my radar until now. I love reference books like this.

So Godzilla 98, Zilla, and Legendary Goji aren't discussed in the book?

Really excited to order this next week. As someone who loved the monster gallery at the end of the Official Godzilla Compendium this is like a dream come true for me.

Oh WOW
Many years ago when I was doing my watchthrough of all the films for the second time I had a little notebook where I did little doodles of each new suit and took design notes. This is EXTREMELY for me.

Re: Godzilla Great Anatomical Picture Book - Shinji Nishikawa
Got my copy in today and read up to the first Mechagodzilla section.
Unfortunately, a vast majority of the text appears to be machine-translated or just poorly translated. Sentences are very awkwardly phrased and there’s more than a few errors I’ve noticed that could easily have been identified and corrected (one bit that mentions Ultraman calls it “a Toho film series”). There are English translation credits in the back of the book so maybe my machine-translation fears are misguided, but even so the text in this book sits barely above passable.
However, let’s be honest: you’re not buying this for the text descriptions. Aside from those hiccups, the art is incredible and the chibi doodles scattered throughout are a treat. I definitely don’t regret the purchase, but be mindful going in that this is a visuals-first book before anything.

Re: Godzilla Great Anatomical Picture Book - Shinji Nishikawa
Just got mine, and to add to the above, I don't think it's been machine translated personally - or if it has, enough proofreading has been done to hide it. But no, it is not translated well in either case. It's serviceable though, and yeah, the point of the book (the illustrations) isn't really hurt by it. It's pretty thorough! I really appreciate full illustrations comparing the 1984 suit and cybot, for example. Great reference material if you're an artist like me
also huge shoutouts to Amazon for wrinkling the hell out of the bottom of the jacket in shipping; A+ work guys

The top part of my jacket was messed up. Otherwise I really like what I'm seeing. Only qualm is I wish it could have been hardcover but it's not that big of a deal.
