Whoah...Gane's art is looking much better in that panel.
Is it a different colorist?

It's spoiler heavy. I enjoyed this issue, though.

No, it's still Ronda Pattison. I agree that his art looks much better in just the preview. Speaking of the preview...

What's riling up the monsters? Could it be inter-galactic invaders? I don't know!

It's not answered in this issue, but my guess would be SpaceGodzilla.

Yeah, the Monster Island art page there is actually the worst in the issue... the stuff in Vancouver is much better, but it's still Simon Gane's normal style (so you know what to expect).

For the life of me I'll never understand why people hate Gane's work. It's sloppy and rushed sometimes, yes, but most of the time it doesn't look half-bad/ looks alright. And when he really puts his heart into it, he can create panels like these:

Oh, please tell me how "craptastic" these are. It's not easy to keep up with the deadlines, you know.

I sympathise with making deadlines...but if he's not up to the job then he shouldn't have been hired. Having maybe one good panel per issue is not enough to even remotely tempt me into picking these things up

Simon Gane can draw some fantastic monsters, his Rodan is incredible.

With the issue, I'm at the other end of the spectrum, I found it rather disappointing. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks.

Um, there's obviously more than one good panel per issue. Nearly all the monster scenes are very well-done.

Tell me, if there was a Godzilla comic series where every panel was fantastic, would you pick it up?

The story would still have to be good as well...so honestly right now, no.

But if the art was even half/half and the story was amazing I'd be in.

Well then, you haven't heard of Godzilla: The Half-Century War. Fantastic, beautiful art AND a fantastic, unique story.

Read these reviews and hopefully you'll be interested:

Overall, everyone should be checking out The Half-Century War.
If you were to check out Godzilla comics, this is what you ought to read.

What didn't you like about the issue? I found it enjoyable, and the end read well IMO.

Everything that made Issue #6 a really good read, (Mothra and her Priestesses, Claire's vision, Godzilla's silent conversation with Mothra) none of that is found here. The characters in my opinion haven't really been fleshed out well at all in the past six issues, not emotionally involved with them, so them getting extended page time of development, I just didn't find any of it interesting. So when the big thing happened near the end, it didn't phase me. The things that matter, Mothra, the invasion, (where is Rodan?) none of that is really referenced other than the beginning on Monster Island. To me, it seemed like an issue to buy for time. Not filler like #5, but buying for time until the things we actually care about start to happen.

But I will say this...Simon Gane can draw a really good Godzilla.

You sound like the people who hated Mignola, Sienkiewicz, and Miller's artwork because it wasn't "glossy" enough. Don't pay any attention to his solid forms, angles, use of depth, or any of the things that you use to judge artwork other than personal taste.

Yep on all counts. I'm a Bob Eggleton and Art Adams fan. Don't see why I should have to say I'm sorry for having an opinion.

^I'd never ask for an apology, just didn't see anything actually backing up such a strong, one-sided opinion, that's all.

Well with #7 officially out in stores, I'll post my review. (Some spoilers.) http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/comics/ ... view/35135
The GODZILLA Ongoing has passed the halfway point. It hasn’t been what I’d call ‘great.’ While it does feature a pretty impressive roster of monsters and an ‘incoming doom,’ it’s been pretty average with an alright main cast. In the last issue things started to look up with the arrival of Mothra and her Priestesses. They warned that the monsters weren’t the real threat. It’s the rise, not the fall. Mothra proved to be a very much needed character, cause she actually had personality, something lacking from the title monster. #6 was a step in the right direction, establishing a very cool plot, (SpaceGodzilla is bringing his pals) and the possibility of Mothra getting the monsters together. Unfortunately none of that good stuff is here, it’s almost as if #6 didn’t happen. While Godzilla is the focus finally, it ended being up mediocre and maybe the worst issue yet.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

It’s the day Boxer has been waiting for… the opportunity to avenge his daughter in a showdown with Godzilla. At the exact worst moment though, the government and their secret weapon step in to take matters into their own hands. You know what they say about “best laid plans…”

It starts out pretty cool, with Miss Asuka and the Dr. Pohl discussing their secret weapon. Then it cuts to Monster Island where we see that the monsters are getting riled up about something. The rest of the issue is Boxer’s attempt to destroy Godzilla. (They want to melt him in a volcano, I guess they never saw the 92 film.) I haven’t been too fond of Duane Swierczynski’s writing, by now it’s tiring to read about Boxer and his revenge mission. Claire seems un-phased, as if the vision Mothra gave her didn’t happen. A lot of the issue is spent on the Monster Kill crew as they wait and wait for Godzilla to appear. We see them play cards, we see Boxer ask Harrison if he has a girlfriend, we see Boxer and his ex talking about why they didn’t work, but do we care? I mean, it feels like the issue is just buying time. There were some parts I liked, such as when Ms. Asuka sees Godzilla and says “Wow, that’s really him” with the doctor replying “It. My dear. It.” It gives that guy character in that he seems to think of these beasts as just walking weapons. He doesn’t want to think of them as real beings.

Simon Gane really knows how to draw a kaiju. There’s a really impressive page with Godzilla emerging from the water. There’s also some nice up-and-close shots of G’s face, some really good detail. The humans look okay, albeit some rather off scenes. (Claire’s face looked really strange when Boxer was talking about why they didn’t work out.) The main cover is a pretty cool shot of Godzilla as Boxer is about to shoot him with a bazooka. Godzilla’s face may make him look more like a hero, but it’s still not a bad cover. The variant by Matt Frank is in his usual dynamic style, with Godzilla about to stomp on Boxer. There’s not much else to say, Rodan is nowhere to be seen, neither is Mothra or the Cosmos. In the end, only one thing was really accomplished, the use of the government’s ‘secret weapon.’ Oh and someone dies, but it’s hard to care considering the fact this character wasn’t really fleshed out at all in the previous six issues.

Overall, I’m very sad to say instead of going forward in quality, it went backward. Issue #6 was a really good one, but #7 is like #5, it doesn’t feel like anything big happens. The stuff we want to see, (Mothra, the Cosmos, SpaceGodzilla) is not here, instead we have to watch a bunch of under-fleshed out characters try in vain to destroy Godzilla. I sincerely hope the next one will bring this series into what looks to be an exciting final act.

3/5

Fair enough, and have to agree... almost seems like this issue could have easily taken place before #6, with just a few details changed.
