Thoughts on the unmade GODZILLA (1994)

Post by M.U.T.O. »

Upon reading the script, which I'm linking below, I'm simply taken aback by how easy it is to envision. It's a great Godzilla film, and I think it's a shame Emmerich and Devlin thought it was a story they didn't want to have told. Sure, a few changes could've been made (such as the origin story), but overall it's a good screenplay! What're your views on the unmade movie? Favorite scenes?

Here's the Script for the Unmade Film

To start off, I'm going to say that this is some pretty dark foreshadowing.
EXT. WORLD TRADE TOWERS - DAY

The Gryphon spots Godzilla, between the Twin Towers. Scowls,
realizes: it is Godzilla's reflection in the north tower. The
Gryphon banks around, swoops down, toward the image--

--then turns, lashes out at the Godzilla near the south tower,
smashing it--
Except that's a reflection, too. During the Gryphon's bank
turn, Godzilla moved to the other side. Godzilla springs at the
Gryphon, teeth and claws tearing into its wings.

The Gryphon throws itself backwards, smashing Godzilla against
the Tower. They flail violently, crushing and destroy the
Tower's base.

EXT. GOVERNOR'S ISLAND - DAY

In the distance, dust rises from the World Trade Center. One of
the towers leans over dangerously. The monitors show helicopter
views of the battle. Benedek, Fleer and Pike are ashen.

				BENEDEK
Can even Godzilla beat that thing?

				FLEER
		 Don't be defeatist...

				AARON
			 (to himself)
Why isn't he using his fire?

He stares at the monitors, trying to figure it out.

EXT. MANHATTAN - SKY - DAY

The Gryphon pulls itself into the air. Godzilla makes a leaping
snap for its legs--catches them, hauls the Gryphon down.

The Gryphon reverses its momentum suddenly, sending both
monsters hard into the dangerously leaning tower.

EXT. MANHATTAN - DAY

ON JILL AND TINA. They look up as--
The TOWER COLLAPSES--

The ground shakes beneath their feet. Loose masonry crashes
down around them--

EXT. GOVERNOR'S ISLAND - DAY

The observers are aghast--a dust cloud rises from the city, the
skyline now absent one-half of the World Trade Center.

And then the Gryphon appears, flying shakily, still aloft.

I only read a couple pages, but I can see this could be a great start to an american reboot series. I wish Emmerich and his team never got his hands on it...... (it being Godzilla)

Maybe Minilla was some mutation inside a Kamacarus' ootheca and that's why they attacked..... Maybe Minilla ISN'T the Son of Godzilla! He's some weird Kamacari that Godzilla felt bad for!

..... Nope, the other guys would never accept that..........

But if they never did, we would have not gotten Godzilla (2014).

Still, this film has potential if we want to reboot the franchise yet again. No, wait! Even a fan-film using this screenplay would probably knead the dough.

Similar elements, but not quite.

OOOO you're right...... I think this would be much worse than G14, in fact unless Godzilla 2 (I hope they come up with a better name....) is better than the first, and same goes for Godzilla 3, G14 may be my 2nd favorite Godzilla movie

That would not make a difference.

Actually Toho themselves are ultimately to blame since they wanted it only to be made if it had one of their monsters, in which Tristar couldn't afford to license. So they decided to have the script scrapped altogether.

Godzillas origin in this film is very similar to Gameras in his heisei films.

This is my biggest problem with the script. Godzilla would have looked cool but cutting out his nuclear origins is a HUGE mistake to me, and completely strips the character of his meaning. Its like making a Batman film where Bruce Wayne's parents never died. That's one thing G98 did right was his origins but it also signifies the difference between these two scripts. This script was an adaptation of the Godzilla series as a whole, and the 98 one was a remake of Gojira only.

This will always be the great Godzilla film that never was. We are left only with imagination and speculation based on the script, but man, it looked great and will forever be a missed project. Not to mention is almost certainly would have blown GINO out of the water.

^and then we would possibly not get Godzilla 2000 or the rest of the Millennium. One of the reasons G2000 was made was because of the failure of GODZILLA

Though this would of been a great movie, if made. I always thought the origin of Godzilla sounded kind of cheesy. Really? Created by aliens that came to earth over 65 million years ago by mixing various dinosaur species together such as T-Rex and Stegosaurus.....Sounds like something a 5 year old would make up. That and cutting out Godzilla's nuclear origin wouldn't sound right.

^Ok didn't read that far. That's ridiculous. I don't mind the dinosaur thing, it's the ALIENS. It sounds interesting, but on the big screen it would look horrible (unless handled correctly)

I agree. That and like I said. Cutting out Godzilla's nuclear origin would of been an insult to be honest. I mean at least in GODZILLA (1998) they kept the nuclear origin in it, despite "God"zilla being a mutant marine iguana.....

^Ok which is more appealing, a mutant dinosaur, or a mutant iguana? I think BOTH ideas are insults, even if they kept the nuclear origin. In Godzilla 2014 they kept his origin intact, and even came up with a new theory based on the original by Dr. Yamane. Seriously, the aliens would have RUINED the movie.

Actually the creators of Godzilla in the flick weren't aliens, they were the previous inhabitants of Earth. It bothered me a little when I first read about how Godzilla came to be created, but it grew on me after awhile. It's just another take on the Monster King. Some twitchy fans don't even like having Godzilla be a mutant, even having him a dinosaurian that lived in the "Fire Age" of the Earth's prehistory. They'd rather keep his origins ambiguous, a mystery.

Besides getting my latest issue of G-FAN today. This flick would've probably done quite well, pleased the general audience, and even got a sequel or two. However, looking at the reviews for the Legendary version, and the nitpicks over that effort, it looks like a lot of fellow G-Fans would still find a lot of fault with the American take on the Big-G.

Really? :eh:

I read that it was aliens. Guess, maybe I was wrong. Thanks for correcting me.
