"My version" of Godzilla 2 (MonsterVerse)

Post by Legendary Minya »

So, I wrote this and posted it on my Facebook page back in 2017, before much was known about what would ultimately become King of the Monsters. It was never meant to be a "I bet this is exactly what they are going to do", it was just for fun, so it's pretty unrealistic but I was interested to see a couple things I described happened in the movie! (No, obviously no one "stole my idea", I just thought it was neat). Anyway, figured I'd post it here just to see what y'all thought. Enjoy.

"GODZILLA 2: RISE OF THE MONSTERS"

The movie starts with somewhat of a cross between a “50’s space age” vibe and a WW2 USA propaganda news reel “infomercial” about how wonderful Monarch is and what they do to keep us safe every day. After Godzilla’s battle with the “M.U.T.O.” creatures in San Francisco, the shadow organization was forced to step into the spotlight as several photographs of their buildings, vehicles, and personnel; all with their logo, were taken during 2014. Even more troubling were a series of leaked e-mails between members of Monarch and the key members of several nations’ governments, up to and including the President of the United States. A real “what did they know, and when did they know it?” type situation. Internally, there is much argument as to whether Monarch should become a primary militaristic organization, or stay true to their scientific roots, as the grim reality of needing to protect mankind from these monsters wrestles with the desire to study and learn from them. Monarch’s biggest funding nations are the US (who alone furnish 70% of their weapons budget) and Japan, their leading scientific contributor.

An example of this dichotomy is shown while Monarch’s combat division celebrates a recent victory in Vietnam against a swam of giant Hierodula Kamakiris, or Giant Asian Mantis, while a science team laments the fact that not much material (and no living specimens) remained intact for study.

The video continues; a focus is shone on Monarch as a unifying force; they have “research facilities” all over the world, in Siberia (a furious blizzard howls as several huge ice stalagmites of varying length can be seen protruding from the snow inside the “camp” like walled structure), London (The entrance to an underground facility with eerily smiling/waving guards is shown, and not much more), Puerto Rico (A Monarch facility has been built into the side of a dormant volcano in the middle of an island paradise) Japan, rebuilt and expanded at the former site of the Janjira disaster, and their newest location, Antarctica (Cold. Silent. Dead. Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham look into the camera with grim faces bundled up tightly in wooly winter coats). Not mentioned in this promo, of course; there are at least two “classified” bases, one in China and one on a neighboring island of Skull Island…

Except for the occasional ‘megafauna’ (the term MUTO having been retired to only refer to the monsters that Godzilla fought, for clarity’s sake) such as the giant mantises, it is a time of peace. Save for alleged, unverified sightings out at sea now and then, Godzilla has not been spotted since the Battle of San Francisco, all traces of the MUTOs were eradicated. Giant monsters become “popular”, the movie blockbuster of 2018 was even the story of a giant fire breathing turtle and his best friend, a wisecracking 10 year old boy, who saves mankind from an army of monsters from under the sea! A controversial pop starlet wears a skimpy Godzilla-inspired gown to an awards show…

Sitting at a computer console at the Arctic base, Serizawa shakes his head and wonders how the rest of the world can make such frivolity of the world they now live in. It appears that Serizawa “knows too much” and asks too many questions, and has been punished by being re-assigned to the Arctic facility under the guise of a promotion as its co-director, along with Dr. Graham. She brings him a warm drink and squeezes his shoulder, and he smiles wearily, indicating the two may be developing a relationship of sorts. Serizawa is in the middle of reading an email from a colleague in China. “Hey…Takarada’s found something….” he says. The power goes out and everything is pitch black. Serizawa sighs with annoyance; apparently this is a fairly common occurrence here. A shrill scream is heard in another room, and Serizawa’s annoyance grows. He recognizes the sound as his niece, Yukiko Serizawa, who at 19 is interning with Monarch. She is also Dr. Serizawa’s responsibility. She enters the room with a whine. “Uncle! The wi-fi is down again!”. She has long black hair streaked with purple and wears a lab coat with several cute buttons and accessories pinned all over it. “Everything is down, Yukiko.” Serizawa grumbles.

Meanwhile in Yunnan, China, during a visit to the “Temple of the Moth” a small expedition team has made a startling discovery. Make that…a pair of discoveries. First re-discovered in 2009, the Temple contains an enormous cocoon as well as many carved images of a huge mothlike creature. Readings of the cocoon indicate something is, in fact, alive inside of it, but it has mostly been studied from afar, a choice that seems even more sound after the close study of the MUTO cocoon went so horribly wrong at Janjira. A small team is dispatched to the temple every so often to look for any changes. What they found today was completely unexpected; a pair of young twins, both female, and smaller than a human child, though appearing human in every other way (both twins to be played by Millie Bobby Stranger Things, shrunk down via the magic of special effects), dressed in celestial garments like those found on the carved and painted figures worshipping the moth creature throughout the temple. They both have what fans will recognize as Mothra’s symbol, one has it painted over her left eye, and the other, her right. The twins appear to be mute, but communicate simultaneously through telepathy. Expedition leader Eiji Takarada asks the girls who they are…they answer without moving their lips (Maybe scrap this and have them talk. I dunno.) “We are the Cosmos”. When asked what they are doing in the temple, they respond “We have always been here.”

Always?

“Since the beginning.”

The three person Monarch team look at one another nervously. The twins appear friendly..but nothing about this situation is putting anyone at ease.

“Why are you here?” asks another member of the party. “To warn you.” Comes the ominous reply.

“Warn us? Of what?”

“GHIDORAH.”

“Ghidorah?”

“King Ghidorah.” They answer once again. “The beginning and the end. The one who came before. Monster Zero.” The Cosmos sense the fear and confusion of their guests and explain they are not only there to warn the world, but to offer them aid. The lone member of Monarch’s military division that accompanied the two scientists smirks, and asks what a couple of little girls who can throw their voices are going to do against whatever this “Ghidorah” is?

“Not us. Mothra.”

The cocoon seems to stir, and a rhythmic, pounding heartbeat is heard

_______

It has been a few days, now, and main power has still not been restored to the Arctic Base. All communications systems are down except for a satellite phone with spotty reception at best. Serizawa finally makes contact with a higher-up in the organization, but they are ordered to remain at the base and re-establish power and communications. The outpost was staffed with a small crew to begin with, and things get worse when men and women begin taking ill mysteriously, complaining of excessive fatigue, dementia, even hallucinations and strange thoughts and emotions. Things just feel different around the area. The air is thick. Gravity seems to fluctuate. Outside, the ice itself turns black. All living things near it die, the ocean is full of dead fish. Slowly, the same is happening to those inside the base. People begin dying, some even kill one another in fits of madness until only Serizawa, Serizawa and Graham are left, after a violent struggle in which three men tried to kill them and the adults were forced to shoot them dead, before locking themselves in the “crisis shelter”, an underground portion of the base meant to survive anything. The evil spreads out from Antarctica, to the edges of the other continents, turning vegetation black and wilted, and animals just falling over dead. Something is absorbing the life energy of the planet.

Serizawa hasn’t been able to contact the outside world in days, and the pair fear going outside, as anyone who has ventured outside the base’s walls instantly dies. While trying to make sense of what is happening around them, Graham can’t stop thinking of their three attackers, who seemed to be snarling in some strange language, as if they were being controlled by something… “Ghi” “Do” “Rah” they had screamed, repeating the syllables over and over, until….they spoke no more.

