I’m pretty sure whilst the exact specifics of this was unknown, the final boss concept of there being one after the final match between players was a given considering all recent tourneys have had them, so this was to be expected imo. And thus the joke.

It's possible that because you're heading toward the finals, that rule no longer applies and you lose the tournament automatically upon losing. That's what happened to me at Kaiju Kolosseum although at the time I only lost twice when the rule was four.
