Celine forced herself to let out a chuckle at Marina's comment regarding what Blind was wearing. "In all fairness, have you seen what many of the superheros and villains wear around here? Blind's outfit fits right in, in its own way."

With a deep breath and some composure regained through sheer force of will, she looked back toward Marina. "Hopefully that came with instructions on how to get to the address..."

-------------------

Gerald cluthced onto Roadrunner as tight as he could. He could barely stand, his knees knocking against each other. He turned and pointed further down the alleyway. "T-that way." He stammered. "I... I was being robbed and... Bloodless showed up and k-killed all the thugs! She's still there... Puppeteer went in after her..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pain in her stomach, it never went away. Kala had tried to simply sleep it away, but it had not gone away. No, it had only gotten worse. Why did she feel this way? Was she hungry? Had she eaten something bad, something that only good blood would replace? She had tried to remain asleep, to do what she knew Vinnie and Heng would have wanted her to do, but the pains he felt had grown too much, too unruly for her to ignore. It had to be addressed. So, she had snuck out behind Vinnie's back in search of blood. She knew she was not supposed to kill, but how else was she to satiate this hunger she felt, this pain that was tearing away at her?
For her, that answer had come from a commotion she had heard in this alleyway. What she had seen had surprised her: the man from the news being attacked by thugs.
"Kill them, kill the sinners, rid this city of their filth and purge the toxins you devoured." The voice in her mind hissed. She was in no mood to argue with the voice, even though she knew Vinnie and Heng would be upset if she killed. So, she had killed the thugs and their guard dogs. She had barely felt their bullets and knives bounce off her skin. She had barely noticed that the man from the news had fled in terror from her. No, all she cared for was their blood. She began to drink it, and she felt the pain begin to subside. So, it had been something she had eaten that was bad for her. Out with the bad, in with the good.
Yet, she was unable to enjoy her meal. She heard the footsteps approach her, and she turned to see two others, one with several dolls that floated around them, and one who wore funny goggles like the kids in the jeep from that one movie she had seen before the big lizard attacked them. She had never seen them before, but they knew of her. The name Foxtrot meant nothing to her, but Puppeteer, she had heard that before somewhere. And why did they want her to back away from the bodies? To bury them?
"No, they are sinners as well, heroes who are no better than those they punish! They do not kill those who have done wrong, so they allow them to continue doing wrong!" The voice in her mind hissed once more. "They are guilty, their punishment is death!"
Kala stared at Foxtrot and Puppeteer. If they were heroes... No, she couldn't kill them. Everyone already was afraid of her just for killing bad people! If she killed actual heroes who were trying to do good...
"They want you dead for doing what they are incapable of!" The voice rasped to her. "You need this blood to become well again! They..." The voice stopped, and Kala heard a shift in its tone. It no longer was so raspy, so weak and scratchy, but instead low and potent. "This smell, they carry a scent... The scent of the one who did this to you. The one who left you... who left us in this state! Agents of the Curse Spreader! They work with a threat not just to you, but to the child you care so much for..."
Kala's eyes went wide as she sniffed the air. At first, she didn't think she smelled anything out of the ordinary, but then it hit her. She DID recognize this strange musty overbearing scent! She didn't know where she recognized it from, but she began to feel anger build up within her. Just smelling it made her angry, and the causes were right there, as she felt her thoughts be absorbed in her growing rage and bloodlust...
-------------
Alice was on edge. This was her first time encountering Bloodless face to face, the first time she had been so close to such a notorious murderer as this. She tried to present herself as unthreatening as possible, her voice as soft and calm as she could muster despite the strong feelings she held. "Just back away from those bodies please. We'll bring you in for-"
A bloodcurling howl from Bloodless dashed the attempt to talk her down, and the masked girl charged forward, claws at the ready to tear into them. Alice sent the signal through her strings into her dolls, and before Bloodless could reach them she was intercepted by Alice's seven dolls. Their miniature guns fired, and though six of those shots merely plinked off of the vigilante's skin, one hit her in the left eye. She hissed and leaped back to begin rubbing the dust and bullet from her eye...
"Don't worry," Blind assures Marina through her voice modulator. Her suit shimmers, and she fades from view: not invisible, but mirroring her surroundings. "I can blend into a crowd."
The vigilante's blurred shape began moving away. While she was near impossible to see at a glance, sharp eyes could make her out, and keen ears hear her muffled footsteps.
"I'll keep watch from the rooftops, but say something if you had a request or question. I've got good ears."
As Bloodless leaped towards them, Foxtrot snatched her grappling hook with her free hand. The hooked wire caught hold of the edge of the rooftop and she rocketed upwards and out of harm’s way.
