Terror of Mechagodzilla UPA Cut HD G-MAN Reconstruction "Now Available"

Post by G-MAN »

So after going back and forth with myself on what my next reconstruction would be I finally decided on what I wanted to make. Which of course you guys would know from the name of this thread.

Jumping the gun a little bit as i haven't started working on this reconstruction yet. But I've got everything ripped aside from the films needed from the Criterion set blurays. Which won't take too long. But I plan on starting in full this weekend. Hoping it won't take too long as it's not as intensive of an edit as some of my previous reconstructions. As the main bulk of what needs to be done is the UPA intro. Everything else is minor compared to that for me in terms of editing.

I will be of course using the Classic Media disc as a template of how to reconstruct it. I'll also most likely be using the English title of the film from that release And give it my usual treatment unless there is a better source. Or if I'm able to recreate it using the Criterion source. And of course I will be using the audio from that opening for that sequence as well. The video sources will of course be taken from the Criterion releases of Invasion of Astro Monster, All Monsters Attack, and of course Terror of Mechagodzilla.

I don't have any sort of exact date in mind for this release especially given my work schedule. But I will try to have it out sometime before the middle of March. Though that's just at the latest. Hope everyone will enjoy it once it's finished. And will continue to provide more updates when I start progressing on it. Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions/ideas in.the meantime.

*UPDATE*
The film has been completed and is now uploaded any ready to shared.

Sources used are as follows.

Video
The main source was of course the Criterion release of Terror of Mechagodzilla. As well as their release of All Monsters Attack and Invasion of Astro Monster. With the one Standard Definition element being the brief English Titles shot from the Classic Media release. Mainly due to the compression not being as bad as other sources I've seen for it.

For this first release I tried to be as accurate as possible to the presentation on the Classic Media release of the film. And by that for the English credits I adjusted the colors a bit to reflect how the still frame credit shots looked. And while the font used main not be exactly the same I tried to use one that matched fairly well.

I also added the English The End back into the film.

Audio
Was again mainly taken from the Criterion release of Terror of Mechagodzilla with the prologue being sourced from the Classic Media DVD.

It was really fun tackling this reconstruction. And I hope everyone interested in it enjoys how it turned out. Feel free to comment or pm for the link and I look forward to hearing what everyone thought of it.

Looking forward to this one too! It was quite the rarity during the 90's when I first heard of it.

Awesome! I intended to do a reconstruction myself once I was done with Biollante, but now that me and RedMenace are working on the 1985 4K Restoration, we're a bit busy, so I'm glad you did it so I didn't have to!

Well I hope your Biollante work has been going well. And very curious to hear how 85 is progressing. And hope you guys release a grindhouse version of the film in full 1080p and 4k so we can have a full version before all the clean up is done like with all the star wars print level restorations. Not to mention so us fans can get a nice preview of what's to come.

Do the original international English theatrical opening credits exist in decent quality anywhere? I remember seeing them in an ancient YouTube upload but it’s long gone...

For this reconstruction, I know the plastic breasts were originally cut out of the UPA version, but it would be great if you could leave them in anyway...?

Not sure myself but since it's just text over the freeze frame I will be trying my best to recreate those.
And as for the second one. Probably not as I did think about leaving it in. Though I'm trying to be as faithful to the UPA version as possible, so it might not. I'm also going to be adding the THE END bit at the end but do it a but earlier before the Japanese credits come in as that was just an addition by classic media since the main film was taken from the Toho R2 dvd master I believe.

As for updates I've been slow do to heavy work schedule but I'm more than have way through the bulk of the editing of the prologue. And it's coming along nicely. Just interesting seeing how the u.s. editor(s) decided the order of the scenes and footage from Monster Zero and Godzilla's Revenge.

Prologue and recreation of the titles during the film's actual prologue have been completed. The rest of the work is just editing the one scene out of the film and adding the ending titles. Still a bit more to do. But the main thing is finally finished.

Alright everything seems good to go in terms of how the editing turned out. Going to of course double check and make sure. Then next will just be making sure it's bluray comparable. Then lastly once it's uploaded I will edit the original post. So hopefully if my internet and laptop are willing it should be good to go early to mid next week. As long as no issues appear during my viewing of the finished film.

Cannot wait for everyone to check it out. As I'm pretty pleased with how the prologue turned out.

Done watching. Great job. The bulk of the movie doesn't have the Criterion tape splice between cuts. I have not watched my Criterion version yet. Was it much better then the rest? Once again, great job!