“Ghidorah? What could it mean?” they wonder, huddled together in the cold darkness. Surely this horrible thing, whatever it is, has spread? At this rate, it must need much more energy than could be found here to survive. Their presence there was just enough to wake it up…to whet its appetite for the main course….. them?

No. Something much bigger.

As they fight to remain conscious, the pair hear the unmistakable call of Godzilla, as he emerges from a sea of black ice, bellowing his arrival to the toxic continent. The duo cry in pained relief, Godzilla must have sensed whatever this unstoppable evil was, and come to stop it…to save them….

But….

What if that isn’t what happens at all?

Suddenly, Serizawa looks frantic. Yukiko tries to look hopeful; she’s not yet seen Godzilla in person yet and has been looking very forward to it. Graham tries to reassure Serizawa, but he is adamant “Something feels wrong… Gojira shouldn’t be here…this is completely out of his usual migratory pattern. What if this same corruptive force has drawn him here? What if it changes him, like it did our crew, or feeds on him and becomes stronger? Strong enough to…”

In a massive explosion, a huge chunk of ice erupts underground, sending snow, ice, and earth flying into a black cloud of death. Inside of it is a very different sort of cocoon than the one at the Moth Temple. Black, spiked, and oozing with a corrosive gold liquid…it cracks and hisses as choking steam spews into the air, before breaking open to reveal, dripping with blackish gold ichor an enormous form. Twin golden wings unfurl, majestic under any other circumstances, but horrifying in these. Six eyes that see nothing but prey, three mouths filled with teeth that spew nothing but death, the Destroyer of Worlds… King Ghidorah.

Godzilla howls in rage at the invading evil, buried in the Earth for centuries, and charges….and is instantly rebuked. Cackling with mad rage, Ghidorah moves with speed that defies its mass…which seems to be ever increasing. Godzilla was caught off guard and returned to his feet to launch a second attack, and for a time was able to hold his own in combat with the new monster, but Ghidorah fought fiercely, lashing out with three long necks and clamping its jaws onto Godzilla…leeching and siphoning his energy, his power, his very life force. Growing bigger and more powerful, surging with a forbidden combination of its own life energy and that of Godzilla crackling within its golden body. As Ghidorah absorbed more and more of Godzilla’s essence, the wounds that Godzilla had managed to inflict upon him began to close up and heal on their own…disappearing without a trace…

Godzilla’s vision began to blur. He had but one hope. Destroy the imbalance in nature with his greatest weapon, his atomic death ray. Though the air was thick and dark around them, faint, light blue could be seen running up from the tip of Godzilla’s tail to the top of his head. Ghidorah watched with what could almost be described as amusement. Godzilla’s jaws parted, and…

Ghidorah struck first. With the outer heads each clamping down on a shoulder, and the middle head going right for the ancient protector’s throat, Ghidorah’s wings began flapping, and he showed he had now strength enough to lift their combined weight aloft. Like an impossible vampire, Ghidorah consumed Godzilla’s greatest reserve of power as he flew every higher…until nothing remained. Godzilla’s clenched fists slowly relaxed. His eyes fluttered shut, and with a noise much more a whine than a roar, he fell silent… and then, released by Ghidorah, he plummeted to the ice below, leaving a trail of flame like a meteor, landing with a crash that shattered the very ice that made up the ground. Slowly, he sunk beneath the dark waves, leaving nothing but the partially destroyed Monarch base behind on the continent of death. Death had claimed all… even Godzilla.

Serizawa and Yukiko awoke in the medical center some time later at the Monarch base in Japan. A rescue team had finally been dispatched when they had entered the crisis shelter, automatically triggering an alert. Most of the base had been destroyed by Godzilla and Ghidorah’s battle. Dr. Graham was killed in the explosion, but Serizawa and Yukiko were fortunate enough to have survived. Unfortunately, so did the evidence that Serizawa and Graham had shot three of their colleagues to death; the only other bodies recovered besides their own. For a time, once they were medically deemed fit to be, they were interrogated as to exactly what happened at the now defunct Arctic Base. Both were forced to plead ignorance, as they could remember precious little of the events….until Yukiko recalled there was something the “afflicted” men kept saying…. “…something like…Ghidorah?”

“She is telling the truth.” Everyone suddenly heard in their heads as the Cosmos appeared in the interrogation room. The horrible three headed monster had not been seen since the battle with Godzilla, but the Cosmos were able to confirm it was indeed King Ghidorah that Godzilla had intercepted in the frozen arctic. The Cosmos’ physical forms remained in their temple, but they were able to project psychic images of themselves at will, so it is like they are there in person.

Suddenly, Serizawa remembered… “Gojira! Gojira came to fight Ghidorah. Where is he now?”

All of the cameras and video footage were destroyed in the battle. Everyone in the room looked to the psychic Cosmos for the answer. They looked at each other, then down at the ground. “The one you call Godzilla…. is dead.”

A somber silence fills the room, before the Cosmos “speak” once more. “But do not lose hope. There are others.”

Satellite cameras detected distorted images of a massive golden object traveling through space at high speeds. Monarch scientists would later theorize – correctly – that Ghidorah was absorbing energy from the Sun, to the extent that the enormous star was temporarily dimmed, casting a foreboding pall over the entire Earth. He plummeted back into the Earth’s atmosphere spewing destruction, gravity altering bolts from three mouths that broke apart its targets on a molecular level, causing mass distortion that could collapse a building or mountain alike.

Ghidorah flew over Skull Island, pelting the nearby Monarch base with gravity bolts and reducing it to rubble. Somewhere deep in the jungles of Skull Island came a massive roar, warning the dragon to come no closer….

The Cosmos were asked to elaborate on the “others”. They nodded and closed their eyes. Suddenly, the group including the Cosmos, Serizawa, Serizawa, and a few other Monarch personnel found themselves inside the Temple of the Moth – another demonstration of the twins’ psychic abilities, as the physical bodies of the Monarch crew remained where they were. The Cosmos pointed out and explained various symbols carved into the walls, found etched on pottery, and so on. The Cosmos explained that they served as Gaia’s liaison to humanity. They told of a great prophecy that an evil from the stars, a God of destruction would come to Earth and sleep for many years before waking. The Earth..Gaia… knew about Ghidorah, and so it set about creating its own defenses and burying THEM deep within the planet’s surface, to emerge when Earth most needed defending. Some of Gaia’s children were corrupted, though…perhaps by Ghidorah’s influence, or by forces unknown. The Skullcrawlers and the MUTOs, for example.

Some had already awakened to fulfill their roles as protectors….such as the mighty King Kong, and… Godzilla.

Others still slept. Most were not ready to fight…they were not strong enough and would simply be cannon fodder for Ghidorah. The timing of this all was very unfortunate; the Cosmos and Gaia knew that Ghidorah would awaken one day….but it was not supposed to be for many years. As such, only two of the Earth’s Guardians were ready to awaken: the Guardian of Fire, Rodan, and the Guardian of Life, Mothra. Rodan, they explained, much like fire itself, was prideful and unpredictable, and left to burn unchecked could consume the entire world as well…which was where Mothra came in. Mothra was the Guardian most closely linked to the Cosmos. The ancient people that once lived here worshipped Mothra, a benevolent monster deeply in tune with the life on Earth. Under normal circumstances, Mothra is immortal, with an ever-repeating life cycle, however if she were to fall in battle and disrupt that life cycle….it would be disastrous for all life on Earth.

