Official "Ultraman Gaia" Thread

Post by Tyrant_Lizard_King »

As one of the first Ultra series I watched I have a bit of a soft spot for Gaia. It's fairly unique for the franchise in a lot of ways. The first to feature two different Ultras each with their own opposing viewpoints of how to best defend the Earth. It's also got maybe the largest cast of characters with their Attack Team XIG being composed of several smaller specialist units like the all female flight squadron (Team Crow), their search and rescue team (Team Seagull), and even a specialist ground/subterranean unit (Team Hercules). With the DVD now up for pre-order I figured now was the best time to start this thread.

Do you think that after Trigger is done, They'll do the same thing with both Dyna and Gaia that Trigger did with Tiga?

I Just finished watching Gaia. Despite a kind of odd beginning (I just thought it was kind of lackluster how Gamu met/became Gaia). It had a fairly satisfying ending. I think all 3 series (Tiga, Dyna, Gaia) ended really strong, but I'd place the endings in order of Favorites: Tiga, then Gaia, then Dyna. Again, I liked them all, but that's how I'd rank their respective ending arcs.

I also watched the post-series OVA "Gaia Again". However I learned that all 3 OVA's for Tiga, Dyna, and Gaia had longer 60 minute versions. I wonder why TPC gave MC only the 45 minute edited versions? Oh well...that's another thing I need to track down.

Also I started rewatching a couple episodes of Orb Origin, which has the most recent appearance of Gamu and Gaia. I couldn't compare before but Takeshi Yoshioka who plays Gamu has aged quickly (even though he is 3 years younger than me in real life) . Of course I'm sure people would say the same about me, looking at pics from 20 years ago.

I love seeing the actors come back. Some of them age gracefully, and others look like they've had a bit of a rough time. But I still love any time a legacy actor returns. Heck even Hiroko Sakurai ( Fuji from the original Ultraman) looks incredible for her age (75), as does Susumu Kurobe at 82.
To all you dub preservationists, my friends, you have my eternal thanks 8-) . Never stop what you do, you are amazing!

Just started watching the Millcreek set. On Episode 4 and already remembering why this has been a favorite series of mine.

Just finished the other day. What a series. The cast was great, especially with the expanded focus on the supporting cast earlier in the show. Agul/Fujimiya is a cool foil for Gaia/Gamu, and the overarching plot is really cool. The kaiju also looked really good, and Gaia's entrance drops are iconic. Would have been nice to see Daigo and Asuka in the movie but it was good as is. Overall it might actually be better than Tiga storywise!

I'm old enough to remember when this was the newest Ultra series. It was early-mid '99.

I just started watching this last week and so far, I'm not too impressed with it. Very slow start hopefully it picks up soon.

Also does anyone else have subtitle problems on the Mill Creek release. For some reason the theme song and end song aren't subbed unlike the previous Ultra releases and on top of that, I've seen very bad translations that make no sense.

I guess the only positive thing is that the show does have some cool kaiju designs, just hoping the story picks up.

This is one of the greatest Ultra shows, and a fav of mine. The episode "4,600 Million Year Ghosts" still sticks out to me in how it develops Gamu's appreciation for Gaia early on. That whole exchange between Gamu & Miku over the Earth potentially abandoning humanity is thought-provoking, where Miku believes that one day we might become ghosts like the dinosaurs. Miku does have some form of abandonment or separation anxiety, since her parents disappeared in Mongol when she was young. It's subtle, but I think it informs why she believes the Earth may abandon humanity in the future. However, enter Gamu where (depending on the subs) he asks "If the Earth were to abandon humanity, then why does Ultraman exist?".

It's the little scenes like that I really appreciate from not only Gaia, but the whole TDG trilogy. It's hard to describe, but I find this trilogy to do a stellar job in showing reasons for Ultraman to exist despite how harsh the present becomes, and how grim the future may appear.

I just finished off the last bit of Gaia last night and it improved greatly as the series progressed. I thought for sure it was going to be like Leo for me, where it had a slow start, amazing middle then just started to go back down near the end, but it stayed pretty consistent.

Of the trilogy I think I'd rank it Dyna, Tiga and then Gaia.

On to Neos next.

Why did they not bother making a next gen Gaia this time around?

Trigger, yes. Decker not so much.

This isn’t actually true. Financially, both Trigger and Decker were pretty good with Trigger having some of the best financials of any Mebius onwards Ultraman series. Secondly, according to interviews not only was a new gen Gaia never planned or intended by Tsuburaya, but Decker wasn’t even supposed to be New Gen Dyna apparently.

But yeah, critically speaking Trigger wasn’t that good (though nowhere near terrible, just mediocre, never stooping to the depths of hell that was Orb Origin Saga or Ultraseven X or the first two Heisei Ultraseven specials) and whilst Decker had a solid first half and some truly well done standout episodes it blundered its second half and missed the mark. But that’s just my opinion.
