Re: Unpopular Opinion Thread
You know if this was 15-20 years I'd be all over Prehistoric Planet, I loved the Walking With series, but honestly I'm just not that interested. Glad to see someone attempting this kind of production again but I find the luster has kinda worn off because it's already been done before, and done really well.

Re: Unpopular Opinion Thread
That's the thing, though, is that the Walking With series was 20 years ago. Paleontology has learned A LOT in that time, and our image of how prehistoric animals looked and behaved has changed in some drastic ways. Walking With is outdated and infamously had some problematic accuracy issues to begin with, so a remake really was called for. It's been a bold, well crafted remake, too.Tyrant_Lizard_King wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 8:37 am You know if this was 15-20 years I'd be all over Prehistoric Planet, I loved the Walking With series, but honestly I'm just not that interested. I totally get where you're coming from, though. I typically don't have a lot of interest in this type of show anymore, either. This one is just putting in honest effort.

I prefer not to call the titular creatures of the Alien franchise “Xenomorphs.” Even though that’s their popular name amongst fans, I personally prefer to call them what they’ve been called from the beginning. What “Xenomorph” is just a fancy word for. What they really are.
I just prefer to call them Aliens.

That's how I felt about Guardians 2. I actually liked Volume 3 but I don't think it's as amazing as a lot of people are saying. Wouldn't even come close to my top 10 MCU movies. My biggest gripe with the Guardians movies in general is that their whole family dynamic never feels earned. Rocket/Groot and Drax/Mantis have good, believable connections but with everyone else it feels kind of forced. I thought Volume 3 did a better job than Volume 2 but it was far from perfect.Handsome Shrek wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:18 am Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was awful. Honestly one of the worst MCU movies
Going off of this, my unpopular MCU opinion is that Yondu was one of the worst characters ever. He was fine in the first film and his arrow is definitely cool but his whole "arc" in Guardians 2 was so badly written and forced that it honestly feels like a last minute addition to me. I literally cannot comprehend that people actually cried over his death and consider it one of the saddest moments in the MCU. It was a cheesy, predictable sacrifice play that did nothing for me.

Re: Unpopular Opinion Thread
To piggyback on that, the Guardians movies in general are overrated. I love Guardians 1, Guardians 2 is enjoyable IMO, but hardly anything special, and Guardians 3 was just dreadful. On a side note, I also really don't like James Gunn: he strikes me as a jerk with a superiority complex.
Guardians 3 was just straight boring. The characters are cardboard shells of themselves in the first two films, the humor is juvenile and cringey (ANOTHER turd joke from Drax? Grown adults actually find that funny?), the villain was boring, the action and climax were unspectacular, etc.
But I do agree too that Volume 2 is overrated. Though it's C-tier MCU for me. Volume 3 is F-tier

Re: Unpopular Opinion Thread
I appreciate you going into why you feel this way -- I've softened a lot on the film, but I hated it on my first watch. I do agree with a lot of the spirit of what you're saying, and it makes sense because definitely the movie rests a lot of its weight on Yondu specifically. I liked him a lot in the first film but in the second film, he comes off too self-aware at times -- his recognition of him and Rocket both as assholes hiding pain is a touching idea, but it doesn't feel like the film has really built them towards the kind of self-reflection for Yondu to admit that out the way he does, and then his admission of seeing Quill like his son feels... I mean, I like the idea of what they're going for, but it somehow feels off for the character to say it out loud the way he does. I'd almost rather if Yondu made his sacrifice and that lead Peter to his realization, only after the fact, left unspoken. A lot of dialogue in that movie feels forced to make the plot move forward -- the way Ego reveals he put that tumor in Meredith's head does work for me because of performance, but really, it's still forced. It makes sense the movie would be weakened for you if Yondu did not click.HedorahIsBestGirl wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 11:00 amThat's how I felt about Guardians 2. I also wasn't a fan of how the second film felt like it bowlderized Gamora gently by emphasizing her as a maternal archetype and a women are wiser to Peter's selfishness. She had come off in the first film, and later in the third film, as like the rest of the team, a messed up person with a lot of different things going on and a perspective, but in the second film she just felt more cookiecutter to me, more always saying or wanting to do the most ideal thing. I know it wasn't as bad about this as my memory is telling me but still, as long as we're complaining about it.
I think one of the biggest concerns about the trilogy is the first movie puts a lot of effort into fleshing everyone out fairly equally, save Groot -- then the second and third films there's clearly a sort of A-tier and B-tier for which characters are most important. Peter and Rocket get fairly decent arcs throughout the films, Nebula to a lesser degree, while Drax, Mantis and Groot feel like sidekicks. The fact the conclusion to Drax's story rests on
Spoiler:
What gives you this impression of him? Is it just through his work or other things? There are a lot of directors who strike me like they feel the majority of Hollywood is below their level, I think of a lot of Hollywood directors as jerks, but even when I feel critical of Gunn's writing, he's never come off to me as someone who thought himself better, especially considering how he handled his firing.Handsome Shrek wrote:On a side note, I also really don't like James Gunn: he strikes me as a jerk with a superiority complex.

