Guide to Toho Film/TV Distributors

Post by Tohosaurus »

This thread is designed to show which companies have the distribution rights to each Toho film/series in the region A/1 market. Information is not provided on streaming services or digital purchases/rentals. The thread originally covered live-action movies Toho-produced or co-productions wherein Toho was involved in producing, but some animated content has been added. Toho-distributed-only content is not covered, nor is most TV. For more popular titles there is a listing for them even if they're not in print just so people know what the status is as far as we fans know. If you have any further questions about a specific title or the like, please post in this thread and someone should try to assist you.

Any help and corrections are appreciated!

The accuracy of this information cannot be guaranteed and is provided for general reference purposes only. For serious inquiries, please contact the distribution company in your DVD or Blu-ray region for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

I've updated it with the titles for which Sony has the theatrical rights, because thanks to kpa we do know some (or all?) of the titles Sony has such rights to, but that covers few films on this list. Anyone else that gets additional information wins my gratitude, lol.

Yo! There is no Criterion GRA boxset.
This is why you don't put stupids in charge of such important threads.

On serious note with the new stuff on its way I will need to update some of this.

Matango is in print, I just checked Amazon, while Frankenstein Conquers the World is only available new from other distributors via Amazon.

Gunhed has one left in stock, as does Atragon. Varan (1962) is in print as a single feature.

Hope this helped.

The 4-pack Sci-Fi Classics that includes Mothra is out, I picked it up from Half Price Books yesterday.

Plus, there's Blu-Ray and DVD 2-Packs from Sony for:

-Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth
-Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II/Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
-Godzilla vs. Destoroyah/Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
-Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S./Godzilla: Final Wars

Plus, we have Godzilla vs. Biollante coming soon.
Updated, except for Biollante. Something new is coming out? It's been on DVD/Blu for some time now in multiple forms.
GvBiollante is OOP in all forms, but I haven't heard any updates on who has the rights for it now, let alone a new release.

You make it sound like the Criterion BD of Godzilla doesn't have King of the Monsters too. It does. I haven't watched it yet (this weekend probably), but it's mentioned on the box and it's on the menu.

And it is. The wording in the OP is a bit long-winded but it's very clear.

Tri-Star has Son of Godzilla in print on DVD since 2004, as does Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla. They're both available, I have 'em on DVD!

"Very clear" is an overstatement, though after reading it a few more times, I see what you mean. Sorry about that, just trying to help make things better. Still wrong though.
Godzilla (1954) - Held by Classic Media, also sub-licensed by Criterion. Currently believed to be in print with Godzilla/Godzilla, King of the Monsters from Criterion on DVD, the Godzilla version alone on Blu-ray, or both versions on DVD in the Criterion DVD box set entitled "The Godzilla Collection"; Godzilla/Godzilla, King of the Monsters from Criterion DVD or Blu-ray). Godzilla, King of the Monsters version of the film from Classic Media is available on Netflix Instant.
Should be "Classic Media" not "Criterion" on "The Godzilla Collection" and (to clarify what had confused me and may trip of others), I'd say "the Godzilla version alone on Classic Media's Gojira Blu-ray" to separate it both by manufacturer and title used on the cover from the Criterion version.

Yamato Takeru (1994)'s American rights are owned by Section 23, who released it on DVD in 2005...it's in Amazon.

We're updated.

The DVD was an ADV release; it's also listed as such on the main site. I also recall a discussion with kpa on YT and Gunhed, and I believe that was also in regards to ADV's holding of both films.
Starsteam wrote: GvBiollante is OOP in all forms, but I haven't heard any updates on who has the rights for it now, let alone a new release.
On that subject, these statements from from kpa's posts in the Biollante home media thread:
kpa wrote: Miramax owns the North American rights to BIOLLANTE because they licensed the film from Toho. Miramax made home video distribution deals with Lionsgate and Echo Bridge to release Miramax's movies on DVD and Blu-ray. If the Echo Bridge agreement has expired that just means Echo Bridge will no longer be manufacturing and distributing the Miramax titles they've been handling for the past few years. That would have zero impact on Miramax's rights to BIOLLANTE; the licensing deal with Toho is a separate matter.
So Miramax themselves still have the rights to Biollante. Until when I am not sure.

*sigh*
Listen, just because you have it doesn't mean they are in print. They are out of print. Look online at he inflated prices. And you cant find these releases in stores. They are available from scalpers and people who are selling their own DVDs.
I own the GvsMG dvd myself. But I took it for granted everytime I went to Specs and saw about two or three copies this year. I said, "Eh, I got that one already." I live in Puerto Rico so the G fandom is very small here, hell, the G2014 flick lasted only in the theaters 3 weeks here. Anyway, my point is that new copies exist of the Sony DVDs. Unfortunately, Specs closed out so I have to look another part of the island for those DVDs. Somewhere in a town or city that don't give a fuck about Godzilla has unwrapped new copies of those Sony DVDs.