Taking advantage of the opening Alice had created, Foxtrot used her other hand to carefully aim two nanosteel rounds into Bloodless’s shins in an attempt to disable her. Her goggles ensured the shots wouldn’t hit bone…
While the bullet from the miniature doll held guns had done no real damage to Bloodless, Foxtrot's nanosteel rounds were a different story. If Kala had expected them to simply plink off of her skin, that expectation was shattered as the rounds punched through her skin and muscle and flesh and out the other end, bringing a frenzied howl of disbelief and pain from the feral vigilante. How had that gone through?! Bullets had never hurt her in such a way before, so why now? Was it her weakened state?!
She began to leap forward toward Foxtrot, but the shots had done their job, and she stumbled forward in her attempt to leap. Alice seized the opportunity and sent her dolls in to harass the murderer. They stabbed and shot at her, and those who hit the wound areas opened by Foxtrot bypassed Bloodless's hardened skin. The feral beast slashed out, her claws slicing at the dolls that circled and surrounded her. She cut two clean in half and severed the thread of a third, but as the thread went slack, the doll that had been attached to it began to glow, and too late did Bloodless realize she had triggered a bomb within the doll. The explosion sent her sliding back, but she was otherwise unharmed. She felt something behind her feet, bricks dislodged from the explosion, and with the resulting dust cloud from the explosion as cover, she hurled both bricks toward Foxtrot as fast and as hard as she could, hoping to snipe the goggled woman and take her down...
"Yeah, but we're dressed normal-ish compared to-" Marina stopped as she turned just to see Blind seemingly vanish in a strange shimmer that emanated from her suit. Her face was one of surprise, mouth agape as she looked around for Blind. Her superhuman vision allowed her to see the ghostly silhouette of Blind, but otherwise the woman and turned totally invisible. She blinked rapidly to snap herself out of her surprised state.
"...That works too, I suppose" Marina said, turning back to face their current path after casting a glance to the GPS on her phone.
Marina couldn't begin to fathom how Blind was even able to make or purchase such a suit; this was something she'd expect the military to have in some secret base somewhere. It's unlikely she had any connections to the military, as she didn't think they'd just let someone run around wearing that thing, and Blind's vigilante status seemed to lend credence to that theory. This also made Marina wonder where that bug-mask guy got his exoskeleton thing, the one that looked similar to those worn by the gunmen that attacked them at DRU. That, as well as his wealth of knowledge about GenTech's schemes made her think there had to be some link between this guy and the shady company. On one hand, this could be some elaborate 4D chess strategy by the company to lure her into a false sense of security, then kill her at this "motel". The alternative is that GenTech had done something to him or someone he cared about and is out for revenge. This wasn't too dissimilar to the current situation she found herself in, although Bug-Man seems to have been at this for much longer, given his age and accumulated dirt on the company. She supposed she would find out in time, though if this truly was an ambush set by GenTech, she felt a bit more confident knowing she had Blind and Alice there for back-up.
"I hear you mate, settle down!" Roadrunner said as he brushed some dirt off of Gerald's tuxedo and gave him a pat on the shoulder.
"Now, you stay here while I go and remind Bloodless that it's past her bedtime" he said with a sly grin before disappearing in a gust of wind.
Leaving Gerald behind, Roadrunner bolted down the alleyway and saw Alice and Foxtrot already engaging the vigilante. At this point, he wondered why the term "vigilante" was still being applied to Bloodless. A vigilante at least has a sense of justice, Bloodless just kills without remorse. It all seemed pretty "villain-y" to him, and thus he treated Bloodless as such. At his speed, he saw his quarry winding up to throw a brick at Foxtrot in slow-motion. He saw all the contractions in Bloodless's muscles beneath her skin as she slowly extended her arm forward. He brought his left shoulder to bear, and a microsecond before the brick could leave Bloodless's palm, he collided with the "vigilante" with enough force to create a sonic boom, launching debris into the air and momentarily stunning Alice and Foxtrot. The sheer force of the impact caused Bloodless to become a living projectile that punched through multiple brick walls and carved a shallow trench into the street as she skidded to a stop, smashing a lamp-post in the process. Before the villain could process what just happened, Roadrunner was already right beside her, wagging his finger at her as if scolding a child.
"Tisk Tisk Tisk. How many times are we going to do this dance, ey lass? I'm starting to get a little miffed that you can't seem to take a hint!" he said, mockingly.
In an undisclosed GenTech facility, Dr. Mills oversaw a series of monitors that displayed the vital signs of a patient, one he'd never expect he'd have to see. Captain Thomas Kruger lay on a hospital bet in critical condition, bandages covering most of his body and IV's snaking out from every which way. An oxygen tube and mask had been placed on his mouth to help feed him air, hissing periodically as it fed fresh oxygen to his damaged lungs. He sighed in disappointment as he looked down to examine the former mercenary's x-ray results, and they weren't promising: He'd suffered numerous skull fractures, his spine was broken in multiple places, and his ribcage was crushed. The fact that he was even still alive was a miracle, even with GenTech's best doctors keeping him alive with everything from standard triage to experimental treatments. Given Kruger's value to the company, it wasn't surprising that they'd do everything they could to try and salvage this asset. With the extent of his injuries, many would consider the man to be a lost cause, and Mills was half-tempted to agree with them: Kruger's prognosis was very grim, with an estimated 25% chance of survival. Even if he did survive, he'd never walk again: the damage to his spine was so severe that there was no possibility of repairing it. His head injuries would likely result in permanent brain damage and reduced cognition, if not outright rendering him vegetative and thus useless to the company.