Yukiko spoke up, breaking the uneasy silence. She called the Cosmos’ attention to a carving that showed what looked like Godzilla battling an enormous butterfly… or moth. She asked why Godzilla would have fought Mothra. The Cosmos seemed reluctant to answer, but finally told the story behind the artwork. Godzilla was the first Guardian to be created….dubbed the Guardian of Earth. Godzilla watched over all living things and kept nature in check, assuring that no lifeforms grew strong enough to threaten the delicate balance of life on the planet. For a time, life on Earth was very peaceful.

Another mural shows Godzilla watching as a giant meteor crashed to Earth. The Cosmos explained this was the extinction of the dinosaurs…this was when life on Earth truly changed. The meteor is revealed as the vessel Ghidorah traveled to Earth in. Godzilla wanted to destroy this impurity, but Ghidorah was deep down In the Earth, in a frozen region, hiding away from Godzilla. Ghidorah’s arrival brought about many changes on Earth…most significantly, the evolution of the first species with the capability for malice. The first species that took joy in destruction, and in evil. That species was man.

Mankind grew and learned and began to build terrible weapons to wage war on one another. Godzilla grew angry at humans and wished to destroy them…but Gaia felt compassion for these misguided creatures, and so, Gaia created Mothra, the Guardian of Life, to watch over the humans, to help bring out the good she felt was inside of them. Godzilla defied Gaia and attacked the first humans, who were powerless before the great beast, but Mothra intervened and battled Godzilla to a standstill. Mothra appealed to Godzilla to spare the humans, and offered to take responsibility for them, and Godzilla finally agreed to a truce. It was decided that Godzilla needed to grow stronger to battle Ghidorah when the alien monster one day awoke, and so Godzilla returned to his home deep inside the Earth to hibernate and draw strength from the planet. To the shock of all, the Cosmos reveal that long ago, human scholars had found parts of these records and mistranslated them to write some of the Bible, with Godzilla and Mothra becoming God and Jesus, and Satan, the Devil who fell from the skies to lurk beneath the ground…..King Ghidorah. (That would….probably be a deleted scene. LOL. Talk about controversial…. )

“I don’t believe it….” Serizawa whispers.

“The past does not rely on belief. It simply is.” The Cosmos state. “The future however, can be changed. For the good or the bad. There are prophecies….even if Ghidorah is defeated….that Godzilla will….” The Cosmos state and exchange worried glances, but refuse to elaborate.

In a flash, the group was once again in the Monarch base. They never actually left, not physically. The Cosmos took them on a journey through their minds, they explained. Reports are coming in that King Ghidorah was sighted over the Monarch facility in Siberia. Grainy video footage is viewed of the dragon circling overhead as if searching for something, before pelting the base with a volley of gravity beams before continuing on his way. For hours, Ghidorah flies over the globe almost erratically, at incredible speeds, bringing destruction with him. The very air that surrounded the monster seemed sickly, as plant life rotten as he flew over rainforests and jungles. The Monarch team watched, horrified, as Ghidorah seemed to absorb the life force of the animals near him. The Cosmos answered a question no one had dared ask; “If King Ghidorah continues at this rate…all life on Earth will be extinct in…five days and twenty two hours. We must wake Rodan.”

“Come in! Anyone! Everyone!” a panicked voice exclaimed from the communications console. The engineer seated under the screen pressed a button, and a shaking image appeared on the screen being streamed from the Puerto Rico Monarch base, where a great deal of shouting could be heard, along with a loud rumble. “I thought this volcano was dormant!?” someone exclaimed. “Is it Ghidorah?!” another worried voice asked. “This is Isla de Mona facility Commander Adams, I repeat, the volcano appears to be erupting, please deploy nearest rescue squ-“

“Please. Remain calm. You will not be harmed….” The reassuring voice of the Cosmos spoke inside the mind of everyone involved. Despite the situation, a calming sensation appeared to take hold on the people, but the volcano itself continued rumbling and shaking, leading to a massive explosion of flame and thick, black smoke filling the sky. An ear splitting shriek is heard, as a figure is just barely visible through the smoke and flames. Perched atop the volcano is an enormous flying monster, many times bigger than any known species of pterosaur, and the creature began flapping its massive twin wings, blowing the smoke away. The beast stretched and roared again, as if yawning from awakening from a long nap. He tilted his head, sniffing the air through the nostrils in his beak, completely unconcerned with the scorching hot magma dripping from his body. The creature paused, then nodded as if it found what it was looking for, and took to the air, flying with unbelievable grace and speed…and then it was gone.

“Rodan?” Takarada correctly assumed, which the Cosmos confirmed with identical nods of their heads. “Rodan is going to fight Ghidorah…but…he will be no match for the Devil by himself…”. The Cosmos sounded worried as they held each other’s hand for comfort.

“Won’t Mothra help him?” Yukiko asked.

“Yes. Soon. She has not yet attained her mature form….” The Cosmos replied. The door to the control center opened suddenly and in strode a very confident man, flanked by two armed guards, attracting the attention of everyone, including the psychic priestesses. “Oh! Commander Tsuburaya!” Serizawa spoke with a hint of surprise. It was rare that Akira Tsuburaya visited the Janjira base, though he was in command; his primary duties kept him closely working with the highest of higher ups in Monarch.

“Serizawa. I am pleased that your neice and yourself made it back to us. A shame about Doctor Graham. We mourn her loss.”

Serizawa wondered how true that was; it was on Tsuburaya’s orders that he was “promoted” to the ill-fated Arctic Base,

“As do we…” Serizawa said softly. “If I ever have to go back there again it’ll be too soon…”

“Then you’re really not going to like what I have to say.” Tsuburaya said humorlessly. Serizawa and Yukiko exchanged a worried glance. Akira turned to the Cosmos for a moment. “These must be our new psychic friends? Yes. I’ve already been briefed on you. And on Godzilla. But I like to see things with my own eyes…” the Commander explained.

Yukiko interjected “Then why don’t YOU go and look for Godzilla?”, guessing what Tsuburaya had in mind. “Yuki!” Serizawa hissed under his breath, but Akira raised a hand for silence. “I’m afraid I can’t do that. I’ve got other fires to put out at the moment…literally. The entire world knows about King Ghidorah now, and they’re all looking at US for help. And by “us”, they really mean “Godzilla”. These people have gotten it into their heads somehow that Godzilla is Monarch’s…mascot, for lack of a better word. Like we can push a little red button and he’ll jump out of the ocean to do our bidding. And if those people all find out Godzilla is dead….well, the last thing we need right now is more panic, yes? We’ve had units fly over the.. former… base site, and there is no body; no trace at all of Godzilla. Serizawa, you’ve got the most knowledge of Godzilla in this entire organization,” Tsuburaya continued, and Serizawa nodded grimly, knowing there was no one else who could compare.

