"Finally showed up, huh, Trot?"

She spoke huffily, mouth curled down into a frown, but her eyes smiled. "And I always look fine, you know that."

She also tilted her head at the distant booms. "And yeah, no kidding. Martin would have me on my ass for being out here and not on the streets if he weren't busy babysitting Supercell. I was gonna ask you to vet a new vigilante, make sure we don't have another Bloodless on our hands, but we need you more... well, basically everywhere else."

Vee fished her phone from her pocket. Several texts from someone nicknamed Miss Grumpy Pants were displayed on the lock screen. The profile picture was a suggestive looking peach emoji.

"MacCleary has been yelling at me about the latest shitshow: a big disturbance at GenTech."

Worry seeps into her hard-edged voice. "That's a real heavy traffic area. If something bad is going down there, a lot of people could be hurt. Or worse."
"GenTech, huh?" the woman hummed. "Always thought those fuckers were shady. Maybe this time we can get some dirt on them."

She reached down to grab a small flask from her belt, uncorking it and taking a quick swig. "I'll try to intercept the problem if your team can handle evacuations. Got any info on what I'll be up against? A chemical leak? A bad guy?"

"Oh!" She raised a finger, as if remembering something. "And the name of the new vigilante? I can keep an eye out for them when time permits."

Though Blind was paralyzed at the sight of the twisted thing walking through the foam barrier, unsure what she had seen and how to deal with it, her body relaxed as lunged at it. It was trying to pin her.

She knew how to counter a pin.

Stowing one of her sidearm, the one that flung foam, the crimefighter tilted back on her heels and readied herself. As the heavy limb caught her in the chest, Blind wrapped her arms around it and arched her back, hitting the ground with her shoulders and swinging her legs up and over the beast's arm, rotating around it and reversing the pin. At pointblank range, she leveled her remaining sidepiece on its wrist and fired, pinning it tight to the ground in a steel cage. She was not sure if it would be any more effective than the foam had been, but more data was always good, especially against something as strange and terrifying as this foe.

Not willing to put her body on the line for additional information however, she released the arm and rolled away, trying to reach a safe distance in case the beast simply ignored its bindings again.

The small man swing fruitlessly at her as she drew closer to him.

"I'll get you for this if that thing doesn't!"

"S- Slim, don't make either of them mad!"

Part of the mayor's prerecorded message was drowned out by a gunshot, and the resulting explosion of concrete just a few inches from White Claw.

"Crap!" the wolf-headed woman whooped. "Sorry, Somsak, I was aiming for the glass. The hag made me jump."

Holstering her hand cannon, the giant stomped forward, peering at where her stray shot had landed. Only a few inches of the barrier had been bored through.

"That paranoid old crow really pulled out all the stops for this one, huh? But they gotta have a place to feed 'em, right?"

"Sorry, Trot," the policewoman sighed. "I don't have anything for you there. From what MacCleary tells me, investigations just started. Initial reports say an explosion, but you know how it goes here."

Vee pulled a photograph from her breast pocket, offering it to the masked woman. On it, a stout, costumed figured stared out, face completely hidden by both a full cowl and a dark visor.

"And the new girl calls herself 'Blind.' Well, I think it's a girl. No ID yet, but those look like tits to me. First sighting is from five years ago, but it's all sporadic after that. She only got busy a few months ago. I was gonna suggest taking a look around the construction in the Diamond Ring for her. We found a busted up smuggling route there last week, and it doesn't look like the work of anyone we know."

Taking the photograph from Vee's hand, Foxtrot looked at the image of 'Blind' for a moment, then neatly folded it and stored the photograph in a pocket beneath her belt.

"I'll hurry over to GenTech and see what I can do," she said, glancing up at the bricks forming the side of a small building as she began to calculate a route up the wall. "Want the two-way radio to keep in touch? I can relay whatever I find back to you."

The clinic was on the border of the lower residential area of Los Diamantes and the higher quality ring. It was a moderately sized complex of buildings, ivory white with a sign on the front that said "Los Diamantes Medical Center and Clinic." Tot he side were a different set of buildings, less ornate and more plain wood and only a story high as opposed to the three story complex that made up the clinic. Before this building was another sign: "Los Diamantes Daycare Center." Street lights shone down before both sets of buildings, but within the lights were cameras that kept a close eye on all that came to and from.

In the daycare, one might have expected for noise and chaos to reign supreme, but that was not the case. Instead, all thirty children, of ages between six and nine, were all seated on the blankets laid out on the floor as the daycare lady sat in her rocking chair. She had short blonde hair and light blue eyes, and wore a tight black and white suit one would expect to see on a man off to office business than on a daycare woman. Her left hand had a gauntlet, thin and metallic, and as she turned the pages of her book with her right hand, her left would twitch, slowly and methodically, and make the strings attached to her fingers move just as she wanted. Several small dolls dressed like fairies moved around the room by her control, folding up blankets and adjusting the lights and cleaning up spilled messes on the ground.

"All hope seemed lost for the heroes. The cruel woman had summoned her deity to avenge her, and the heroes were spent and weak." The daycare woman turned the page. " All five of the deity's heads were ready to eat the heroes, but then they turned to the woman who had summoned it, and let a devilish grin spread on their faces. The woman was confused. Was this not her deity? The five headed god transformed into a dog headed beast, and the woman had only enough time to scream as she was eaten!"

The children gasped. The daycare lady smiled, then turned the page again.

"With the one who had summoned it no longer there, the dog left the heroes be. They had accomplished their mission, to avenge the death of their loved ones, and with peace returned to the small town, they parted ways. The dwarf continued her family business as a blacksmith, and the druid went off on her own. The necromancer who had once plagued the town as a spectre now vowed to protect it as a guardian..."

"And what of the Duskblade?" A child asked. "What about her?"

The daycare lady closed the book and reached a hand over to the child. She patted his soft brown hair. "She went to continue the legacy her mother and father had started, and spread good tidings and aid to those who needed it, like you."

