Comprehensive Guide to Cities Featured in Toho films

Post by LegendZilla »

Today I want to do something a little different than usual. As the title suggests, I want to start a thread dedicated to keeping track of how many times each city (whether in Japan or elsewhere) has been featured in a Toho science-fiction film (Kaiju or otherwise). I have seen other people do this elsewhere on the internet, albeit with chunks of erroneous information.

Re: Cities featured in Toho films

^The big issue is that it's a mistake to lump Tokyo as one city. It is and it isn't, and there's a propensity for non-Japanese/Western audiences/tourists to label it as one big thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo

Each of these wards might as well be there own city, each with their own landmarks and distinctive flavors. You say "Shinigawa" is a suburb of Tokyo when it's just as much of Tokyo as Shinjuku. Time is also a factor here. Some of the areas of Tokyo are much newer and were only built up recently.

Your bias of classification of "city" is also going to play a role here:

A lot of minor cities and locales are also featured "Nemuro" (Godzilla 2000):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemuro,_Hokkaido
and most likely Yamanashi City/Kofu in Godzilla Final Wars:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamanashi,_Yamanashi
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C5%8Dfu

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... Prefecture

But these will go unrecognized and unreported because they don't sound as fancy as "Tokyo".

...yes?

Surprised you didn't include Sapporo and Hiroshima in your listings either.

I did include Hiroshima, also, I was on my way to add Sapporo to the list as stated.

I'm also pretty sure All Monsters Attack takes place in Kawasaki, although for other reasons I'd like to confirm that.

We just might have to seek confirmation from Toho themselves to confirm such an assessment. Also, is lake Ashino within Hakone?

So are we talking cities, lakes, or towns now?

I'm just asking if Ashino being featured is a reason to add Hakone to the list.

Great thread idea. I'm surprised we haven't already had one of these. I suggest we change the title to something like "Guide to Locations" so we can branch out to towns, lakes, mountains, islands, etc. This is an informative project that can give context to the movies and teach us about Japanese geography in general.

Good idea, but it's not up to me to make such a change.

You could just edit the title of the thread, no?

According to Wikipedia, part of ROM 3 takes place in Nagoya, being the city attacked by Ghidorah in the film. Can anyone clarify? I've only seen the movie once ten years ago.

*edit*

According to Wikizilla, Godzilla briefly passes through Nagoya in GvSG.