He was stable for now, and his brainwave activity indicated that his mind was still active inside his shattered body, but nobody was sure for how much longer. Mills didn't even know where to begin attempting to fix this man, and if it were up to him he'd simply pull the plug on Kruger and put him out of his misery. Alas however, he had specific instructions to use anything he could to try and revive the mercenary. Mills had considered creating another batch of serum used for Project Hades, but given that it had already created one unstable monster, the last thing the company needed was another running around. This was assuming Kruger would even live that long, as the serum used on Franklin Ferri took a year and 6 months to synthesize. Creating one that wouldn't turn Kruger into a rampaging abomination would require even more time to fine-tune, further making this course of action a dead end. He put down the x-ray images and looked out the observation window to Kruger's destroyed body. If Kruger were to die, GenTech would lose it's best mercenary, with no-one else coming close to his skill and combat prowess. He had heard the R&D department had made strides in the development of the Mk. 6 powered exoskeletons, but these would be useless without a talented operator to use them.
Mills slumped down in his chair and turned to a separate monitor to see if any news of this "Toxcinder" had come up, scrolling through various news feeds. Most were still talking about the incident at DRU, as well as an article here and there about the explosion at the GenTech facility the night before. He held his gaze on one article in particular, one about another sighting of some "Spaceman" in Siberia, before losing interest and scrolling past it.
The sonic boom created by Roadrunner's collision rattled Foxtrot's eardrums and just about threw her from the wall she was perched on. It all happened so fast that she didn't fully process what had happened until she heard Roadrunner's voice through a hole in the brick wall below her, leading to the street beyond the allyway.
"Fucking hell, Roadrunner, you scared the shit out of me!" Foxtrot shouted. She began to rappel back to the floor of the alleyway, and caved in to an adrenaline-fueled laugh. "But thanks for the save!"
She retracted her grappling hook and ran through the series of holes in the brick wall until she had made it to the street where Roadrunner had knocked Bloodless prone. She kept a safe distance, ready to dive behind cover at a moment's notice as she called out to the masked murderer.
"Bloodless, stand down! You're outnumbered and outgunned. Come quietly and I'll do what I can to ensure you're given fair treatment."
Following the sounds of carnage occurring deeper into the alley way, Dhriti began to break out into a sprint as she heard the sounds of gunshots echoing toward her. What the fuck was going on up there? She had to find out, she had to make sure the others were okay! hopefully nobody had gotten hurt yet, but an anxious feeling in Dhriti's stomach told her that was likely not the case. Suddenly, a powerful shockwave rocked the entirety of the alley way that knocked Dhriti off balance briefly, followed by a deafening boom that caused Dhriti's ears to ring for a few moments.
Ah hell... now i REALLY need to make sure everyone is alright! Dhriti thought to herself, swiftly regaining her bearings. Pushing herself to her limits, Dhriti was quick to make headway after the others, running through the holes in the brick walls made from the brutal attack. Seeing the others standing precariously, Dhriti moved closer and adopted a fighting stance, before her eyes suddenly locked onto the form on the ground.
"B-Bloodless?!" Dhriti gasped to herself far behind Foxtrot, Alice, and Roadrunner, before she conjured a second pair of ethereal arms from her shoulders, ready to strike in case the violent vigilante made any sudden moves...
The blow had sent Bloodless's mind reeling as she lay crumpled on the ground. What had even hit her? Her vision blurry for a few moments, it began to clear up, and what she saw in her groggy state was not what she had expected. At first she had thought it was the monster from before that had landed a surprise hit on her, but what she saw was the annoying looking superhero guy who was fast. What was his name again? Speedy Gonzales? Rapidash? Flasher? Just trying to think hurt her brain, but she had a feeling it was one of those names.
His words annoyed her. She didn't need the voice in her head telling her this as well was a sinner who allowed the truly guilty to walk free, just the fact the tone in his voice was treating her like a misbehaving child was enough to infuriate Bloodless. She tried to take a swing at him as she rose to her feet, but her hand stopped in mid air. She tried to force it forward, but it refused to budge, and more strangely she felt pain tear into her arm. What.. What was going on? Was this one of those other heroes?
