Red Ronin(Marvel G-Foe/Ally)

Post by The One and Only »

RED RONIN(http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix2/redroninrobot.htm), the giant robot designed by Dr. Yuriko Takiguchi to combat, contain ,and/or destroy Godzilla when the King of the Monsters made his return to the Marvel Universe in the short-lived GODZILLA:King of the Monsters comic Marvel published.

The brainchild of G:KOFTM editor, Archie Goodwin, submitted to the mag's writer, Doug Moench, of the basic "Godzilla Battles Giant Robot" concept. Moench went through several names for the robot including Future Fighter and Fai-Tar, before Goodwin concieved "Red Ronin", which everyone settled on. Utilizing the word, "ronin", Japanese for a samurai without a master. Then, after some work on hashing out the robot's appearance weapontry, appearance, and method of operation with series artist, Herb Trimpe, Red Ronin became a fully fleshed out four color concept.
Hellastrong, and armed with with a variety of weapontry. A detachable sheild, that can be thrown, hit its target no matter how poorly aimed, and return to Red Ronin automatically. The sheild is also equipped with Red Ronin's most formidable weapon, a gatling laser device which stores the sun's energy. And turn it into a blade of energy which can cut through just about everthing. Magnetic field generators which provide force fields to vital areas of the robot's body. Ronin's right hand can transform into a blaster cannon which can deliver powerful blasts. Then there is the magan-clamp cables which extend from the robot's boot units, which are capable of hauling something as big, and heavy as Godzilla in flight. Which Red Ronin can achieve speeds thanks to atomic thrusters of subsonic levels. Red Ronin is controlled via a cybernetic helmet worn by the pilot, whose very thoughts basically run the robot.

And that's where the complications occured. The grandson of Dr. Takiguchi, Rob Takiguchi(who Moench named after a friend of his from high school), thought Godzilla was misunderstood, and whoever S.H.I.E.L.D. would have operate Ronin, would harm the big lug. Little Rob snuck aboard the robot, and thought thanks to his knowledge of Red Ronin's operating, he'd have no problem running his grandad's invention. Wrong. His first atempt sent a feedback loop through the helmet which knocked out Rob. And to make matters worse, when Red Ronin was needed to stop the Big-G's rampage at a nuclear missle base. The accident made it so that only Rob's distinct brain patterns would enable the lad to operate the robot. So when Takiguchi snuck aboard Ronin again, and put on the helmet, Red Ronin was ready for action this time, and Rob had managed to prevent disaster, but let Godzilla go on his merry way in the end. Red Ronin and Rob helped the Big-G twice more after their initial encounter. First against the massive, mutant hominid, Yetrigar, then next against a trio of monsters sent by the alien warlords of the planet Mega. It was during this battle that Ronin's head was lobbed off while fighting the Mega-Monster Rhinan.

Red Ronin wasn't done after this defeat. Taken back to Stark International and repaired. Red Ronin ended up being used by one of the scientists working on it, Dr. Earl Cowan, in an attempt to start World War 3. But was stopped by the Avengers. Later Ronin ended up doing battle with the Wasp, and after that Wolverine and Sunfire when the Hand seized control of the robot. Ronin was later used by the U.S. government to lure out the Avengers into a trap by the Thunderbolts. Then by the criminal Zodiac to cause havoc in order to undermine Norman Osborn when the latter was made the nation's top cop in charge of superhumans. Two other realities Red Ronin poped up in. One was in a reality where Red Ronin was designed by Dr. Bolivar Trask, as the chief weapon of a team of monster hunters called the Science Squad. But ended up getting trashed by that Earth's Fin Fang Foom.

On another Earth, Red Ronin ended up becoming a pawn of Dr. Octopus, and Doctor Doom in the second and third issues of the toy tie in series, MEGA-MORPHS.Image
Like Godzilla's other Marvel foe, Dr. Demonicus, Red Ronin found a life after Marvel's Godzilla series ended. In fact, according to the letters page in SHOGUN WARRIORS, the popularity of Ronin in Marvel's G-Mag, lead to the House of Ideas going for the rights to the SHOGUN WARRIORS, and giving the robots their own series. If the Shogun book had done better ,and continued, I thought Red Ronin would've inevitatbly put in an appearance in that book as well. Perhaps S.H.EI.L.D. dispatching the robot to apprehend Raydeen, Combatra, and Dangard Ace for their extra-legal activities. And then letting them go realizing it was better for the Warriors to be free agents by Ronin's new pilot, and S.H.E.I.L.D's own resident Godzilla simpathizer, late Gabriel Jones.

I had no clue Red Ronin ever returned, this is all very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.