A clap from the back of the room brought everyone's attention to the entrance of the daycare. There stood Heng, still in her labcoat and thick sunglasses, and a half smile on her face. "How touching. You can read a book as good as you can control your puppets, Puppeteer."

"Just call me Alice, Heng." The daycare lady shook her head. "And don't give the children the wrong idea."

"What idea?" Heng tilted her head. "Everyone knows you're a hero here. What other implication could there be? Ah, but that does remind me, there's some... bad things happening around the city, just to let you know."

"I am sure Supercell and the police can handle it." Alice replied to Heng. " Right now, I'm just keeping these children company and keeping them safe. Snack time is now, since we finished our story."

All the children rushed to her, and it was only thanks to her dolls that Alice was able to keep from being knocked off her chair by them.

"Oh, but of course. I just wanted to let you know as a warning. Fires in GenTech, the aquarium being robbed, Supercell fighting a villain at his big speech-"

"Heng, not infront of the kids." Alice's voice dropped. "I don't want to scare them or make them worry. It will be alright. I promise you all."

Heng's cheeks puffed. "If you insist. And Alice, make sure to lock the doors once all the kids are picked up. I'd rather not come back and have my immaculate self have to worry about someone sneaking in here unanounced. I have some research to continue with, and I think Tenmus is trying to call me."

"That old crane?" Alice rolled her eyes. "If she wants me, tell her I'm busy."

“Aileen, it’s you. You seem to be safe.” Callous leaned against a wall, obscuring himself behind a dumpster. “That would be lovely, although, I might want to get involved myself. We haven’t gone on a duo mission in ages.” Peaking out, the way was clear. “You’re capable and powerful in your own right, but I think that if I aid you, the mission has a better chance of not being compromised. Send me your coordinates.”

Shutting off his communicator, Callous knelt and close his eyes. Visions of death, destruction and harm flooded through his mind, his eyes flickering back and forth under his eyelids. Jolting back up, he unbuckled his blade and began to make his way out of the dinghy streets. Octavian felt fear in the air. Felt great pain and agony. A collision of power. Figures across LD were crossing paths. Something a self-proclaimed mastermind shouldn’t miss out on.

Whatever it was, the glory of the Callous Dynasty would be reclaimed and his arms would cradle Los Diamates in a tight grip. His thoughts were interrupted however, by a buzz on his belt. His communicator displayed various numbers; the coordinates. Twisting to his left, Callous made a b-line for a famous location in the city. A Clinic of one Heng Yi.

As Octavian commandeered a street side car, he murmured to himself “I’ve got so much to do. That Supercell bastard shenanigan, Aileen’s mission, and the great ripples in the air. All this trouble better worth it.”

"Well, show me where the explosive went off, anyway," Supercell cut in, turning to face the new arrival. "I don't know how you got past the police line, sir-" he paused, glancing over to where a single harried-looking officer was trying to manage a hundred or more onlookers, the others having gone to assist the paramedics. "-Uh, and I appreciate the observation, that's useful, but this is a job for professionals. There could still be danger. Not much, obviously, I have everything under control, but... well, I have everything under control. Civilians need to stay out of the crime scene and let me work." He gestured toward the crowd, making it clear that it was time for the man to go.

Outside of Franklin and Marina's apartment, the unmarked white van with Kruger and his team slowed down and parked next to the curb across the street. The driver and passengers exited first, then the back doors of the van opened and the remainder of the team, Kruger included, exited. The mercs jogged up to the apartment door and opened it, jogging in single-file formation. It was a short walk down the hall where their apartment was. The number "209" was carved into the wooden door and gilded with brass. One of the men removed a small black box from his utility belt and placed it on the lock of the door. Flicking a switch and then pressing a button, a digital screen appeared on the front with a 10 second countdown initiating. The men backed away from the door as the timer counted down until there was a loud BANG. Dust and wood splinters shot out from the destroyed doorlock, and the merc closest to the doorway kicked down the door and aimed his rifle forward. As he entered, the rest of the squad entered the apartment with their rifles aimed and ready to fire at anything that moved.

The squad split up to cover every room in the house. The living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and all closets were checked, but there was no sign of their target. Regrouping in the living room, it soon became clear that their target wasn't here. Kruger looked visibly angry and disappointed at the turn of events. One of the mercs noted that someone was definitely here recently, as there were signs that someone had left in a hurry.

"Damn it. Looks like we just missed her." Kruger spat.

He wasn't looking forward to Mill's nagging over the phone about being unable to find and interrogate the target. Just before he could make the call, he spotted something laying on a pile of books that immediately caught his attention. He reached down and picked it up, revealing it to be an ID card for the Diamond Ring University, belonging to a one Marina Griffin. On the right hand side of the card was a picture of their quarry, and a recent one at that. A sinister grin spread across Kruger's face: he'd just struck gold.

"Boys, pack it up. I think I know where to find our girl" He said while staring at the photograph on the ID card, memorizing every detail of Marina's face so he could easily identify her. He placed the ID card in one of his vest pouches then looked around the room some more. He brought his attention back to the pile of books the ID card was laying on and picked one up.

"Marine Biology, huh?" Kruger muttered while flipping through the pages of the textbook. About halfway through, he found a sheet of paper with a half-written essay on it. Surely enough, it belonged to Marina Griffin and was written for a one "Professor Davidsworth". Kruger looked over to one of his men, Torrance, the tech specialist of the team.

"Hop on your terminal and look for a "Professor Davidsworth" at Diamond Ring University. I wanna know where at DRU he is and what time his class starts."

Torrance nodded and pulled out his miniature laptop stored on one of his backpack pouches, turning it on and typing in the name of the professor and DRU. At the top of the results was DRU's official website, with a link to the professor's personal profile. Professor Davidsworth was a bald, blue-eyed older man with a pronounced chin, long nose, and a greying rough beard. He almost resembled an old-timey sea captain, minus the matching attire. Surely enough, Davidsworth had spent 20 years as a fisherman and was an avid diver. He ran the university's marine biology club during afterschool hours, but his classes begun at 8:30 in the morning. Looking up from his terminal, Torrance informed Kruger of his findings.