That was when she noticed it, what looked to be string that had bound her arm up. String... that had been attached to one of those floating puppets she had severed! The string had tightened around her right arm and was cutting into her flesh. It burned her skin just having it touch her, and as it dug into her muscle the pain only grew worse. She tried to reach her left arm to sever the string, but another string wrapped around her arm and extended it out, lifting Bloodless just off the ground with both of her arms extended tight. The source stepped forward in front of Foxtrot, The Puppeteer who still had four dolls with their weapons aimed at the vigilante. The eyes of the doll using hero were cold and blue, yet Kala sensed a burning hatred deep within as their eyes locked.
"I would do as she says." The Puppeteer plainly said. "It's checkmate."
Kala wanted to scream, to thrash her way out of her binds and tear past these annoyances, these threats to herself and to Vinnie and to the people, but she felt herself begin to slip away. She watched her blood slowly drip from her cut arms and her prior wounds from the monster and the bullets she had taken. Why did she feel so weak? She couldn't stop here... She couldn't lose here... Vinnie needed her... Everyone needed her. They were... allied with evil... They were... in the wrong...
Kala's eyes clouded over, and before she lost conscious, the voice in her head spoke as she felt something begin to take over.
"As I told you before, if it is too much for you, then I shall take over..."
---------
Alice took a sigh of relief as she saw Bloodless's body go limp. Thank goodness, she had finally taken the hint and given up... or so it seemed. If this was some sort of trap, the bitch was losing both of her arms. It was something she wasn't particularly fond of using her strings for, but the material used was incredibly strong and flexible, able to tear through a persons body with ease. In the rare case her dolls were severed from the string, she could still use it to bind or constrict troublesome people, or to fling objects.
"Excellent work, you two." She told Foxtrot and Roadrunner. "Crippling her mobility and leaving her vulnerable to be binded like this, she never saw it coming." Yet even as she said that, she felt something was off. From what she had heard about Bloodless, she was much faster and more slippery than this. All attempts to capture her had ended in failure, and only a few had even managed to get a proper fight against her before she snuck away undetected. Yet, here she had almost staggered into everything thrown at her and had gone down with little fuss...
"My apologies, love. You know I like to make an entrance" Roadrunner responded to Foxtrot, throwing in a wink and a smirk before turning his attention to Bloodless, who was clearly on her last legs as Alice's puppet strings held her in place. As Bloodless collapsed into unconsciousness, Roadrunner chuckled and crossed his arms before eying the unconscious vigilante up and down.
"Y'know, I'd like to think we may have finally "talked" some sense into our old friend here, but...I'm not holding out hope. Her ilk are a bit tougher to get through to" said Roadrunner.
"Anyway, what do we do with her now? She's a slippery one, so I hope you have a plan to keep her contained" said Roadrunner, nodding to Kala as before looking at Alice expectantly.
Here they had Bloodless defeated and at their mercy; this could be their only chance to get her off the streets for good, provided they had some sort of containment measure to keep her from escaping. That in itself was the issue: How do you trap something as intangible as a shadow? Perhaps Alice had some sort of magic spell or something to prevent her from shifting into her spectral state? If so, Roadrunner would be relieved, as well as the city as a whole that one less nutter was running around killing people.
Marina, Blind and Celine had arrived at the Rosenfield Motel after a relatively short walk, all things considered. The building was roughly U-shaped and about 3 floors high, as well as rather plain looking aside from the terra-cotta roof shingles like so many buildings in California seemed to have. She looked to Celine and nodded, then attempted to look for Blind who was presumably still around. Even with her superhuman senses, she had a bit of difficulty pinpointing Blind's exact location. She soon grew tired of playing "Where's Cyber-Woman" and called out to her invisible bodyguard.
"Schwarzenegger's not here, you can come out now, Predator!" she said as she waited for Blind to reveal herself.
"I think most of the hiding went the other way around in that."
A nearby rain gutter shuddered as a slowly materializing Blind slid down it, joining Marina on street level. The masked woman looked up at the motel in appreciation.
"I'm glad that was a quiet walk," the vigilante says, turning back to Marina, "but I hope you won't hesitate to reach out if you need help. Not just protection or extra eyes. You probably want some time alone after... well, everything today, but just remember you don't have to be."
Blind offers Marina a hand. "I hope sticking together is how we'll make it through this."
As Bloodless collapsed into unconsciousness, Dhriti relaxed her stance from far behind everyone else. Though the fight was over, Dhriti felt an inkling of anxiety still. She'd heard stories of Bloodless' ferocity and toughness, and the carnage she left in her wake. Seeing her go down so quickly, even to other supers, felt... wrong.
Stepping out from the alleyway, Dhriti moved up to the others and spoke.
"HI. Sorry for following you, but it sounded like you needed help." She looked to the unconscious form of Bloodless. "Clearly I was wrong. But I'd recommend we bind her up or something, so she can't move. We don't know how long she's gonna be out..."
Celine let out a sigh of relief as they came to the hotel. Closer than she had feared, and it looked better than whatever dinky ass roadside motel or tavern she had in mind. Shaking her head from her thoughts, she looked down toward her pocket, where her phone was. Just thinking about the message she had gotten, the new she had received, and the fact she had to be the one to break it to Marina, the canary being sent down into the coal mine to die first.
