1. I always liked this film just because I found it entertaining, simple as that. It's popcorn entertainment at its best for me. On another plus I always found it unique that, in the final battle; it was more or less the only time I can think of where you had Godzilla and a Mecha 'teaming up'. All the other times I recall seeing a mecha teaming up with a biological monster its always against Big G (Tokyo S.O.S., ToM) and for some reason I liked that. Yes Godzilla did wreck MOGUERA (my favorite Mecha, I have weird tastes) in the end, but for the rest it was just entertaining. Spacegodzilla also, despite having by GOD the WORST name I've ever seen for a kaiju; had some pretty cool tricks and powers.
2. One word, tone. The darker atmosphere, music, and quasi-creepy visuals (Biollante's rose form in the fog covered lake) set a much darker tone than I've seen in most Godzilla movies, or even most Kaiju movies in general. Biollante had a pretty unique design and despite her fights with Godzilla more or less just being Beam Spam '89, it was nice to watch. The movie took itself seriously, and I love it for that.
3. Ditto for #2, and a case of casting brilliance for me on the part of bringing Raymond Burr back. One thing that just BARELY lowered it next to its direct sequel was lack of monster co-star to fight. The Super-X was a good addition though.
4. Mothra was always one of my favorites, so to see both her back and co-staring alongside newcomer Battra was a treat; even if she looked like a chicken-footed plushie. I almost see this movie as more of a precedent to the 'Rebirth of Mothra' series, as it seems like Godzilla is a co-star while Mothra and Battra have the spotlight; sorta like how the Rebirth villains were. Heck, maybe that's why it has an 'And' in the title and not a Vs/X/Against; one could consider it just as much of a Mothra film as a Godzilla film
5. Godzilla died. Need I say more? Yah some scenes were kinda goofy, but the callbacks to the first movie I think really helped to cement this as the end of the series like it was intended to be. As a little kid staying up with the little TV in my room late night on SciFi, Destroyah's smaller forms actually scared the heck out of me and I was actually afraid to watch some parts until I was around 11.
6. I'm weird ok? I hear alot of people say they like MG '73 or Kiryu best, but for some VERY weird reason I prefer the 90s Mechagodzilla. I have no clue why because I fully admit the former looked 'meaner' and Kiryu has the best design. I just, like 90s. Rodan's design was very good too, actually making him look alot like a pteranodon.
7. I just.... never really loved this movie like the others. I like it! No doubt, I'd pick it over some of my more hated films (Revenge, Smog Monster, etc.) ANYDAY of the week. The monster designs weren't bad at all, Mecha Ghidorah was a nice addition; and it was cool to see Big G's origins. That said though, it might be exactly that last reason I didn't care as much for the film. The first movie just kept so much mystery to what exactly and where exactly Godzilla came from that I could speculate for hours about it when I was little. I guess this film 'took the magic away' from the mystery a bit too much for my taste.

Godzilla vs Biollante
Godzilla 1985
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth
Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla
The first three are really the best by far IMO, and what's more Biollante and G85 stand well ahead of Destoroyah.

Re: Hesiei Godzilla film favorites from greatest to least!
To me, the effects went downhill after Biollante and got a little better in Destroyah but not much. I feel like the creatures and a lot of the monster scenes in this era looked more fake than the Showa era. For example, I dislike how all the flying characters just sort of hover around like a kite or something, you get no feeling that Mothra or Rodan or the likes are actually flying. There wasn't much movement to these characters in the Showa era either but the filmmakers were able to get past that better. I think the Showa era really benefited from having the big monster scenes often take place in more natural settings and not the cities so the sets felt less like sets. A lot of the city sets from '91 on through the Millennium series just felt like a soundstage and not a really city. I feel like the city sets in '84 and Biollante were great, you felt like Godzilla was in a real city. I can't quite articulate the traits that make the difference, it's just a feeling I get watching them. Same with the suits, '84 and '89 Godzilla look like a real creature to me but from '91 on, he started looking more like a rubber costume instead of skin. That said, Destroyah features one of my most favorite Godzilla images ever, when Jr. is revealed at the very end with the spotlight coming from behind him, the silhouette just looks awesome.

Re: Hesiei Godzilla film favorites from greatest to least!
depending on the day of the week, Ghidorah is my favorite movie in the franchise. other days it's biollante, and 84 is in my top ten with ease (sits at #6 usually). MG2 also makes it in there either in the top 5 or 10, but that's because it's such a fun film.20th Century Boy wrote:Having recently seen some Heisei movies over the past two months, I can update my list:

i'd say my list by comparison to yours is similar but tweaked (obviously)
biollante
ghidorah
MG2/84 (tie, but if i must choose it would be MG2 by the skin of mechaG's teeth).
destroyah
the last two don't matter.