"Looks like he has classes at 8:30 on the dot. It's gonna be a bit of a wait though, we could just stake it out here and just wait for her to come back?" Suggested Torrance.

"What, we just hang out on the couch and watch Netflix until she decides to come on home. Nah, fuck that. Pack your shit, we're reporting our findings to Mills. Use this time to train or catch some shuteye, I want us geared up and out the door by 8. We clear?"

"Yes sir!" the mercs replied one by one as they marched out of the apartment and back outside to the van before driving off.

Maximillian let out dismissive huff in response to Supercell. Typical of him to avoid help from a civilian; the Super had a crippling "hero" complex, and an ego equally troublesome to match. Maximillian did not look forward to having to work with him, but he felt that there was little other choice.

"I'm afraid I will have to insist," Maximillian answered. "I am a concerned citizen. We civilians want to know what happened here as much as you do. Are we not at least owed that much after this tragedy?"

His eyes briefly drift toward the surrounding fire trucks, picking up the faintest of movements for only a brief moment. Spotting nothing afterward, Maximillian's gaze drifted back to Supercell and the woman, though he kept a mental note that someone else may be watching them, and waited to see how Supercell responded...

Much to Blind's horror, however, she watched as the creature, with a huff and a snarl, effortlessly freed its imprisoned limb from the pinning staple, literally phasing through the steely bind like some sort of specter! The creature let out a trill, eyes locking back intently on the form of Blind, the glint of the feral horror's gaze visible from beneath its shroud of ebony darkness. The creature let out another howl, scratching his long, cracked nails across the earth, before it charged Blind headlong, lower jaw hanging from its hood as it aimed to bite the vigilante!

In the rafters above Heng's clinic, a small, insignificant shape - that of a small sparrow - sat, quietly watching the discussion between her, Alice, and the children below unfold. The bird made quick note of Heng, but eyed Alice curiously. Was this a new entity to be aware and cautious of?
----
A smile appeared on Aileen's face as Octavian's communications came to an end. A mission with her and Callous on the scene? That was something she hadn't had happen in an extremely long time. Not since he'd decided to have the Noble's League exterminated a few years back. Aileen was excited for the chance to prove herself once again in the eyes of Octavian, and do something more than simple paperwork and reconnaissance. Though she'd no doubt made progress on Blind and Heng, that still left the question of Bloodless and Foxtrot. With any luck, the ruckus at GenTech would attract one or the other so they could be easily accounted for.

Setting her GPS, Aileen quickly changed course from Heng's clinic, instead making a beeline for the chaos at the GenTech building. With any luck the crowds owuld have mostly cleared out by now. Last she wanted was to deal with whining, crying, noisy rabble, crowding around, wasting air and taking up her personal space...

White Claw let out an agitated curse, both at the appearance of the wall and Lu's startled gunshot, nearly blasting the cat-eared bandit's head clean off.

"Goddamn Lu!" White Claw gasped, feeling his heart beating in his throat. "You damn near turned my head into jelly!"

white Claw placed a hand against the concrete barrier, before making a quick circular motion with one of his extended claws. Hell no, there was no way he'd be able to scratch his way through this barrier. They'd need some heavy duty explosives or a hell of a punching arm to get through that.

White Claw looked to Lu, hearing her suggestion. He let out a defeated sigh. "Yeah, they probably do, Lu. It's probably somewhere deeper in the building in the employees only section."

He looked back to the wolf-headed woman. "Listen, Lu, we didn't exactly get off on the right foot, but I don't think either of us'll be successful on our own now. How about we work together on this and split the gains, eh?"

Externally, White Claw kept his cool, but internally he cringed. He shouldn't have said that... no need to lead Ms. Fleagbags back on in any capacity if he could avoid it. And Troub was probably gonna be PISSED if he found this out...

The policewoman, leaning off the wall and doing a small stretch- there was a lot of work ahead of her- shook her head. "Nah, MacCleary would kick my ass if she caught us. You know she's not your biggest fan."

Vee shot the vigilante a smirk.

"If it's not morning by the time we're done though, maybe we can meet at Sally's?"

Blind nearly raised her arm to catch the low-hanging jaw of the beast, but a terrible image of its fangs phasing straight through her armor flashed through her mind. The idea deeply frightened her, so she instead sprung back and grasped her cape, which flowed from her shoulders with a faint click. With a crack of the thick fabric, she flung it into the maw of the mangled thing!

While the brute's face was hooded, her cape bundled over its head and tangled into its gnarled teeth, Blind fell back, all the way out of the secret passage and back into the main sewer. This was not a fight she was ready for, so she would try a new approach: deception. Flipping herself up with the use of an old lead pipe, the crimefighter pressed against the tunnel's ceiling and camouflaged herself, her smart suit changing color to break up her outline and blend herself into her surroundings. This creature, whatever it was, seemed half ghost, but perhaps it could be tricked.

The golden-furred giant scoffed. "Got off on the wrong foot? Som, we're on entire wrong legs by this point. But I guess when a useless flirt like you can be right every once and a while. I dunno about you, but I wanna get paid. I dropped a lot of money prepping for this crap. I ain't leaving without at least one fish."

She offered one of her huge hands to the cat burglar.

"If you shimmy your scrawny butt around to look for a way in, I'll keep you covered from any muscle that shows up. I doubt that old bird stopped at just a wall. Deal?"

"Oh, you're absolutely owed that much," Supercell replied with a curt nod. "Hence why I'm trying to get this figured out. I'll let you and the whole city know what I find, believe me."

He folded his arms across his armored chest, frowning slightly as he briefly took the measure of the newcomer. He didn't know what to make of what he saw. For all the guy's eloquent politeness, there was something else there, an indefinable edge. Something cold and hard. It wasn't visible in his unremarkable appearance or really audible in his voice, but all the same, he was plainly not a man to be crossed.

Neither, however, was Isaac Hidalgo. He had a job to do, a lot of people looking to him for results, and some random dude was not going to hold him up just because he was stubborn and quietly intimidating.