No, not yet. Once they were inside, and with absolutely zero chance of anyone else being able to eavesdrop and listen in, would she tell her. "Safety in numbers, after all." She said after Blind with a weak smile on her face, one that quickly faded back into a neutral expression, she best she could offer at the moment.
____________________________
The night streets of Los Diamantes was something Vinnie never thought he would experience again. When he had been taken in by Heng, he had been relieved. Spending months on the streets, on the run from thugs and crooks and police men, having to scrounge around and fighting off giant rats for food, it was an experience that never left the kid, one he was thankful he had gotten away from. Yet now, as he sat in the passenger's seat of Heng's car, seeing the street lights and the lights of the late night city brought back memories he wished had remained buried forever.
And what of Kala? How was she faring in her current condition? Was she huddled in a corner of some alleyway too weak from stomach pains to move? Had she run into the wrong crowd and made things worse for herself? Was she even still in the city limits? So many thoughts flooded Vinnie's mind, and the kid curled his knees up against his stomach and wrapped his arms around them.
"I know you're worried about her." Heng gave a quick side glance from the device she had in her hand over to Vinnie, before she brought her eyes back between the device and the road. To Vinnie, it looked like a walkie talkie but with what seemed to be a radar in the middle. There was a constant bleep that came from the decide, and a dot on it that was very slowly getting closer to the center. "So am I. We're getting close to her. Should be no further than two or three miles down. With any luck, she'll be in a cooperative state and not have made things worse than they are already."
"I... I certainly hope so as well." Vinnie said. "Um... Heng, how exactly are... Are you tracking her with that?"
"Oh, that's easy. Remember when Kala was buried under all those steel supports in her fight against that werewolf? She needed medical care on top of her natural regeneration to recover from that, and I took the opportunity to implant a small microchip into the back of her bra-"
Heng stopped. The air, already a brisk chill in the February night, had suddenly become that much colder. Vinnie could see his breath form in front of him, and felt his blood chill. "H-Heng? What is... What is happening? Why is it so cold now?"
The car sped up, now going well past the speed limit. "Something very bad is happening with Kala." Heng's voice was tense, and Vinnie could feel the fear in her voice, the uncertainty. "Something I've seen once before and... We have to hurry."
----------------
"That's what I am working on." Alice began to walk forward and ready more string to bind up Kala, when she felt it. The air suddenly grew cold, unnaturally cold. She saw her own breath in front of her, and her blood felt... strange, in a way she hadn't felt since she had first seen the bodies of her deceased parents years ago.
Then, came a voice, a voice from the limp form of Bloodless. It was her voice, yet it was not at the same time. It sounded older, lower in tone and volume to where it was almost a whisper, yet there was a power in those words that was like a weight upon her.
"You who permit evil to exist, your judgement is at hand."
The body of Bloodless stiffened and a pulse radiated out from her. The heroes around her were pushed back by the pulse as if struck by a great physical force. Alice was sent toppling head over heels several dozen feet backwards, and when she rose to her feet, what greeted her was Bloodless, who stared back at her with glowing golden eyes behind the mask. The short blonde hair of the vigilante grew and flowed behind her, and pulses of chilled air continued to radiate from the awoken fiend. What Alice's eyes locked onto, however, was the blood that dripped from the wounds across Bloodless's body and arms, wounds from her fight against Franklin and given to her just now. The blood moved up into the air, as if alive, and sliced through the string that had bound Bloodless in place like a razor.
Alice couldn't believe what she was seeing. None of this was in the reports she had read. It was known that Bloodless drained her victims dry, but... to control her own blood?! No, this was unheard of, unprecedented. What... Was this even Bloodless now, or... had they awoken something even worse within her?
"Perish for your sins against humanity."
Bloodless pointed a hand forward, and the blood that swirled around her shot forward like spiked chains toward Roadrunner and Foxtrot. In that same instance, where once she had been over a hundred feet away from the shocked Alice, she suddenly was right in front of her. The doll master tried to keep her at bay with her dolls, but a single swipe of the sharpened claws severed their strings and a second swipe, faster than Alice's eye could follow, struck her in the stomach. Alice felt the air rush out of her lungs as she was sent flying backwards into a brick wall. She crumpled onto the ground, the back of her head a bloodied mess that matched the blood stain upon the brick wall...