“This isn’t a suicide mission by any means. You’ll be completely safe…now…this is highly classified material….but, we’re all Monarch here, and there’s no hiding things from psychics, is there, girls?” Tsuburaya asked the Cosmos, who blushed, looking to the floor.

The Commander approached the center console and tapped in a series of keystrokes, and the words “CLASSIFIED – PROJECT SENKAN: ATRAGON” appeared on the screen. “You know there are different ideas on how Monarch should proceed into this world of gods and monsters. Be we careful observers, or willing combatants….. the Atragon is both. The most powerful aquatic weapon the world has ever known, equipped with state of the art weaponry and a full science lab. The culmination of fifteen years of work.” Tsuburaya said proudly.

“I thought it was only a rumor….” Serizawa whispered.

The view on the screen had changed to a hidden underground hanger on the coast, where an enormous vessel was suspended above the water. The Atragon was a submarine on steroids. “It….certainly has a lot of cannons for a science and observation vessel….” Serizawa remarked.

“And who exactly is going to pilot this thing?” Graham asked, looking at the gigantic craft wide eyed.

Tsuburaya smiled and told Yuki and Serizawa to pack their bags, and promised to introduce them to the answer of that question….

Tsuburaya lead Serizawa, Yukiko, and the projections of the Cosmos deep under the base, swiping several different keycards and undergoing palm and retina scans to get where they were going. Yukiko and Ishiro exchanged glances, they had begun to get lost among the endless identical corridors…just what else did Monarch have hidden, tucked away in secret? Eventually, they arrived at the docking area just in time to see the massive Atragon slowly lowered into the water. They were met by the amazing vessel by a burly American with dark hair and eyes, a bushy mustache and a large vertical scar on his face. (Don Frye, reprising his character from Godzilla: Final Wars, because he amuses the shit out of me. This will never actually happen but this is my movie so hush. No, Final Wars does not exist in this film’s universe; in fact, there is no universe it SHOULD exist in.) Tsuburaya spoke, “Doctor Ishiro Serizawa, Miss Yukiko Serizawa? Meet Captain Gordon.”

Gordon extended a huge, calloused hand to each of them, and they both winced from the force of the man’s grip as they exchanged pleasantries. “They will be joining you on the Atragon’s first mission.”

“Yeah. About that.” Gordon started. “What exactly are we doing? You people are more tight lipped than my high school girlfriend.” He said with a smirk.

“You will be traveling in secret. There is simply no time to clear this mission with international governments. Stay as deep as you can; the Atragon is undetectable to radar and can survive at almost any depth. You are to journey to the…former…Arctic base, and you are to locate Godzilla. Or should I say….his corpse.”

Serizawa felt a twinge of pain and regret, he couldn’t help but feel partially responsible for Godzilla’s demise, though he knew there was little logic in it. Godzilla and Ghidorah were destined to clash one day. Serizawa doubted they even knew a mere pawn like he existed. Still, there was something sad about the fact that the celebrated monster Godzilla, dubbed “King of the Monsters” by the thankful people he saved after the battle of San Fransisco, perished quietly and out of sight, in a battle that in the grand scheme of things didn’t really seem to matter. The great creature should be remembered.

“I’ll need you to confirm that Godzilla is indeed dead, and if possible bring back some biological material for further study.” Tsuburaya spoke with no trace of emotion, the opposite of Serizawa who is still clearly mourning the loss of his colleagues and Godzilla.

“Gojira is not some… frog to be dissected…” he frowned, unfocused eyes forward.

Before anyone else could speak, the “hiss” of the automatic door sliding open cut through the silence and a familiar voice asked. “You got room for one more on that boat?”

There in the doorway, framed by the light of the hall outside as if walking out of Heaven, stood a Caucasian man in his early sixties, world-weary smile on his face.

“Joe Brody.” Serizawa smiled, finally, recognizing another friendly face.

“Wait….that name sounds so familiar….” Yukiko scrunched up her face in thought, as the newcomer and her uncle exchanged what started as a handshake, and then – to Ishiro Serizawa’s embarrassment – became a hug. The men turned to her with amused looks on their faces, waiting for her to figure it out. Finally it clicked. “You….you’re…your son was the one who blew up the MUTO nest…and you’re dead!!” she insisted, prodding Joe’s chest with an accusatory finger, finding he was solid and not a ghost.

“Well, you’re technically correct…my paycheck has the name Hal Wilkerson on it….” Joe said with a smile, finding the young woman even more confused.

“You want to tell her?” Joe (Bryan Cranston) asked Ishiro in Japanese. The following explanation would be accompanied by flashback footage from GODZILLA (2014), of Joe’s lifeless body aboard the helicopter with his son. Then later of Joe waking up in a strange bed looking disheveled and confused.

“When Mr. Brody and I first met, the world, and Monarch, were very different. We were not ready to come out of the shadows, but Mr. Brody insisted on dragging us out, kicking and screaming, as it were. When the first MUTO awoke at the Janjira site, Joe was injured, which was bad for him, and was going to tell the world about what he’d seen there, which was bad for us. To save his life-“

“And to shut me up. Admit it, Doc.” Brody quipped. Serizawa sighed and continued. “TO SAVE HIS LIFE….he was placed into a medically induced coma. We….TEMPORARILY…..allowed his son to think he had died, a regrettable choice but the only one to be made at the time. He was transported to one of our facilities and nursed back to health, at which point he…became a member of Monarch.”

“By which he means they had me sign non-disclosure paperwork and put me on the payroll to keep me quiet.” Joe said with a wink.

“Six of one, half a dozen of the other.” Serizawa replied.

“This is all just…I mean….. holy shit…..” Yukiko said, taking everything in and staring at Joe in disbelief.

“Yukiko! Language! My apologies Joe, she is an impulsive one…” Serizawa stuttered.

“Aw, don’t worry about it, Doc….before the transfer we lived in America, after all – I think Ford’s first word was actually ‘fu-“ Joe began before a gruff voice shouted over him.

“Fellas? Can we do this whole catching up crap on the road? I don’t get paid by the hour!” Gordon shouted over his shoulder as he boarded the Atragon.

“I just can’t believe this dude is alive, even his son claims he died in 2014!” Yukiko insisted.

“Hey, it would be pretty lame if I died before Godzilla even showed up.” Brody smirked. (He’s looking directly at the camera here, at the audience, in a ‘fuck your 4th wall’ scene. Pause for laughter. Then the camera angle switches to show he’s looking at Serizawa, who just shakes his head)

The sub is next seen departing the base. Gordon is the lone pilot, which seems amazing considering the amount of buttons, switches and tiny screens on the instrument panel before him. A large, curved sword is mounted on the wall, looking somewhat out of place. “You do everything on the ship yourself?!” Yukiko exclaimed wide eyed. “That’s right little lady.” Gordon chuckled. “The life expectancy for fightin’ giant monsters ain’t exactly top of the charts, know what I mean? So they wanted to make sure one guy could do everything vital to operations, so a partial loss of flight crew wouldn’t cripple us without backup on board. Don’t worry – I never set foot in the science lab, I’ll leave that to you eggheads.”

“But, Captain?” Yuki prodded further. “What happens if YOU die; who’s your backup?”

Gordon scowled at her, his mighty brow wrinkled. “…..you ask too many questions, anybody ever tell you that? Get off my bridge.”