"As for your concern, there's a lot of that going around today. I'm concerned , for example, that going near that building might put you in danger. I'll already have to focus on protecting the lady here, and I'd prefer not to risk complicating things beyond that. Now, if you don't mind...?"

The glass door of the Hop N' Stop swung open, a very sweaty looking women soon rushing inside. A few of the customers looked at her for a brief moment, checking out the strange bunny ears on her head before resuming back to their buisness. She fished out her wallet from her sweatpants. Elodie looked up at the small line ahead of her. Great. She hated waiting. Ah well. She finally got out her wallet, looking through it quickly to see if she had enough cash. Yeaaah, she probably should've checked before she got here. Ah well. Looks like she was set for two more days. She mentally groaned. Great. She really needed to make some money soon, or else she was gonna starve. Well, she could beg. But also maybe she could suck up to Jonathan, and he may be able to give just enough to pass by this month. She looked back at the line ahead of her, only one person has sat down.

She sighed, tapping her foot impatiently as her stomach growled. So much for being quick place to eat. After a few minutes of agony, Elodie finally reached up to the counter. She already had her order memorized. She's been practically getting the same thing 3 months in a row at this point. "The chicken patty please! Small variant please!" She said excitedly, leaning her hand on the counter and pushing her back leg out, nearly kicking the person behind her.

"And would you like to Supercell that meal?" The already tired cashier said in an an annoyed tone, filling out the rest of the order.

Elodie shook her head no. "Naah... Not today. Thank you." Elodie payed for her 3 dollar meal and turned around, sitting down at one of the tables, she leaned back in her chair at looked outside. Maybe today will be her lucky day? Maybe she could get a few bucks doing a few good deeds. Her ears suddenly twitched, hearing a loud crash from down the block. Suddenly lots of shouting as well. Elodie turned to look outside, but couldn't see a thing from this angle. She bit her lip, now standing up with her face against the glass. She tapped both of her feet against the floor rapidly, wondering if she leave right now to check it out just in case. Just as she was pondering, the entire street heard the sudden rapid gunfire coming from down the road.

Shit! God damn it now!? She started to run to the door.

"Uh Miss! Your order is ready!"

Elodie skidded to a stop, turning right back around to grab the small bag and ran back towards the door. "ThanksCarlseeyouaround!" She sped out onto the street, already a few civilians running away from where the gunfire. With a determined look, Elodie got a running start, soon hopping off high into the air and landing on a rooftop. The rabbit superhero set down the bag on the roof, pointing at it. "Don't you go anywhere!" She turned her head toward the area where the weapons were fired. Pumping herself up, she got a running start and jumped once more, looking down at where it exactly was. Annnd, she overshot it. It's fine. She landed on another rooftop, nearly falling over. At least she was getting better at sticking the landing! She looked down at the place below, and jumped on down.

The three robbers were quickly raiding the fairly small clothing store, with one of them holding the store owner hostage. Once the other two fully raided the store's register, the leader threw the women to the ground, heading towards the plain white car. "Hurry up! Before some shithead pops up and ruins our day!" The three quickly moved their way towards the car, getting open the passenger door when suddenly he heard loud yelling above him. In a matter of a second, a purple and white blur slammed down on the roof of the car, then rolling onto the hood of the car and onto the hard ground.

"FUCK!" Elodie let out, cringing in pain. Gritting her teeth, she readied to slam her foot into the car to and wipeout these low level goons. From the corner of her eye, she saw a guy in black shades aiming his pistol at her. With her quick thinking and kicking, she rolled out of the way, kicking the front of the car to send it turning towards the criminals, knocking them down and pinning them underneath the car. She stood up finally, looking towards where the guys were pinned. 2 out of 3. Now where was the other one...?

Her ears twitched again, hearing the soft click of a pistol reloading. "Aw shit, isn't it that bad bunny girl!? You ain't stealing this away from me! Elodie furrowed her eyebrows. She hated that stupid nickname. She jumped back in the air, twirling around and giving the remaining burglar a roundhouse kick in the face! The criminal was sent flying toward another poor resident's car, knocking him unconscious. With a longwinded sigh, Elodie leaned against the car for a moment. She set her right foot down, cringing at the pain shooting up her body. She exhaled slowly, biting on her tongue a bit to try and null the pain.

The store owner finally came out, already having called the authorities to the scene. "Thank you so much! I-I haven't seen you on the news.. Who are you?"

Elodie smiled back at the 53 year old lady, noting the small wound on her left shoulder. "Oh! Name is Cider! N-Normally I'm in my hero clothes, but uh.. Duty calls at anytime I guess!" Elodie laughed nervously. She wasn't quite used to the friendly 'people coming up to you to thank you' part of this hero thing.

"I-I don't really know what to give you dearie, but uhhh." The poor woman reached into her pockets, pulling out a few 25% off coupons for the store she was working at. "This is all I have at the moment, but thank you.."

"Yeah yeah. No problem, just wanna do the right thing for us folks, ya'know!" Elodie carefully took the coupons and stuffed them into her sweatpants pocket. "A-Alright! I gotta go make sure others stay safe around here! Have a good day! Thank you for the coupons!" Elodie saluted the lady and jumped into the air, landing back on the roofs. She looked down at her leg and whimpered a bit, just hoping the pain would go away soon. Damn, that was a really shitty entrance wasn't it? At least she made a speedy recovery. But damn, that was embarrassing. Her stomach growled again, reminding her about her chicken patty. Getting to a running start, she headed back to where her brunch was, still in the same place she left it. Opening the bag and wrapping paper, she bit into the juicy chicken, now cold. Ah well, at least she got to eat now. She limped over to the side of the building, soon sitting down on the edge of the building, letting her legs dangle back and forth. As the sirens could be heard going to the scene of the crime, she bit into the chicken again, wondering what to to do next for the day.

"Thank you so much, Supercell! You're truly the hero we all deserve!" the female GenTech employee he was speaking to earlier interrupted. She wiped some dust off of her glasses before putting them back on and adjusting them.