The Turd joke and Ego's penis conversation in Guardians 2 made me stop watching the movie.
Drax from Guardians 1 is a completely different character from the rest of his mcu appearances and no it doesn't count as character development. In the first movie, he's a stoic mature but socially unaware Adult with his treating everything literal. I hate how he was turned into a juvenile man child for the series.
Here's something with the movie industry: 1. Superhero films changing the movie industry negatively is overstated
2. Even if Superhero films dominate 90% of the film industry for the rest of history and filmmakers are eternally never going to be creative again, it's not the worst thing in the world. You still have books and video games to look for escapism.
3. The reason why the general audience watches the heroes journey narrative is because the GA is unaware or does not care about different narrative structures. Here's an example.
We have Tommy Boy, Shriek, 007 Casino Royale, Captain America the first Avenger, Lord of the Rings the fellowship of the ring, Star Wars A New Hope, Godzilla vs Kong, and Superman the movie.
To a lay person or General Audience member, they see a regular Superhero film, a live action comedy, a kids cartoon comedy, a fantasy movie, an outer space sci fi movie, a World War 2 Superhero movie, a spy film, and a monster film. To the lay person that's 8 different movies with only the cartoon and live action comedy being somewhat similar. In essence, this person felt like they watched 8 different films.
For the filmmakers or film critic, they see 8 heroes journey films. Thus they feel like they watched the same movie 8 times.
As long as the background of the character, the type of struggles, the setting, the costumes, and the tone is different a lay person can watch the heroes journey an infinite number of times without noticing that they watched the same "narrative".
GVK: TNE is a modern day 70s Showa Godzilla movie. Being a massive budget modern blockbuster CGI film instead of traditional 70s tokusatsu techniques doesn't change that.
Monsterverse is not similar to either MCU nor Bayformers just because all three are big budget CGI blockbuster franchises.

I get what you’re saying about the heroes journey, but depending on who you ask and how pedantic you want to get, you could also argue there’s only seven basic narrative structures to begin with. I personally consider this overtly reductive, but it makes a strong point that much of what we consume is archetypal. I mean shoot, just look at Commedia dell'arte’s various stock figures. Familiarity and repetition isn’t necessarily anything new.

I'm surprised nobody else seems to be bothered by Drax's character regression, but I fully agree. He was funny in Guardians 1, and his jokes didn't seem like they were written by an 8 year old at the time

Peter Quill suffered the same treatment. In Guardians 1, he was cocky and a bit goofy but he was still quite competent and could take things seriously. From Guardians 2 onwards, he's a man child and the butt of everyone's jokes thanks to his childish overconfidence and easily wounded pride. Also, just gonna say it: Chris Pratt isn't a very good actor. Dave Bautista got screwed over by a bad script in Guardians 2, I at least partially blame Pratt for Quill turning into an ever-more insufferable characters.Handsome Shrek wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 2:47 pm I'm surprised nobody else seems to be bothered by Drax's character regression, but I fully agree. Idk how unpopular this is but Bautista is my favorite wrestler turned actor. He's got hella range compared to Rock "The Dwyane" Johnson and even John Cena.
His bit in Blade Runner 2 is my favorite part of that whole movie.

Voldemort vs. Dumbledore is easily the best fight in Harry Potter and makes Harry's final fight with Voldemort that much more lackluster.