Yukiko’s lips turned into a pout, and she backed off…but remained there for a time, watching everything Gordon did over his shoulder, taking mental notes.

Back at the main Monarch base, Commander Tsuburaya was monitoring the activity of Ghidorah and Rodan. From the best of their tracking capabilities, it seemed that Rodan had been pursuing Ghidorah all across the Earth, but Ghidorah had managed to stay several hundred miles away from him at all time. Ghidorah wasn’t scared of Rodan…he was simply toying with him….

Brody and Serizawa were inspecting the Atragon’s science lab and taking inventory of the equipment. “It looks like none of this has even been touched. It’s pristine….” Brody remarked. “Well do you think that caveman Gordon spends much time down here?” Serizawa quipped, as he found and plugged in a coffee maker. “Caveman? Come on, Ishiro. Neanderthal maybe, but caveman? Be fair.”

Time passes, and the small crew arrive in the Arctic. Godzilla’s body is located. The entire group gathers on the bridge. Gordon presses a button that fires a long range probe into the unmoving monster. It reports back a frigid body temperature and confirms what they already knew in their hearts; Godzilla is dead.

“Alright, yer pet lizard bit the big one, now what?” Gordon asked.

Images and data were sent back to Tsuburaya to confirm Godzilla’s death. However, that was only the first part of their mission. They were also tasked with collecting and studying biological material from the corpse; Godzilla cells. “Y’all take yer time on that.” Gordon said, reclining in his chair and kicking his feet back.

“I am a grown ass woman and I am going!” Yukiko insisted as she hurried behind Joe and Serizawa as they walked side by side through the hallways.

“You are still my niece, first, and my intern second – you will do as I say! This is too dangerous!” Serizawa insisted.

“Hey, speaking of that… niece, huh? You never even told me you had a….” Brody let the pause hang in the air, indicating that Serizawa should finish the sentence for him.

“Brother.” He sighed. “Daisuke. My brother. He….does not hold the same reverence for Gojira. He works for the weapons division of Monarch. We have not spoken since…”

“Since I chose to intern with Uncle Ishiro instead. Dad’s a jerk.” Yukiko rolled her eyes. “I don’t know what his problem is. Godzilla’s awesome….was awesome.” She sadly corrects herself. The men suit up in aquatic HAZMAT suits with masks, oxygen tanks, the whole deal, grabbing some scientific instruments, they depart the super-sub. Yukiko returns to the bridge to watch their progress on the main view screen.

Gordon looks up. “Hey, what’s your story, anyway? You eighteen or….?”

“Eww.” Is all she says back.

The two men swim through the murky deeps and reach Godzilla. Serizawa places a hand on the monster’s snout, bowing his head in reverence. “You did not fail the planet, Gojira-san. We did.”

Godzilla’s mighty body lay still and broken, limbs splayed out, his armored hide in tatters from where Ghidorah’s vampiric bite punctured him, shredded him…

Brody allows Serizawa his moment before setting to work, scraping/cutting off some of Godzilla’s skin to bring back to the lab. If Ghidorah had not drained all of Godzilla’s energy, the wound would heal instantly. Instead, the small cuts remain. The somber silence is broken as the mens’ radios crackle to life. “Boys, you may wanna high tail it back here. Big Bird’s caught up to the Three Headed Grouch….”

The normally-busy streets of New York City have taken on a chaotic feel never before seen. Cars are ramming into each other, horns blaring, pedestrians jumping out of the way to avoid being mowed down… but as the camera pans up through Times Square, that’s nothing compared to what’s going on in the skies.

Ghidorah’s massive wings flap as he hovers in one place – a feat that should be impossible for a being his size and more suited to a hummingbird – but Ghidorah is not of this Earth and capable of manipulating gravity all around him. Rodan circles him, howling a roar of challenge. Ghidorah seems to laugh at the smaller monster and beckons him to try it with his curling wings. Rodan propels himself forward, teeth bared, and Ghidorah avoids him like a matador, baiting him with his wing. Rodan circles around without pausing and tries again, but with insane agility, Ghidorah moves aside. Rodan howls in anger and does an upwards loop to try and fake Ghidorah out, then flies straight towards him doing a barrel roll (showing off everything he can do without the limitation of suits/wires) and this time Ghidorah roars back and flies towards him head on in the world’s largest ever game of chicken. This time it is Rodan who makes an evasive maneuver, darting aside at the last second. Ghidorah’s size and momentum makes it harder for him to stop, and before he can turn, Rodan slams into his back; talons latching onto him, piercing his golden scales, as Rodan furious pecks at Ghidorah’s back, trying to penetrate the thick scaled armor at the base of each neck. The battle rages in the air as the two monsters grapple with each other. Ghidorah eventually pries Rodan off, using his three heads/necks to hurl Rodan away. Rodan crashes into a cluster of skyscrapers which are destroyed, clouds of dust and smoke rising up into the sky. Rodan shakes it off and takes flight just as Ghidorah slams into the ground; he was attempting to flatten Rodan. Ghidorah is now standing on his feet, twin tails lashing behind him. Rodan circles overhead, Ghidorah’s three heads looking up, all six eyes fixed on him. A salvo of missiles slam into Ghidorah, who shrugs it off as barely an annoyance, firing a barrage of gravity beams that totally wipe out the jet fighter squadron that had fired upon him.

Rodan pounces on this distraction with a new ability; vomiting a stream of molten lava onto Ghidorah, a glowing orange spray from his beak. The space monster hisses and recoils as his skin sizzles and boils from the extreme heat, but in seconds, the wounds disappear. Ghidorah has absorbed Godzilla’s regenerative powers. Ghidorah sneers up at Rodan, almost smiling. Now Rodan experiences a new emotion; fear. He takes flight, and this time, it is Ghidorah who is the pursuer.

The monsters race through the clouds, Rodan flapping his wings at a furious pace as he dives and dodges through the air to avoid Ghidorah’s lightning-like gravity bolts. Eventually, fatigue sets in, and Rodan’s speed drops. Furious, he turns to face Ghidorah, refusing to go down in retreat, his screech of defiance echoes through the skies…. Before being totally silenced by three on-target gravity bolts. Rodan flutters backwards, then spirals into a dive, plummeting into the Atlantic Ocean off the southeast coast of New York.

Ghidorah follows, diving beneath the waves.

Tsuburaya’s teeth clench in silent anger as he watches from Monarch HQ. “The military is useless. Rodan is down. The Atragon crew has confirmed Godzilla’s death….just what is Mothra waiting for!?”

And just what good is a giant butterfly against King Ghidorah, for that matter…. He added silently in his head.

“You will soon see, Commander.” The voice of the Cosmos replied. Tsuburaya jumps.

And with that, Mothra’s ancient temple begins to quake. Statues topple, walls collapse, the very structure itself seems to be sinking into the forest around it. The sky is filled with dark, angry stormclouds, but a radiant beam of light streams straight down from above, and the clouds part, and the beam centers on the middle of the crumbling temple, and in response a prism of all the colors of the rainbow reach out in all directions, as a massive shape skyrockets upwards; up the shining beacon. Enormous wings unfurl, and a piercing cry sounds out as Mothra reveals herself. She is cloaked in light, and the clouds scatter as she draws near, leaving a massive pile of debris underneath her where the site of her temple once stood. The Cosmos are seen levitating in the air above the rubble, hands clasped, watching Mothra depart with worried admiration.