"Now, as I said before. We have reason to suspect that this was an attempt by our competitors to cripple our company. We've been seeing signs in the past few months that the other three big bio-tech companies, A-O Pharmaceuticals, the Danvers Corporation, and K-Tech, have been planning to make some kind of move after decades of being in GenTech's shadow. As you know, we're one of the best in the country when it comes to pharmaceuticals and bio-technology, and it appears that certain actors have deemed it necessary to take more....drastic...measures to catch up"

The woman said as she pushed her classes up and looked Supercell firmly in the eyes. Motioning to the destroyed lab, she continued.

"What you're seeing here is the result of these measures to take down GenTech. This act of blatant terrorism has cost us the lives of dedicated employees; men and women with families. I hope with your help, Supercell, we can get to the bottom of this and uncover the villains behind this tragedy!"

She turned to the assembled crowd, many of which were GenTech employees that had evacuated the building. Some began to clap, others began to sob from the trauma of losing friends and coworkers. In her head, the woman was glad there were no other survivors of the lab explosion. The one intern that did would be easy to silence or persuaded that it was just hysteria caused by the explosion. The task at hand now, was to track down this "Franklin" and terminate him before the truth came to the surface. She was aware that GenTech had a mercenary arm that few knew about, and she assumed that they were already hunting this abomination of science down.

Heng stepped back toward the doorway and produced the phone for the clinic in her hands. Alice could see the phone was active, with someone on the other line.

"Is it on speaker phone?"

"Not right now, but if you want me to-"

"Put in on speaker phone once I get these children settled." Alice then turned to the kids and smiled. "I'll be right back. I have a very important call to take, so my dolls will make sure you are all behaving well."

"Yes, Miss Alice." One of the children said, and the others were quick to follow up on them. With a nod, Alice turned to walk off, but she made sure to keep the dolls active and doing their parts. If only they were fully autonomous and not controlled by her, then she wouldn't have to multi-task so many things at once, but she had years of experience and practice, and holding a phone conversation with a most unpleasant person while she made sure the children behaved was child's play for her.

She followed Heng out of the main daycare room and into the narrow hallway between the clinic and the daycare. The strings for the dolls slid down to beneath the door entrance so they weren't caught in the doorway. Alice gave Heng a nod, and the doctor put the phone onto speaker phone. "Hi hi, Tenny! Sorry to put you on hold!"

"You're not sorry about that, and you know it." The voice of Tenmus warbled from the other end. "I wouldn't be calling you and Alice if it wasn't urgent."

"Well, you have us. Is there anything we can do for you, oh crane?" Alice asked.

"First, do not call me that. Second, I need you to investigate something for me, Alice."

"When I'm not doing daycare duty, I assume?"

"Sooner rather than later, but yes. There are reports of explosions occurring at GenTech, and ordinarily I would simply let Supercell handle that. However, the timing of this right after one of Viola Graves's arm shipments being foiled points to a possible connection."

"I've been telling you this for the better part of a year, Tenny." Heng chimed in. "Viola's getting her weapons from GenTech or one of their rivals. Where else would she be getting military grade equipment from? And how else would we be unable to catch her?"

"Not just military grade equipment, Heng." Tenmus cut her off. "Not anymore. According to police testimony, the weapons retrieved are unlike anything we've seen, beyond ordinary or even military firearms. Whoever is supplying her with this has connections to high places, and only an advanced technological corporation like GenTech or K-Tech makes any semblance of sense, especially if they are doing more than just pharmaceutical and bio-engineering like they say they are."

Alice held a hand to her chin. "But, we have no hard evidence. We never had any. The two times you went in people to inspect them, nothing turned up."

"That's why I'm sending you in, Alice. I know SuperCell is already there, but I cannot trust him to look under every stone to find a connection. And while I want you to go in and investigate GenTech and K-Tech soon, not tonight. GenTech will be on high alert with what just happened, and you'll need to find a moment when peace has returned to do your business. Heng, I'll be sending you the confiscated weapons for you to analyze. Either find evidence of a correlation between Viola and GenTech, or at the very least find a way to track down this annoying cockroach of an arms-dealer."

Alice let out a long, pained sigh. "I'll see what I can do. I owe you a favor, so consider this the favor repaid. otherwise, I would turn it down."

"You wouldn't be much of a hero if you did, Alice."

"I'm a hero for the children I take care of first and foremost." The Puppeteer explained. " The city has plenty of actual heroes handling the larger picture, while it is the smaller details that are overlooked, the children who are concerned about tomorrow and their safety. Someone has to be there to hold their hand until the danger passes, and to protect them. That is what I am doing."

"I understand that, but when the front comes to you, don't come crying to me that you should have been proactive against evil instead of reactive." The phone went silent, and Heng closed it.

"Hard to believe she prefers to not talk to others." Heng said. "A bit of a lone bird."

"Geh, I wonder why..." Alice turned back around to head to the daycare. "She really needs to loosen up, or all that paranoia is going to be the end of her."

Kala slipped back into the aquarium through the entrance. The living shadow looked around, to relocate where the large old fish were at again. She had just been in here, so why was she having such a hard time remembering...

Her head swerved to the left, toward the underwater tunnel. There was noise coming from there. She moved fast, hoping she was not too late...

Keeping an eye on Aileen’s coordinates, Octavian deducted her destination. He quickly turned away from his current course, carelessly cutting through a lane of traffic, who were less than happy some rich prick cut in front of them.

“Heng’s not on the menu, it seems. What is Aileen planning?”

——

“GenTech… what could have led her here?” Octavian’s pristine Mercedes edged closer, wheels crunching down on the gravel. Stepping out, Callous could feel a dark presence sitting around the building. His mind was filled with an overwhelming sense of sorrow and dread.

“No matter.” Callous continued forward, taking note of the smoke and flames. A smile formed across his face as he overheard talking and a familiar presence. It was Supercell. He’s chatting it up with some Gen Tech employee. I can’t show myself yet. Aileen needs to get here.