Marina looked at Blind's open hand, hesitating to shake it even after all the hero had done for her, Sierra and Franklin. She knew that accepting the handshake as a form of gratitude was the right thing to do, but she couldn't help but feel like she'd be betraying Martin by shaking hands with the people she blamed for his death. Still, at this point she was far too deep in this mess to reject their help, as much as she hated to admit it. Hell, she probably wouldn't have made it this far without Blind, Alice or Celine to have her back. A glimmer of rationality began to shine through the fog of animosity like it had done before when Alice promised to help save Franklin and Sierra. Was her contempt misplaced? Silverlight alone was responsible for killing Martin, not Blind, not Durga, not Alice, not Celine or Roadrunner or Vespid. All these people had been nothing but sympathetic to her plight, and her contempt for them wavered with each act of kindness. It was now a tug of war, between the part of Marina that still despised them for not holding each other accountable in the case of Martin's death, and the growing part of her that believed that she may be wrong about them all being bad people. The conflict was so strong that it was almost visible on her face as she closed her eyes and shook Blind's hand.
At that moment, she felt like there was truly no going back. Perhaps it would be good for her to challenge her views, however simply because she was beginning to soften her stance on the heroes didn't mean she trusted them. Being raised to be cautious of strangers since she was a kid ensured that Blind and the others still had some ways to go before Marina would fully trust them. Right now, she trusted them enough that they wouldn't double cross her, and that they had her best interests in mind.
"Right. We'll figure this out as a team, I guess" she said, letting go of Blind's hand and turning to look at the motel entrance. She took a deep breath in and approached the entrance of the motel, pushing the doors open and holding them open to allow Blind and Celine in. Once they were inside the main lobby, she made her way over to the receptionist desk where a young man with dark long hair sat leaning back in a leather-padded chair, playing on his phone. Upon hearing the approaching footsteps of the group, he looked up and hastily hid his phone under a pile of papers then cleared his throat.
"Hello! Welcome to the Rosenfield Motel! Do you have a reservation with us?" He asked.
"Yes, it should be under Marina Griffin?" Marina replied. She hoped that her name was enough to find the reservation Vespid got her, and that she wouldn't need some kind of paperwork or QR code of some kind.
The receptionist scrolled through a list of names on a computer before finally stopping and taking out a pair of keys, handing them to Marina.
"Yep! I've got your reservation here and paid. Your room will be 52 on the second floor. Enjoy your stay!" said the receptionist as Marina took the keys from him and nodded with a smile.
"Alright ladies, let's see how dingy this place is" Marina said, quiet enough to where she hoped the receptionist didn't hear her.
Roadrunner's grin disappeared as he watched Kala suddenly get back up, despite the extent of her injuries which should have made it impossible.
"Oh lovely, going for round two are we, Bloodless?" Roadrunner said as he crossed his arms, unimpressed.
This too soon faded as Bloodless's eyes lit up a shining gold and the blood oozing from her wounds seemed to take on a life of its own, becoming crimson tendrils that twisted and writhed around her. Roadrunner uncrossed his arms and adopted a defensive stance; for the first time in his battles with Bloodless, he had no idea what to do or what was going on. She'd never done anything like this before, as she usually scurried away before she sustained too much damage. Was this what happens when she's forced to go all out? If so, Roadrunner feared that this would be the hardest battle he's fought yet. His thoughts immediately went to Alice, Foxtrot and the newly arrived Durga: he knew Durga and Alice could hold their own, but Foxtrot possessed no superhuman abilities and was thus the most vulnerable. Suddenly, he heard Bloodless utter a phrase and the next thing he knew, several blood "spikes" were on a collision course with him and Foxtrot. In an instant, he grabbed Foxtrot and dashed away from the incoming spikes, causing them to pierce into the ground. By the time he came to a stop and focused his attention back on Bloodless, he saw the fiend fling Alice across the way and into a brick wall hard enough to leave a blood spatter before her limp body slumped to the ground.
"ALICE!!!" Roadrunner cried out, letting go of Foxtrot and preparing to attack Bloodless head-on.
"Foxy, go help Alice, I'll take on Bloodless. Hurry, she looks to be in a real bad shape!" he said before dashing forward at supersonic speeds. He held his fist out infront of him: though he lacked superhuman strength, his speed and momentum was more than enough to generate tremendous force behind his blows. Amidst a sonic boom, Roadrunner cracked Bloodless across the jaw before skidding to a halt, his shoes squealing against the asphalt like the tires of a car. He wheeled around and balled both his hands into fists, waiting for the she-beast's next move...
Dhriti staggered back in shock as Bloodless sprang back to life and underwent a metamorphosis. Her hair... grew?! And the air, it felt... cold. Deathly cold. Similar to that stinging sensation you felt when touching ice... it radiated off of the vigilante like an aura of death. What the hell was going on with Bloodless? Since when was she capable of doing this?! She'd heard many reports about Bloodless... seen the carnage she was capable of... but never had she seen something this documented in the past. Were they in the presence of a new phenomenon? Dhriti hardened her stance immediately in preparation for Bloodless' next move, but is unable to react in time as the vigilante attacks Alice. Dhriti watched in horror as Bloodless crumpled Alice in a single blow, blood pooling beneath the vigilante's body from the vicious strike!
"ALICE!" Dhriti gasped in horror as Alice crumpled to the ground. As Roadrunner ran to hold off Bloodless, using his super speed to knock the vigilante farther away, Dhriti turned to Foxtrot.