“Well, are we screwed or are we screwed?” Gordon asked over the com system as Brody and Serizawa board the Atragon. The pair ignore him and hurry to the lab. “Guess I’m talkin’ to myself, eh Yuk-…” Gordon looks over his shoulder expecting to see Yukiko but she too has left. “Finally…” he sighs, and releases a long, voluminous fart that echos throughout the bridge area.

“EWWWWWWWW!” Yukiko yells over the intercom, as Gordon curses as he realized he forgot to shut off communications.

Elsewhere beneath the depths, Rodan growls with pain as he drags himself along the ocean floor, his spiked chestplate leaving deep gouges in the wet earth. Rodan looks over his ‘shoulder’ as he hears Ghidorah’s gurgling cry taunting him in the distance, and Rodan resolves to move faster. A rage burns inside of him, hating himself for trying to flee, for losing….that would be where it would end. He would not give the three headed monster the satisfaction of killing him. Yellow undersea lights flash and pulse in the distance behind Rodan, as Ghidorah continues unleashing senseless destruction from his mouths. As they draw ever closer, the ground gives way beneath Rodan, and he plummets deeper with a howling call….right into an undersea volcano. The heat of first the water, and then the lava, wash over him. He drinks it in. His eye flutters shut….then opens wide, new life inside it. He is rejuvenated, but still no match for Ghidorah – not by himself.

The volcano erupted around him as he propelled himself upwards – past Ghidorah’s snapping jaws. Rodan shot up out of the water like a missile, with Ghidorah mere feet behind, literally snapping at his heels. Ghidorah emerges from the water, blinking the water from his eyes (the camera shot is also distorted with water drop effects, obscuring something huge in the sky above Ghidorah that Rodan flies past).

Suddenly the huge shape expands – it’s Mothra and she spreads her wings, emitting a blinding flash of light that disorients Ghidorah. Ghidorah’s heads start snapping at one another in the confusion, and he plummets back into the water a tangled, golden mass of rage. Mothra gives a chirp of satisfaction and turns to follow after Rodan. A shot of Ghidorah falling deep into the trenches is shown, lights flickering in the darkness as he sinks. A similar darkness appears in the skies as the dark storm clouds return after Mothra has gone.

“Ya gotta be shittin’ me…..” Gordon laughed at the helm of the world’s most expensive underwater vehicle. “Boys back at HQ are telling me a big butterfly scared off Monster Zero”

“Mothra…..” Serizawa and Yukiko said in unison, looking up from their work in the lab. “If Mothra has already awoke, then….with Gojira gone….we are truly out of options. We will have to work quickly.” Serizawa said.

“Work? On what? I mean, what can we do from here?” Yukiko asked.

“Come here.” Serizawa beckoned her to a table with a pair of microscopes, inviting her to look at the first.

“Okaaaaaay….. it’s, like, tiny black blobs. What am I looking at, Uncle?”

“Those are Gojira’s cells.”

“They’re dead…..”

“Precisely. But, now, come and look here…..” Ishiro said, daring to let the tiniest bit of hope shine through his somber tone.

“It’s the same….” Yukiko said. “Yes, but, observe. I’m injecting a very low level radioactive isotope.”

“Oh, good, now he tells me its RADIO-FREAKING-ACTIVE!” Yukiko shouted, looking up at Brody for support, who held up his hands. “Don’t look at me, kid, he’s your Uncle….”

As a greenish liquid was introduced into Godzilla’s cells, the strangest thing happened before Yukiko’s eyes…the various globs of matter began to pulse, and reach out towards one another with tiny tendrils….and they began to knit back together.

“They’re regenerating?!” Yukiko asked in awe.

“It seems so. And if it is possible on a microscopic level….” Serizawa began, and Joe snapped his fingers, completing the thought. “A LARGER reaction might…..” “HEAL GODZILLA!!” Joe and Yukiko said together. Serizawa looked up, smiling. “It is possible. Whatever we did to Gojira in 1954, it made him bigger. Stronger. He’s been growing and changing ever since. If we could possibly force-feed him a massive amount of radiation….it could jumpstart his heart – his reactor – and heal the damage done by Ghidorah!”

“But where are we going to get that much radiation?” Yukiko asked.

“What kinda heat is this baby packing?” Brody asked Serizawa.

Serizawa raised an eyebrow. “Let us find out.”

“You wanna do WHAT? Run that by me again, egghead.” Gordon asked, rolling a toothpick between his thumb and finger before placing it back between his teeth.

“I KNOW it is a long shot, Captain, but if the reports we are hearing are correct….Rodan and Mothra will only slow Ghidorah down – ONLY Gojira can stop him.” Serizawa said gravely.

“If there’s a chance – NO MATTER HOW SMALL – we have to take it. We owe it to ourselves, and….to those who aren’t here anymore. Those who died because of Ghidorah, because of the MUTOs…For Sandra….” Joe pleaded.

“For Doctor Graham, and all that perished in the Arctic…” Serizawa stated.

“For Godzilla!” Yukiko implored.

“For fuck’s sake…” Gordon sighed. “Look, you people need to understand something. Unleashing the full nuclear arsenal of the Atragon without explicit authorization from my superiors could get my ass served up on a plate….Tsuburaya is never gonna go for this….”

The three looked down at once, deflated, but a twinkle remained in Gordon’s eye.

“So if that tight-ass asks….just tell him my finger slipped.” Gordon smiled, and he busied himself with a speed and proficiency that betrayed his brutish demeanor. “Arming torpedoes. Locked on Godzilla. Here we go, baby….” Gordon pressed a final button, and the Atragon shook with a several of WHOOSHES as the torpedoes raced towards Godzilla, detonating against the dead monster’s body….

When the bubbles faded and the water calmed down….

“I.. I had hoped…” Serizawa choked on his words. Hoped for what? That Godzilla would give them a nod in thanks, spring to his feet and swim to the surface, no worse for wear?

“Well….that’s a whole lotta nothin’, ain’t it, Doc?” Gordon grumbled.

“No…. it had to work….” Yukiko whined.

“….at least we tried.” Brody said quietly.

Godzilla lay just as he was, with several charred impact spots on his corpse. Serizawa felt deep shame for what he now viewed as desecrating that corpse.

“Don’t beat yerselves up. Hell. It was a good idea….” Gordon sighed. “Alright. Everybody settle in. I’m gonna radio HQ that we’re on the way home with the G-Cells, and HOPEFULLY I won’t have to explain the missing nuclear goddamn warheads…”

“WAIT!” Yukiko cried. Gordon froze, hand hovering above the lever to activate the rear thrusters.

“Can you zoom the screen in?” Yukiko asked. “Of course I can, you think they’re gonna pour a zillion yen into this thing and not put a zoom funct-“ “JUST DO IT!” Yukiko insisted. Gordon flinched and cracked a slight smile. “Magnifying.” He said, as Godzilla began growing in size on the screen as the view drew nearer. “Look at the wounds!”

Everyone did. It was barely noticeable, in fact it was astounding Yuki had caught it BEFORE the magnification, but….sure enough, the impact sites were closing up, as new skin formed over the gaping wounds. Gordon’s fingers were a blur on the console. “Accessing probe data…..” he muttered, holding up a hand for silence. If Godzilla had a heartbeat, they should be able to hear it.