——

Driving along, Aileen gets a call. Opening it, her master whispers into the microphone.
“Are you nearly here? We’ve got company, and I can sense there’s going to be a lot more people showing up than we anticipated.”

“I’m on my way.” Looking to her left, Aileen sees a Gen Tech sign, pointing a large arrow in the direction of the facility.

——

Sneaking closer, his tracker on Aileen starts to beep. She’s nearly here. Covering it with his hand, he crossed the road and put his back up against the wall, edging closer to the fire. The talking gets louder. The sense gets heavier on his mind. Unclipping his blade from his belt, and removing his gloves, he prepares to make his mark. A true mark.

He’d show himself worthy of his own pride. He’d take control over this situation and defeat anyone who came his way. Now, just to wait for Aileen to arrive soon…

"Sally's eh? I'll meet you there after work, then," Foxtrot smiled back, her blazing green goggles hiding her playful wink. "Be safe out there, okay girl? I'll catch up with you later tonight. Say hi to MacCleary for me!"

Almost simultaneously, both Blind and Foxtrot would receive an SMS text message from an unknown sender. Interestingly, the number was listed as "protected". The message preview displayed a link to a google drive document and nothing else. Their phones would vibrate again with another message being received, this time a written one.

"You'll be interested in this. Project Hades. It wasn't an explosion. <8>". Very cryptic, and eerily coincidental that both would receive this message a mere hour or two after the explosion occurred. Even more interestingly was the "emoji" at the end of the message, resembling a crude wasp or bee made of different characters. Perhaps this was some sort of signature the sender used to identify themselves to the recipients without revealing their identity? Either way, the message containing the google drive link was awfully tempting. The subsequent message implied that whatever was on this drive would give insight into what was happening at GenTech.

Marina had managed to slink back into the crowd of onlookers without being detected, or at least she hoped. Her thoughts were a mess at the moment, and she rubbed her temples in a vain attempt to clear up the confusion. Franklin wasn't in the lab from what she could tell, and she really hoped he wasn't one of the mutilated corpses strewn about the lab. So much so that she aggressively pushed the thought out of her mind whenever it wormed its way in. Was it just barely possible that he escaped somehow? Maybe the treatment DID work, and he was able to get out of the building somehow when the explosion went off. She used the term "explosion" loosely, as she still wasn't entirely convinced that it was a bomb, at least not from what she was able to ascertain based on the damage. Maybe some whacko with a laser cannon came in and started shooting up the place. As ridiculous as that sounded, it seemed more plausible than a simple bomb.

"God, this is a fucking nightmare. Why did it have to be us?" Marina groaned. She gradually made her way back to her car and grabbed the door handle of the driver's side door and pulled. As she suspected, the door was jammed shut and she exhaled in frustration. She considered simply yanking the door open, but that would also risk damaging the car further and frankly, she did not need more on her plate right now. Instead she opted to go in through the passenger side door, as mildly inconveniencing as it was. She slumped down into the driver's seat and pulled out her phone to check the time. She stared at her lock screen photo, the same one Franklin had on his of their shared kiss on the beaches of Nantucket. The longer she stared at it, the less she wanted to go back to their apartment and be surrounded by things that would make her worry skyrocket. Marina unlocked her phone and opened her contacts, tapping on the contact named "Papa" and began writing a text message.

"Daddy, call me as soon as you get this. I really need to talk to you. Love 'Mari <3" she wrote before going back to her contacts and going to a contact named "Sierra". Sierra was a fellow student in Professor Davidsworth's Marine Bio class. Sierra was a very extroverted person, who despite Marina's intense apprehension of strangers, slowly became a good friend of hers. In fact aside from Franklin, Sierra was probably the only other person Marina allowed to get close to her. Marina still didn't trust Sierra enough to tell her about what she was and her true heritage, and probably never would, but it was just enough to where she felt she could tell her just about anything else. Tapping on the number in the contact, Sierra quickly picked up the phone and blurted out a barrage of questions before Marina could even open her mouth to speak.

"Oh my gosh, Marina! Are you okay?? I heard about what happened at that laboratory, What happened to Franklin?? Did he make it out??" Sierra sputtered.

Marina was taken aback by the questions, but she preferred it over apathy.

"I'm a complete mess. I'm at the place now and the whole lab is destroyed. On the TV everything was burning and people were screaming, it was horrible. Franklin...god. I don't know if he made it out or not but I'm scared shitless that he got hurt or...or..." Marina couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence. Thankfully, Sierra appeared to understand.

"Don't think about that. I'm sure he's okay! Maybe they got him out before everything happened? Or maybe he escaped?" Sierra said to reassure her friend and direct her away from catastrophizing.

"Goddamn it I feel so fucking stupid for pushing him to do this. I knew something was sketchy, but I never thought something like this would happen. Now Frank might be really hurt or worse because of me" Marina doubled down on her negativity, raising her voice ever so slightly.

"Baby don't think like that!! It's not your fault, and you couldn't have known something like this would happen! Tell you what, come over to my place and stay the night here. You can vent and maybe we can do something with my parents to take your mind off of stuff. My dad is a pro at UNO and he's super funny!"

Sierra suggested. Marina thought it was probably for the best to try and take her mind off of this and cool off so she can return to a more rational state of mind. Then afterwards, she can decide her next course of action, probably going to the local hospital or police and asking if they found anyone matching Franklin's description.

"Okay, I'll be over right away. Sierra, I really, really appreciate this" Marina said earnestly.

"Of cooourse Mari, anytime!" Sierra replied before they said their goodbyes. Marina casually threw her phone onto the passenger's seat of the car and sighed, turning the vehicle on and leaving the scene.

Maximilian rolled his eyes, catching the hint Supercell was dropping. Leave it to Supercell to want to keep things all to himself. Relaxing his stance, the Itallian man forced himself to to smile, before offering the superhero a nod. "of course. i will leave such important business to one qualified to handle it."

