Limit Politics

Post by Omegazilla »

When I first joined if I am not mistaken politics was outright banned in any way, shape, or form. If I am wrong please correct me in this regard because my activity on this site is very intermittent and most of it has been lurking over the years especially given that you had to be a certain age to make an account. Anyways to get back on point, this ban on politics appears to have been completely reverted. Now I am not necessarily for returning to an outright ban like before, but I do think it should be limited. Especially nowadays these are very heated topics. While there are certainly a lot of people recycling generic talking points thinking they are experts as a result, I am sure there are also many that follow that kind of stuff closely (and may even work in the field) and feel passionately about it. So I am not saying they shouldn't be discussed at all like before, but definitely limited to off topic boards only or at the most very quickly on main topic boards if only to make a quick point. Political discussions are very prone to going off topic really fast. To put it simply I will say this. I think the ideal balance is to ban (or at least keep restricted) politics in on-topic discussion boards, but keep them unlimited in the off-topic area so long as other rules are followed. I am curious as to when this was reverted though. I am guessing during the latter half of 2016 if I had to make an educated guess.

Something like this is probably better served as a private conversation with myself or another administrator. I would imagine a thread about this would, itself, become toxic and off-topic.

I guess I'd need examples of what exactly you're referring to. Because what I'm getting here is politics are coming up in other topics (let's say KOTM, Ultraman, or NECA conversations) and you believe this shouldn't be, and they should be contained only to the Politics and News threads? Correct me if I'm wrong about that.

While I'm not omnipresent, for the most part I haven't seen that. Covid has affected theaters, so I could see something coming up in the threads involving new releases. Same with figure release chats, I suppose. But most of the actual political discussion has been in the General area, which I think is reasonable. And, astoundingly, for the most part has remained civil. I say for the most part, because there have absolutely been moments where it hasn't.

I don't remember political discussion being banned, but, I'm not going to swear on that. I can bring this up with the rest of the staff. But I, personally, don't really like the idea of making something like mentioning or discussing politics outside of the political chat something worthy of a warning. It doesn't sit right with me. But, as I said, I'll see what they say.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. To clarify, yes, I was basically saying I would think it is best to limit or regulate the discussion of politics on the on-topic boards. I know it is not technically a violation of the rules as they are now, but I was suggesting that perhaps it should because there is a mass potential for spiraling out of control due to the volatility of the topics therein. I know the rules are up to the administrators in the end and they may not agree with me on this, but I do appreciate considering my input about it. I won't go further than this and will PM you about this matter as you suggested to go in more detail if you feel that is necessary. Thanks.

My own two cents:

Sorry, but the Godzilla films and most media in general has some connection to politics, and inherently have political messages. I sort of agree that in certain circumstances “hi-jacking a thread” to talk politics would be irrelevant and off topic, but I doubt there’s any major examples of that happening.

If you don’t like some of the political threads then just don’t view them. Because of current circumstances, avoiding talking about some of these political issues is inherently difficult as they effect everyone.

I would second the original post in some respects. At the Bad Movie Message Board, discussions politics and religion were banned. A single exception was made by the Mods for a user review of "Religuous" in which a respectful discussion was taking place. And even then, when there started to be a lot of "Agree to Disagree" posts, the Mods stepped in an ended the conversation.

I would suggest banning political and religious discussion that isn't directly involved with a specific movie (eg. Shin Godzilla and Japanese nationalism). That would include the specific threads devoted to those topics. Godzilla fans can come in the form of Republicans, Democrats, Green Party people, Libertarians, Independents, Socialists, Capitalists, Peace and Freedom Party Types, Constitution Party adherents, Liberty Union People, etc. (plus their equivalents in all the other countries represented on the forum). They can be Catholics, Protestants, Atheists, Agnostics, Non-Denomination Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Zoroastrians, etc. Let's avoid *anything* that might alienate anyone and make the forum, for the most part, apolitical and whatnot.

Banning speech in any way, shape or form is totally not cool.

Hell yeah. If it makes anyone uncomfortable too bad. How else are people going to get over differences in opinions. I agree certain threads don't need to talk about politics and religion but it does come up for one reason or another. Outright banning that is wrong as long as they be civil it's cool. But the moment it goes off the rails mods should step in and stop it from getting out of hand I can agree with that. Others shouldn't report someone over this or tell anyone to get off the subject as long as its part of the topic and civil. Leave the thread if you don't like it chances are they aren't too overldrawn out and it gets back on it's own.

Considering the original post is written by the same lunatic who keeps making alternate accounts for the purposes of posting pictures of human corpses and gore, I don't think you should be seconding anything. OP is a proven psychopath, and this thread should be locked.

Why should it be locked?

Because, as he said, the original post was from a deranged lunatic who has sent dead fetuses, beheaded corpses, and miscellaneous violent gore to staff and users. He is the sole reason we have an entire new system in place for new users.

I have no intention of blocking or banning political discussion any time soon. As with anything else, as long as it remains civil, it's fine. So this thread serves no purpose. Locked.