"He's... he's going to need someone to back him up." Dhriti flexed, conjuring her golden arms once again. "I'll help him out. Get Alice to safety!"
Dhriti quickly rushed into the fray, sprinting full speed to where Bloodless had come to rest and Roadrunner stood, keeping her manifested arms in a defensive posture in case Bloodless suddenly attacked...
After taking a moment to recover from being taken for a high-speed ride by Roadrunner to avoid Bloodless's impaling chains, Foxtrot gathered her senses and raced over to Alice's unconscious body. Alice's head had hit the brick wall hard, a potentially lethal injury. Foxtrot quickly hooked her arm under the woman's shoulders and fetched her grappling gun with her free hand. Aiming high, she launched a hook onto the roof three stories up and tested it for strength.
Holding onto Alice tight, Foxtrot held down the trigger on her grappling gun, and the wire began to retract. The pair were yanked upwards as they rappeled towards the edge of rooftop. Hanging precariously now, Foxtrot used her boot to feel around for a window, then kicked hard to break the glass.
"Fuck, you're a heavy girl," she groaned as she carefully crawled inside the third story floor with Alice in her arms. She began to check for vital signs in the safety of the indoors, hoping the other woman was still alive...
Celine gave a slow nod to Marina. Hopefully, this place would be adequate for Marina's needs. Yet the feeling in her stomach only continued to churn and eat away at her. With any luck, Alice and the others weren't having as bad a time as she was currently, the weight of the news she had received through the text message crushing away at her mind...
Roadrunner's strike had been too fast for Bloodless to react to, and the force of the hit lifted her clean off the ground and sent her tumbling backwards head over heels from one end of the alleyway down to the other. As she tumbled through the air, she dug her claws into the hardened rock and concrete, cracking it beneath her grip as she slowed herself to a stop, leaving trenches in her wake. Her eyes peered out behind the mask as she lifted her head up, only a bruise remaining from where Roadrunner had struck her. Two of the unholy heathens were out of sight but still close, and two had remained to fight her.
What foolishness, for the child to be unable to handle even these inferior degenerates. They knew not what they were facing.
The eyes of the possessed vigilante flashed, and the chains of blood reformed once more, this time turning into thousands of sharpened crystals of blood that flew up into the air, then began to rain back down toward Roadrunner while pools of liquid blood formed around his feet. The one chain that remained flew toward Dhriti and wrapped around the woman's left arm before reeling her back in toward the raining crystal shards...
--------
A soft groan escaped from Alice's mouth, and Foxtrot could feel there was a pulse still present with her, but it was faint. Blood was dripping down the back of Alice's head, from cracks in the skull formed from the impact...
Dhriti let out a sharp cry of pain as the razor sharp, bloody chain dug deep into her left arm and tugged her closer to Bloodless. The chain lacerated Dhriti's skin and muscle, spilling blood across the Indian woman's casual clothes and staining their front an ominous crimson. Her mind nearly fogged up from the intensity of the pain, but Dhriti remembered her training, taking a deep breath to regain her focus. As she began to lose ground to Bloodless's pull, Dhriti grabbed either side of the chain embedded into her left arm using two of her two spectral limbs and, running off of pure adrenaline, pulled with all her might, shattering the chains in her grasp.
Dhriti raised up her two unoccupied arms over her head to intercept the rain of crystalline blood shards that fell upon her head, which absorbed the majority of the impact for her, thankfully. Some still managed to get through though, and nicked her shoulders and knee, drawing more blood. Dhriti cursed to herself. Time wasn't exactly on her side now with a wound this bad, but she didn't have time to worry about that. She had to hope that Bloodless would go down, and quickly, or else they were all going to be in huge trouble.
Pressing her severely wounded arm to her chest, Dhriti took the initiative and lunged at Bloodless with shocking speed, before she unleashing a brutal assault upon the maddened vigilante. The first blow was a decisive punch to Bloodless' kidney, causing the blood-wielding vigilante to bend forward into the brutal blow. While the Super was more than capable of withstanding such a strike, the force of the blow was still enough to stagger her directly into Dhriti's second strike, planting Dhriti's manifested fist right into Bloodless' chin. The force of the vicious uppercut threw Bloodless off-balance long enough for Dhriti to make a rash move; lunging forward, Dhriti wrapped a manifested arm around Bloodless' neck, before she spun around and slammed the maddened vigilante into the earth face-first. Dhriti quickly maneuvered into a pin, holding one of Bloodless' arms behind her back with one of her manifested arms and keeping her other arm wrapped up in her legs, while keeping one arm wrapped around Bloodless' neck.
"I don't... know how long... I'm gonna be able to hold this...!" Dhriti shouted to the others, as more of her blood spilled from her wounded arm, staining part of Bloodless' clothes and skin as well. "Act fast, please!"