Stepping away from the Super and the GenTech woman, Maximilian blended back into the crowd of civilians nearby. It looked like he would have to find an alternative way to investigate the building. Eyes scanning his surroundings thoroughly, Maximilian soon spotted a back alley near the edge of the crowded streets. Perfect... if he was lucky, there would be a fire escape or something similar for him to make use of. He would just have to be quick to avoid drawing too much attention to himself.

Laying low to avoid catching the attention of either the overwhelmed security officer or Supercell himself, Maximilian maneuvered swiftly through the mass of people, preferring to squeeze past the worried horde that had amassed near the GenTech building, forcing people out of his way where he had to. A few people cursed and shouted at him for his rude behavior, but he paid them little heed - he had a task to complete. In but a few moments, Maximilian found himself in a dark alley beside the building.

Scanning the shadowy alleyway, Maximilian stepped further in, sending a trio of rats skittering away deeper in, diving behind a nearby dumpster. His eyes soon fell upon a small side door - presumably to the kitchen where the eatery was. He made a quick tug on the door.

"locked," Maximilian murmured to himself. However, he felt that the door has been weakened by whatever chaos had unfolded inside of the building, so instead, Maximilian opted to kick down the door. It took him a couple tries, but he eventually hit it at just the right angle that the weakened lock burst enough for him to open the door and slide into the ruins of GenTech...
----
The crisp night air has gotten biting at this point, licking its way across Dhriti's cheeks as she jogged towards the GenTech building.

"I knew i should've brought a damn sweater..." Dhriti murmured to herself. "Least it isn't hot anymore."

Off in the distance, the Indian woman could make out the dancing, crimson lights of emergency responder vehicles, along with the shapes of dozens of people flashing against the walls of the entire block. She could make out the forms of new crews on the scene, recording the aftermath of the chaos that had occurred only a scant few minutes prior.

As Dhriti approached, her jog slowed down to a speed walk, quickly scooting her way past nearby news crews and into the mass of people surrounding the site. Dhriti quickly slid her way through the encroaching mass and made her way to the front, where she saw the totality of the destruction that had unfolded.

"Holy crap..." Dhriti murmured to herself. Her eyes looked to Supercell and the woman, before they fell further onto the destruction before her. It was truly a repulsive sight to behold... rubble strewn everywhere, smoke billowing high into the sky, the smell of burning plastic, rubber, and god knows what the fuck else. She didn't see any bodies, but she had no doubt that they had already been taken or were still inside of the building.

With so many people around, it'd be a good chance to try and get a peek inside and see if there was anybody still inside she could save. Dhriti slowly made her way to the edge of the crowd, towards the firetrucks that blocked the nearby intersection. If she was lucky, they would give her enough cover to slink in undetected...

Only a scant few minutes passed before the familiar plain sedan pulled up near Octavian's beautiful Mercedes. The door pushed itself open, before a sandal clad foot stepped out of the vehicle, followed by a long flowing summery dress. grabbing her wide-brimmed summer hat from the passenger's seat, Aileen stepped out fully into view, before setting the massive hat upon her head. She offered Octavian a rare smile.

"You beat me here," Aileen said with a light chuckle. "Always manage to beat me to a location, even if I have the lead. You certainly have your methods."

Aileen looked out towards the chaos unfolding at the GenTech building, folding her arms behind her back. "It's beautiful in its own twisted way, is it not?"

White Claw looked up to Lu, before looking down at her hand. He gulped nervously before clasping his much smaller hand against the wolf woman's own massive, furred hand.

"Deal," White Claw said. "Now let's make some money and get the hell out of here."

Internally, White Claw cringed again. Last thing he wanted was to have to make any sort of contact with Lu again - but if it made them a pay day, it beat going back home broke again. How else was he supposed to meet actual chicks?

Relinquishing his grip, White Claw sprinted deeper into the facility, extending his claws in case he needed to deal with any... unwanted interlopers. Now, where to find the employees only section in this labyrinth of an aquarium?

Distracted by the cape flung into its face, the frightening creature loosed a confused snarl, rustling its face into the discarded article. After a few moments, the creature phased through the cape, its hooded head never revealing the extent of its true visage. the creature looked about in confusion, hearing the distinct clink of metal against concrete as blind leapt up onto the ceiling and camouflaged herself against the roof. Suddenly, the pipe Blind had used to vault herself into the roof came loose, before it fell onto the creature's head!

To Blind's surprise, however, the pipe seemed to strike the creature true, splitting its brow and spilling out strange spectral fluid! The creature yowled in surprise and sheepishly rubbed its brow, letting out a low grumble in annoyance. Glancing briefly around the room and up towards the ceiling, the creature brushed aside the lead pipe with a hiss, before grabbing Blind's cape and swiftly galloping down the hallway in search for her.

"O-okay... it's gone..."Bruce sighed. "I thought we were goners, Slim!"

The door to the corridor opened back up, and Alice re-entered the daycare. Just as she had expected, the children were still easily entertained and on good behavior, even little Billy who was so much younger than everyone else. She was not too keen on having the children eavesdrop on her conversations with Heng behind closed doors, and at first she and Heng had simply gone into the actual clinic for their discussions, but when the children kept trying to get through the locked doors and started to hurt themselves, Alice had decided to simply keep puppeting her dolls to keep the children distracted and entertained even while she was talking with Heng. It was annoying for her to do, and relied on her memorizing where each child had been just before she left the room and relying on audio cues while the discussion was happening to keep the dolls working as necessary, but so far it was a success, and it kept the children from hurting themselves trying to listen in on her.

Once she was in the room, the children were once more back at her. They swarmed her and pulled on her pant legs and sleeves.

"Can you tell us another story?"

"We want to hear a story!"

"One last story before we leave, Miss Alice?"

"Can I have pie flavored pie?"

Alice giggled as she found her rocking chair seat. "Another story is something I can tell all of you... and Jeremy, there is no more pie. You'll have to wait until tomorrow." She patted Jeremy's head as he groaned, and then she clapped her hands twice. "This will be the final story, as your parents are starting to arrive to pick you up. It will be a fast one... The Tale of the Wheel of Calamity."