They waited…and waited…. And waited.

*THUMP*

Rodan and Mothra raced side by side above the clouds like a pair of enormous fighter jets. Mothra’s light enveloped them, and they looked at one another, seemingly communicating as they flew. Rodan nodded his head gratefully, Mothra chirped back. They heard a sizzling noise behind them, and Mothra screeched in alarm; the pair parted wide, and the three crackling gravity bolts singed the air where they flew a second prior. Somehow, despite their sizeable head start, Ghidorah had recovered and was gaining on them. Rodan roared and picked up his speed, Mothra did the same. They nodded at one another and split up, each flying in a different direction to try and frustrate Ghidorah. They did not linger to see which path the golden menace would follow.

Meanwhile back on the Atragon, Godzilla’s heart rate was gradually increasing….and that wasn’t all. “Hate to kill the feel-good moment, folks, but we gotta get the Hell outta here. The Geiger counter is about to max out, and I don’t wanna be here when it does.”

“But, Godzilla…” Yukiko began, and Gordon shook his head. “Godzilla’s gonna do whatever he does with or without us.” The Captain didn’t wait for a reply, the craft lurched as it began to move. Everyone, even Gordon, watched Godzilla’s still form grow smaller in the distance as they pulled away, until he was lost in the darkness.

The silence was broken as they received a call from Commander Tsuburaya. Gordon took it on his headset, so only he could hear. From his responses, the rest of the crew exchanged uneasy glances.

“Now, sir? Yeah, I get that, but….but that ain’t what these folks signed up for.. no, I understand. No sir. Yes sir. Yes sir.” Gordon ripped off his headset and growled “Kiss my ass, sir…”

At first, no one dared to speak, until Yukiko asked the question on everyone’s mind “Where are we going?”

Gordon sighed, rubbing his temple as he laid in a course on autopilot, swiveling in his chair to face the group. “Well….despite my objections….we’re being called into the fight against King Ghidorah. The HQ isn’t safe at the moment, and in their infinite wisdom, Monarch hasn’t built any other docking facilities for the Atragon, so… I can’t drop you all off first. I will do my god damndest to keep you all safe, but….I can’t promise…”

Serizawa cleared his throat to speak up. “We understand, Captain. This is bigger than any one of us. This is some real….as you might say…. ‘fate-of-the-whole-fucking-world shit’.” Serizawa said with a sad smile. That got a grin out of Yukiko, a stunned look from Joe, and a big guffaw out of Gordon. “Well alright then! Let’s go kick us some three headed ass!”

“Where is Ghidorah now, anyway?” Brody asked.

Gordon paused before answering. “Laying waste to Japan.”

Serizawa had somehow known the answer. He fished in his pocket and closed his hand around his father’s pocket-watch, silently asking the universe How many times must my homeland be destroyed?

As if drawn to Japan by some strange instinct, Ghidorah flew over the skies, raining down destruction. The Self Defense Force deployed all of its weapons, but all the helicopters, tanks and jets they could muster were decimated by the giant beast. Rodan continued to attempt to evade the larger monster, flying low to the ground to create separation between the two. The shockwaves caused by Rodan’s flight generated a great deal of collateral damage, sending buildings, bridges, cars, and anything else in his path scattering in the wind. The sun was setting behind Mount Fuji, which under any other circumstances would be a beautiful image of national pride, but on this day the red orb gave the impression that the sky was bleeding slowly to death. Rodan pulled up, flying straight towards the setting sun, hoping to disorient Ghidorah with its light as Mothra had done previously, but the sun didn’t provide the same effect. Rodan felt a single gravity bolt graze his chest, eliciting a shower of sparks. A glancing blow to an armored area, but still a painful one that disrupted his flight.

Where had Mothra gone?! Rodan’s eyes narrowed in anger, feeling abandoned. He was tired of this. If he was to die, it would be in a blaze of glory, head on. Not in retreat. He scanned the landscape for something, anything, to give him an advantage. His reptilian eyes landed on Tokyo Tower, a massive tower several times his own height. Rodan glided faster towards the enormous structure. His talons gripped the architecture at around the halfway point, snapping off a five hundred foot long chunk of prefabricated steel with a narrowed tip. Shifting the heavy weight in his claws, he positioned it pointing forward, and screamed a cry of hatred. Fortune smiled upon the God of Fire, as Ghidorah’s furious barrage of yellow energy blasts raced all around him, but never once touched him. Ghidorah realized all too late what Rodan had done, and with a thrust forward of his legs, Rodan plunged the tower into Ghidorah’s chest like a gigantic lance. It was Ghidorah’s turn, now, to feel something new.

PAIN.

With a confused series of pained cries, Ghidorah plummeted to the ground, landing in an industrial area (like the oil refinery areas – is that what they are called? – with the huge circular ‘tank’ buildings, the towers that belch flame and smoke, etc). Rodan hovered above and regurgitated a huge quantity of magma from his gullet, focusing it into a concentrated stream that ignited everything around Ghidorah. Even the huge space monster was engulfed by the size of the explosion, the largest Japan had seen since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Rodan himself was thrown backwards away from the blast. He righted himself in the air and managed to remain there; unharmed by the temperatures and the flames, just disoriented from the concussive forces.

Through the smoke and flames, he could just barely make out what was left of King Ghidorah; a charred skeleton with clumps of muscle, flesh, and organs here and there….black, shriveled organs that grew anew, shedding the charred ash, a heart that continued to beat. Skin that grew back where it had been burned away. The gaping hole in his chest grew together, right over the melted steel of the tower.

THE BEAST STILL LIVED.

Rodan fled. He flew as high and as fast as he could. He did not know where he was going, nor did he care. All that mattered was making sure Ghidorah could not catch up to him, once his wings were restored. The explosion had attracted something else; Mothra. She nearly collided with Rodan in mid-air. Rodan was panicked and angry at being abandoned; Mothra had her reasons, but how could she make him understand? How could Rodan communicate how urgent the situation was; just how powerful Ghidorah was?

As it happened, he wouldn’t have to. In a flash of golden speed, Ghidorah was on Rodan. He gripped him in his claws and plummeted with him to the Earth, jaws snapping in vengeful anger. Rodan tried to avoid, jerking his head this way and that, with Mothra in pursuit. Ghidorah slammed Rodan into the ground with earth shattering force, leaving a crater from the impact. Rodan tried to move, squawking weakly. Ghidorah surged with crackling energy, ready to deliver the killing blow. With a shriek, Mothra appeared, slashing at Ghidorah’s bobbing and weaving heads with her sharp foreclaws. She moved so fast her limbs were a blur, Ghidorah snapping those horrid jaws all the while. Both landed blows, shredding flesh and spilling blood. Mothra turned and flew away, and Ghidorah gave chase, leaving Rodan broken and battered, a smoldering wreck.

“How far from ground zero are we?” Brody asked. “About an hour, give or take.” Gordon answered. Suddenly, the sonar began to beep like crazy, showing something HUGE heading their way – and just as quickly surging past them, rocking the vessel from side to side.

“God dammit!” Gordon cried, holding tight to his chair.

