Frankly, if GxM had the effects of GMK, GXMG or SOS, it'd probably be one of the best entries in the entire franchise. There's so much new and unique going on with it, with the swarm of bugs, Megaguirus herself, the black hole gun, etc. It's just so poorly done that it drags the entire film down.

Not to mention the up-closeness to Godzilla, like with the opening scene Kiriko Tsujimori and later the spine-riding scene.

I think the characters weigh it down a lot too and ultimately it becomes an idea of too many ideas that don't really fit together so well.

I think GxM's narrative is just way too flimsy to ever be considered one of the best Godzilla films, even if it had the best SFX of all the films. And I say that as someone who's grown to enjoy GxM. It used to be one of my bottom five G-films. Now it's like... bottom third, but towards the middle of the lot. It's perfectly enjoyable in the right mood.

GxM used to be in my bottom 5....then the anime films came along and bumped it, G2K and Space Godzilla up.

Megaguirus is at least bold. The Kiryu films are as bold as mayo on white bread hold the pepper. Plus Megaguirus herself is a great villain and the fight at the end is engaging. You can dog the effects later on but the beginning of the film with the rocket launcher attack was pulled off perfectly imo.

Megaguirus was a test-run for the Kiryu duology, which in-turn served as an antidote for what the former failed to deliver.

GMK - top notch all around maybe a bit short (and thus too fast)
G2K - tons of fun
The Kiryu films - barely remember em but should rewatch since I'm on a MechaGodzilla kick
GxM - barely a movie, terrible effects
GFW - if histrionic personality disorder was a movie this would be it