Upon arriving to her motel suite, Marina unlocked the door a flicked on the lights after feeling around on the wall for the switch. She let out a loud yawn and stretched her arms above her head as she walked inside. She took note of the two large beds and quickly made her way to the nearest one before throwing herself onto it. She wanted this one to herself, as she understandably didn't feel comfortable sharing a bed with two strangers. As she laid in bed, she pulled out her phone to check the time and was suddenly reminded of Celine and whatever message she got that made her so distraught. She figured now was a good a time as any to inquire about the nature of the message.
"So uh, Celine. What's going on with that message you got? You looked pretty upset? I'm sorry if I'm being nosy, I'm just curious." She said.
Roadrunner was quick to react to the incoming blood spikes, however the pools of blood forming under his feet delayed his ability to take off, and one of the blood spikes cut him across the cheek right before he gained enough stability to take off. Moving away from the pools of blood, Roadrunner hissed in pain and wiped the small trickle of blood from his cheek when he heard Dhriti's pleas for help. Roadrunner cursed and bolted towards Bloodless, shoulder checking her away from Dhriti and sending her flying into a dumpster. The dumpster crumpled from the impact like an empty soda can, trash and debris being flung into the air. Roadrunner pressed his attack, dashing over to Bloodless and grabbing her by the scruff of the neck. With a lightning fast glance at his surroundings, Roadrunner planted Bloodless's face against the brick wall of the alleyway and took off running back and fourth. Each time, he pressed Bloodless's face harder against the brick wall and carving an ever deeper trench into the brick. Finally, Roadrunner shifted his grip on Bloodless as to seize her by the arms as he began to spin around in circles, quickly building momentum. Roadrunner soon built up enough speed to create a miniature tornado of dust and debris around him, both he and Bloodless appearing as little more than a blur.
"Time to go on a joyride, darling!" said Roadrunner snidely as he released his grip on Bloodless and allowed the momentum to fling the vigilante several hundred meters away from the group. With Bloodless temporarily stalled, Roadrunner dashed over to Dhriti and placed a hand on her shoulder, examining her wounds.
"You alright, lass? You look pretty banged up" asked Roadrunner, a sense of genuine concern in his voice. He occasionally looked over his shoulder to make sure Bloodless wasn't about to sneak up on them.
The suite door opened a second time behind Marina and Celine. Blind, who had made herself scarce upon entering the motel- it generally wasn't wise to barge into a business wearing a mask- stepped inside, looking down shyly. The vigilante stood before the pair without her smart suit, or rather with the majority of it stuffed into a baggy hoodie she had quickly retrieved from a nearby cache she kept. Her features, round and tan, were immediately familiar to Marina: the 'student' who had given her the burner phone on behalf of the hero.
"Sorry," she mutters to land-strider, perhaps worried she would be angered by the deception. "I'm... private, but we need to trust each other to help each other."
The short woman moves to sit in a floral patterned sofa armchair, leaving the other bed for Celine.
"So... you can call me Donna."
Celine winced. She couldn't put it off any longer. The girl reached into her pocket and pulled back out the phone. Slowly, she forced herself to flip it open and open the last text message she had received. Then, she walked over to Marina, but stopped when Blind remanifested outside of her suit. It was only a brief moment of reprieve before the truth, and it was all Celine had to brace herself for what she feared was coming. She handed Marina the phone.
"I... I'm sorry. It's... It's about Sierra. I didn't want to tell you until we were in a place no one could eavesdrop or hear about..."
The message in question was a long text message: "Sister Celine, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Sierra is no longer with is. When I noticed her condition begin to worsen, the medical staff tried everything in their power to save her. Unfortunately, the internal blood loss and shock of her wounds has become too much. Sierra's suffering on his mortal coil has ended. I will inform Father Pius of this turn of events at once, and please tell Marina that Sierra passed away with a smile on her face, knowing that her best friend would avenge what had befallen her.
~Seisshia"
Bloodless's body ground to a halt on the far end of the alleyway. She remained motionless, her body clearly dented and bruised from the impacts against her. At first, it seemed as if Roadrunner's strikes had done the job and put her down for good. But then an arm twitched. The vigilante sunk into the ground, her body merging with the shadows in the split second between when Roadrunner was looking at Dhriti and back toward where Bloodless had once been. In this dim darkness, she could have been anywhere...
The strike came from below.
A jagged blood coated blade shot up from the shadows toward Roadrunner and cut through his left thigh. A hand reached up behind him and grabbed him by the back of the neck and clenched hard as Bloodless reformed out of the shadows. She held Roadrunner off the ground, her grip tightening as she threatened at any second to crush his neck. With her other hand, the blood forged blade shot forward toward Dhriti to skewer her where she stood. Yet as Bloodless launched the attack, she winced. Her own body was dripping with blood, and the body was becoming more sluggish, more winded as this continued.
These sinners had to perish now, before this body completely gave in!
