Anyway though, luckily I’m working on getting onboarded to a job at a gym. I had a second interview yesterday that seemed to go well, so I’m hoping it works out. If this job doesn’t work out then I’ll need to move, so it’s a real “thumb twiddling” process. And it’s especially difficult because I adopted a cat about a month and a half ago, and I’ve never travelled with animals

Got a Facebook notification today, one of those memory ones. I don’t even know why I use Facebook, I never post anything there, ever. It was a picture of me with my uncle.

I don’t think I ever told this story here before but here it goes, content warning, mentions of some pretty heinous crimes.

I used to be great friends with my Uncle. I feel like he was one of the few members of the family that understood me. We had a lot of the same interests and hobbies, when we met up on vacations we’d go to some nearby arcade that we could find.

Back in 2017 I got the news that he had been arrested for the possession and distribution of, well, lets say content of the pornographic nature featuring minors. I remember it vividly, I was driving my mother somewhere when she just casually told me. I was stunned, my body went numb and I pulled over. She couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Like she couldn’t figure out why the fact that someone I had a bond with and looked up to turned out to have done something absolutely horrific would affect me like that.

It wasn’t a punch to the gut, it was a dagger straight through it. It felt like my reality was just shattered and all the good memories I had with him were just ruined.

He got some fancy ass expensive lawyer so he didn’t end up going to jail or even getting put on the registry. Which he should have in my opinion.

I wish he got help for this instead, if he turned out to be a pedo but didn’t act on it and was trying to get help, it would be super weird and hard to adjust and cope with, but I probably would have gotten over it. But instead he not only obtained the illicit material, but he also distributed it. Those are two major, MAJOR red lines.

I’ve never seen him again after that. I can’t make myself interact with him anymore.

As you can see even after 6 years I haven’t fully recovered from this. Every couple months I have a cry session about it among other fucked up family shit. Like my aunt ODing and dying from heroin, leaving behind a teenage daughter that my household had to take in. That’s another chapter in the “why gottatalktothefake has a fucked up worldview and is the way he is” story though.

I think I’m just going to delete Facebook.

^Having a family member commit a crime, especially of that variety, is something that is pretty hard to reconcile with. It creates this weird mental mindfuck where you wonder if some good memories are completely obliterated by the heinous crimes. I don't think there's an easy answer, and it's up for you to decide. Although the minors got it the worst, worth remembering that crimes don't only affect the direct victims, but the family members and people in the immediate vicinity. I'm sure it must have been weird/incredibly awkward for your mother. It's her brother. Have you tried talking to her about this? Wish you and your family luck with working this all out though.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes. It’s something that, as I’ve said, I’ve been trying to get over for over 6 years. I don’t think I ever will though. I think it kinda became the reinforcement of my mentality of “everything you love will be taken from you some day even if it’s not your fault, so why even try at all?”. I think it’s a weird form of the hedgehog’s dilemma. The fall of 2016 wasn’t a good year for me, I lost a lot that year in various ways. And this happening just a few months later just hammered it all home. And then recently I got laid off from my job that I actually liked. Big company layoff that cut more than 10% of the workforce, it made statewide news, so it loops back to “why even try”.

I don’t even think my grandmother knows that I know what happened. She talks to me about him like nothing occurred and I don’t have the heart to tell her that I know and want her to stop talking to me about him. Especially about things I do that are similar to him. The last thing I want to hear is how I am just like my sex offender uncle that had and gave out child porn. She’s lost two of her three children and I can’t bring myself to upset her.

I feel like my last few posts here on TK have let a lot of heavy stuff out, so I apologize, it’s just one of those nights, ya know?

Regrettably, I can relate to all of this. One of my three uncles on my mom's side - who I also felt quite close to as a kid - stalked and attempted to have an affair with a 15-year-old girl while he was married with a young son. Her father got a tape recording of him trying to solicit sex from her on the phone and he went to jail for a while, his wife divorced him and got primary custody of their son. He later remarried a woman who's somehow just as bad as him and they're the black sheep of the family. I found out about what he did three years ago and it's really changed my perspective on some family stuff. I'm honestly pretty disgusted by the way my mom constantly defends him and acts like it's no big deal. I can relate to that "dagger to the gut" feeling, that's exactly how I felt when I found out my uncle who I used to look up to was an ephebophile. That's only the worst of it, he has a long history of creepy behavior toward younger women that's started to come out...

Wish I could say the same. My creepy uncle was just at my house over the weekend and I wasn't happy about it. I hate how all his siblings try to downplay what he did and get mad at me if I say anything bad about him. What's worse, my mom sometimes compares me to him (not in a good way) and it really pisses me off. Having shitty people like that in your family really fucking sucks. I hope in time it gets easier for you to cope with; it's started to for me, mainly because I don't see the man all that often, though still more often than I'd like (which is never).

Coming to a realization because of a conversation I was having: I was talking about WHY I avoided watching anime for a long time, and I mentioned it was because the biggest anime fans in my highschool were all extremely "off-putting". I guess typing that out unlocked a repressed memory: they molested me. Repeatedly. They laughed about it all the time too. I somehow forgot that that happened. IDK how, but I did. But the memories have come flooding back and Ive realized just how fucked up the whole thing was. I remember a Halloween party where they ripped my clothes off. I guess for some reason I thought that was a joke at the time.

I am incredibly disturbed, and sorry to hear that. It's good that you can recognize what this was, abuse. This is a good example of why it's important to not "joke" about sexual abuse and whatnot. Bad people use that as ammunition to deligitimize the experiences people go through.

Yeah, they always made jokes about it. They called me "Big Mike" and always talked about me in very positive ways so I guess I never made the connection before that they were abusing me. But for some reason that conversation I just had made me realize what it was. I was always offput by anime and anime fans and I couldn't really put my finger on why, but now I realized it. All the memories just came flooding back. How I told them to stop and they just made jokes about it.

I also defended these people regularly. I insisted they were fine people when my GF said they were fucking assholes.