There was a bunch of gasps and "ooooh" from the children, and as they went silent to listen, Alice cleared her throat.

"This is a story about the birth of Los Diamantes, many years ago. During the Great Depression, many people had no homes or places to live. They had no money, no one to help them, and so they traveled far and wide across the land in search of opportunity. A group of these travelers stumbled upon this place, which back then was little more than a small valley with an oasis in the middle. Though there were no animals to be found, the travelers realized the ground was fertile and many berries and fruits were growing around the oasis. They set up their camp in the area and became permanent residents. Over the years, more and more people were drawn to this strange oasis in the wasteland, and with them they brought their cattle and sheep and goats and other animals. Los Diamantes began to take shape, but the animals wanted no part of the small growing town. They were scared, spooked solid, and would run and never be seen again. Not even the only source of water for miles could keep them there."

"One day, the local mayor of the town decided to investigate the oasis and the water within to see what was causing the animals to behave so erratically. He and his team of officers went to investigate, but went missing for a week. The next time the mayor was seen, he was covered in golden scales and had webbing between his arms and legs that gave him the shape of a star. He called himself The Wheel of Calamity, and terrorized the young town of Los Diamantes, proclaiming he was the servant of a great power that dwelled beneath the city. Children were warned to not leave their homes, or he would snatch them up and eat them."

The children reeled back in shock, their breaths held. "He... ate them?!" One child asked.

Alice nodded. "No one could leave the town, because he would chase them down and eat them. He had become a monster, and everyone knew this was the end for them... That was, until a wandering priest entered the town. He claimed to be from a far off place, but had sensed the evil of the corrupted mayor and had come to put an end to him. The two fought with powers beyond any ordinary man, and the priest triumphed, or so they say. Their bodies were never found, no one knows what became of them, but after that day, the town became normal. Animals no longer fled in fear, and Los Diamantes was allowed to grow and prosper into the city we live in today."

The children began to clap. "Is that story true?" Jeremy asked. "Did that really happen?"

Alice shook her head. "It is simply a folktale, a legend passed down over the years. But, some say this legend is what has drawn so many both good and bad to the city, some to seek out that kind of power, others to make a name for themselves."

Blind let out a silent sigh of relief as the horrific beast bound away. It seemed her ploy had paid off, though not without its surprises.

The vigilante carefully dropped down from her perch, landing quietly next to the pipe that had injured the beast. She kneeled next to it. Why had it affected the creature when her ammunition had not? Was it the water that coated it from the damp environment? No, that could not be it, because then her foam would have stopped it. Maybe it was its physical makeup instead then. Some chemical component that her staples had lacked.

After cutting away a sample of the old, degraded pipe with a simple chisel tool that slid from her smart suit's list, Donna ducked back into the hidden corridor.

"Come to finish us off, supe?" Slim sneered, thrashing against his restraints like a rabid weasel. "Well, come on and try! I'll gut you if you touch me!"

His larger partner paled. "I told you, d- don't make her mad!"

Ignoring the threat, as well as the diminutive man who had delivered it, with a small shake of her head, Blind walked to Bruce instead. He cowered back despite the vast weight differential.

"Phone," she requested simply, her hand extended.

"O- Okay, just- you'll still let us go, right?"

"No," she replied as she took the burner phone from his hands, pocketing it.

"W- Wh- What, b- but you said-"

"Relax. I won't, but someone will."

From another pocket, the hooded hero produced a cheap smartphone. After taking note of the messages displayed- and knowing the attached document was something she needed to look into tonight- she took out and replaced its SIM card.

"One burner for another," Blind explained, offering Bruce the phone. "Call for help. From the police if you need to. But if you call your employer though, pass them a message for me."

The vigilante began to leave, costume swimming with dark, mottled patterns that helped her bleed into the dimness of the sewer.

"The world won't be blind to their crimes for much longer."

As White Claw slunk off, the wolf-headed woman stretched out her great body, grunting as her spine gave a few faint pops. Smacking her lips, she drew her goliath sidepiece and scanned the hall with her hazel eyes.

"Work is work," the giant grumbled, apparently trying to reassure herself. She too had reservations about this alliance, it seemed. "Get paid, get out. That's how the game goes."

For a moment, she considered promising aloud to warn Somsak if a supe showed up, but she kept the thought to herself.

After all, she might need a distraction if one did show their face.

From atop his elevated perch, Strunahkaar carefully observed. The one known as Supercell drew most of his attention. He listened as the thunder-throwing hero fought back against someone called Callous. Distracting him from the battle was a series of short explosions, capturing the Dragon’s attention as he glanced down to the layer of clouds, watching the colorful bursts briefly paint the clouds in dazzling light. Attention swinging from the park to the fireworks, Strun took in the sound of youths laughing, which rapidly turned to agonized screaming as another creature arrived to threaten them. Soon, the Shearwind Dragon’s ears were subject to the unmistakable sound of ripping flesh and spilling blood. His snout snapped to that direction, yellow eyes narrowing. This one might have meant well, but they were heavy-handed and despicable. There was no honor in manhandling a much weaker foe, let alone children. If he heard her voice again, he would challenge her to face something she could not bully so easily.

As Strun pondered, the clouds around him, and indeed around the city as a whole, began to swirl, pulled by some kind of force. To his surprise — and shock, given that he was now exposed to the people below — the clouds formed a massive column which then spilled downwards to extinguish a humongous fire. He noticed this was the same little creature as the one who was fighting before. A sound came from Strun, somewhere between an impressed grunt and an amused chuckle. He wondered how this one was able to control the elements. The Beasts of his world were nature spirits, and so were the Dragons. The fundamental difference between them was, of course, that his species chiefly embodied the chaotic and destructive power of the elements. This one appeared to act more like the great Beasts, using his power to preserve and protect. He would keep an eye on him.

Unmoving like a winged, horned statue, the Dragon remained motionless, but aware - waiting for day to turn to night or for clouds to come back and cover him to allow him to move again. In the meantime, he could continue monitoring what was happening below.
