This isn't unpopular at all. I'm starting to think I'm the only one who likes that movie.
FW hate is much stronger here.
On TK? Yes. In the fandom as a whole? No. While the number of GFW haters may slightly outnumber the "BEST GODZILLER MOVIE EVER!!1!!!1!" crowd at this point, it's still pretty loved on other forums.

Godzilla vs Megaguirus absolutely slaps, and is a way more enjoyable experience than either of the Kiryu films.

Yay, an unpopular opinion I whole-heartedly support!

SSS9 is the only reason my older brother with watxh Godzilla vs Biollante with me. I wouldn't call him in that role cringy.
Wait, what is that supposed to prove?
That I don't consider the role cringy and my brother doesn't either. Cringy is subjective.

Yeah I guess....

But I guarantee if Godzilla vs King Ghidorah had gotten a theatrical release in this country, out of all the things the American audience would have laughed it, they probably would have targeted M-11 the most.

Is cringe subjective? Again, I guess. But the M-11 stuff is corny as fuck. I dont know many people who'd deny that. Even those who like this movie. I LOVED it when I was 13 when the movie was brand new, and even then the M-11 scenes embarrassed me.

Is this directed at me? I'm talking about the agent in Biollante. I agree M11 is comedy in an otherwise serious toned film.

I know you were talking about Biollante, but the M-11 nonsense is easier to pick on. And no, all of that stuff wasn't SUPPOSED to be funny.

I love Megaguirus herself. I have a thing for insect/arachnid kaiju, and she's by far my favorite of that category.

The movie itself... well, I'll take it over Final Wars. And half the Heisei movies.

Whether he's a good character or not, M11 is certainly memorable. I'll gladly take his cheesy ridiculousness over the cardboard mech pilots that are supposed to be main characters in half the Heisei movies.

And I love GxM. It's very flawed, but it's a lot of over the top fun and loaded with creative, ambitious action sequences.

I'm praying to Godzilla that these positive responses to GxM are a sign it's going to be reevaluated by this fandom (or at least, this forum) in the same way AMA has been.

I doubt it, especially since that re-evaluation is almost exclusively a TK phenomenon, unfortunately.

Megaguirus is a fun film, but I'd say it feels like a flashier late Heisei film. Most of the characters are only slightly deeper and more charismatic than Pteranodon man, but at least the Kaiju action is much more fun than Heisei's.

Here's my unpopular opinion: Final Wars does have some interesting story beats, especially in the first half of the film. Specifically, I think the conflict among the Xilien controllers over which method they should use to take over the Earth is a great concept, even though the idea of dissenting opinions among the Xiliens doesn't come up again after the young 'un does his coup.

I've written about the thematic consistency in Final Wars before (greatly inspired by some of Kaltes posts on the subject as well), while I don't know if I agree with all of my opinions on the film at the time of writing some of these, FW certainly has some interesting ideas it wants to put forth and does a decent job of carrying these ideas throughout the entire narrative, even if it's encapsulated in an admittedly abrasive presentation. If you're interested, I can link to my post

Is it the one in the Final Wars thread? If so, I've read it and think it's certainly an interesting perspective, one that I thought about while rewatching the film a week or so ago. It's a really good post, regardless of whether it was the filmmakers' intent and is now IMO the definitive way to critically analyze Final Wars.
If there's more than that post, please do link.

I scoped your post, and it's certainly an interesting take, Jetty! I'm not sure if I entirely subscribe, but there's definitely a throughline of generational friction going on in GFW. And I'm always down to actually look at the film like it's not total crap like a lot of people like to.
Our heroes all work together despite their ages, while the Xilien kid chooses to usurp the old ways. Never really looked at it that way before. Now I have an excuse to watch Final Wars for the three hundred billionth time!

Not to mention how the characters think and act. The Xilien elder shows wisdom and experience by using trickery against man, while the young usurper chooses force and aggression to accomplish his goal. The generational friction is demonstrated in how each approaches the same problem, but with very different results. The elders use wisdom and action, just as our heroes do, but the young Xilien ignores his lessons and pays for his arrogance.

Tokyo’s got somewhere in the ballpark of a third of Japan’s population.
Is Toho worried that most people will not be able to relate unless a movie’s set in Tokyo?

It's incredibly obvious why the Tokyo Metropolis is featured in so many Japanese films to the point that this shouldn't need to be explained.

The Godzilla films and Kaiju genre also do feature a wide variety of locale in Japan, just that people who are less familar with Japan probably don't pick up precisely where the films take place.

I doubt most people would recognize the various cities without some landmark being shown.