“No.” Serizawa said slyly. “Godzilla.”

Now it was Mothra’s turn to duck, dodge, and dive through the skies to avoid the killing rays of Ghidorah. It was fortunately she possessed the graceful speed that she did, unlike Rodan she had no natural armor. Mothra was a bit of a ‘glass cannon’ she hit well, and hit hard, but simply could not take a tremendous amount of damage without breaking. And breaking her was all Ghidorah cared about. He’d drained enough energy from the Earth itself after millions of years to finally awaken; and had evolved into the planet’s new Alpha after stealing Godzilla’s regenerative abilities and putting the former King to death.

Mothra emitted a cloud of choking dust from her abdomen, and Ghidorah was slowed by it, choking and gagging, losing altitude as the effects of the pollen paralyzed his muscles temporarily, but his stolen regenerative properties sped up his metabolism to an incredible rate, and he processed the poison quickly, overcoming what would have otherwise been near fatal.

The two monsters continued their aerial dance of death, as Rodan clung to consciousness on the ground, trying to will himself back into the fight. Mothra is just nimble enough to avoid all of Ghidorah’s projectiles…. But she can’t do so forever. She begins to tire, her rapidly-flapping wings slowing, and she tucks into a dive to rest them and get away from Ghidorah. Eventually, Ghidorah stops firing, and everything becomes quiet. Too quiet. Mothra hovers in place to rest.

Suddenly, Ghidorah appears in front of Mothra, heading straight for her, fangs bared. Mothra avoids, but Ghidorah’s twin tails lash her as he flies past, and she plummets towards the ground, landing near Rodan. Mothra attempts to crawl atop Rodan to shield him from what’s coming. Ghidorah lands nearby, throwing his heads back, roaring triumphantly. If he could do a “villain laugh”, this is it. He begins to surge with power, preparing to obliterate the two Earth monsters. Mothra gives a long, sad cry of lament….Rodan sneers up at Ghidorah as if to say ‘bring it on, bitch….’ Ghidorah of course is all too happy to oblige….

*SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOONNNNNK!!!!!!!!*

Ghidorah whirls in surprise, and there stands Godzilla. Drenched with water, crackling with energy. He has changed. He’s grown taller (but still not as tall as KG), his spines have grown – they look like Godzilla 2000’s, but smaller, and are now tinted a shade of dark blue – his arms, toenails and claws are all more pronounced, his tail is thicker… this is SUPERCHARGED GODZILLA (yes I stole the name from the Trendmasters toy line, they’d have to exist in this century to sue me plus no one is paying me for this).

Godzilla charges towards Ghidorah, who is too stunned to react, and Godzilla plows into him, knocking him backwards, scoring blow after blow like a sumo barrage. Humans around the world watching the fight via news footage, Monarch satellite feeds, what have you, erupt into cheers. Godzilla is moving with unnatural speed, his claws carving new wounds into Ghidorah before the old ones heal. Ghidorah manages to shove him backwards using all three necks/heads, and attempts to take flight, but Godzilla grabs his twin tails and SLAMS him down to the ground, onto his back. Godzilla STOMPS his chest with one foot, roaring down at him dominantly. Ghidorah strikes with a gravity beam to Godzilla’s face, and it’s on target. Godzilla staggers backwards, wiping at his eyes. Ghidorah gets to his feet. The two face off. Ghidorah is still bigger, as his wings are spread wide to illustrate this fact. As if on cue to even the odds, Mothra hovers into view on Godzilla’s left, and Rodan stands sneering to his right – this is the first time Rodan is seen standing upright since his reveal, showing he is hurting. This has to look AWESOME. Flames and broken buildings surrounding everyone. Lightning and fire in the sky.

Ghidorah fires, Mothra flies out of the way, and Rodan cries in pain as he temporarily takes flight to do the same. Two of Ghidorah’s heads are tracking – and firing at- Mothra, the other is after Rodan. Big mistake. Godzilla FINALLY is able to charge and unleash an atomic blast, striking Ghidorah’s torso. It nearly knocks Ghidorah down, and Rodan and Mothra both take the opportunity to attack – Mothra with her ‘feet’/claws, Rodan with his sharp beak. Ghidorah is on the defensive, backpeddling. He hunches down close, necks and wings folding around him, then ‘explodes’ everything outwards with a roar, forcing the flying monsters away from him.

The three heads each make a strange sound, which come together in demonic harmony to create a new noise. Godzilla covers his ears. Mothra and Rodan cannot do so – and pay the price. Their eyes go black, and they stop attacking Ghidorah…. And go to his side, in a mockery of the earlier scene of them joining Godzilla. Godzilla tilts his head in confusion, lip curled into a snarl. Mothra and Rodan rush forward and attack him; they are being mind controlled by Ghidorah, much like the Monarch personnel were at the Arctic base when Ghidorah was still leeching the planet’s energy. It takes an incredible amount of power and focus to control both monsters, and Ghidorah himself is unmoving, eyes closed.

Rodan pelts Godzilla with globs of magma, which sizzle against his scales. Godzilla growls and brushes the flaming red goo off his chest and shoulder, and prepares an atomic blast for Rodan, but Mothra appears from overhead, dusting Godzilla with her paralyzing pollen. Godzilla’s hands claw at his throat, as he is unable to breathe, and he slowly falls to the ground. Lightning strikes Ghidorah from the clouds, fueling his power, as Rodan and Mothra hover over Godzilla. Rodan continues pelting him with burning lava.

Feeling his body seize from the continued rain of dust from Mothra’s wings, Godzilla summons up the energy for one more furious, defiant roar. It shakes the Earth and Heavens….and breaks the hold Ghidorah had over Mothra and Rodan. Ghidorah is not of this world; he does not belong. He is an invader. The fellow Earth monsters recognize the call of their leader. Ghidorah’s eyes open into slits, unamused. It will take him a moment to recover. Mothra ‘nuzzles’ against Godzilla in apology. Rodan bobs his head then looks away, too prideful. Godzilla doesn’t care. The Earth monsters gather themselves and attack as one once again.

The Earth monsters have the numbers advantage, and Ghidorah is on the ropes, but having drained ALL of Godzilla’s energy when they first met, Ghidorah’s healing abilities seem too much to overcome. They simply cannot kill him, and where Rodan, Mothra, and eventually even Godzilla will tire – King Ghidorah shows no fatigue, only malice. All of Japan is being leveled around them.

Ghidorah has had enough. He grabs Rodan and flings him away like a toy. Mothra has to fly away to avoid being blasted. With Godzilla’s allies scattered, Ghidorah snatches him up and takes to the air. Godzilla will not go quietly this time, and he claws and bites at Ghidorah all the way. Godzilla’s fins glow as he prepares a point blank atomic blast, but Ghidorah notices and flings Godzilla downwards, sending him crashing into the huge Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Godzilla disappears in the wreckage. Ghidorah lands.

Mothra screeches in anger and flies towards Ghidorah from behind. Ghidorah turns and catches her; his left head’s mouth clamps down on Mothra’s right wing. The right head’s jaws close around the left. The center head smiles into her panicked eyes – and the outer heads violently pull apart, tearing Mothra’s beautiful, luminous wings from her body. They flutter useless to the ground. Ghidorah tosses her bleeding body straight into the air, and tears through it with three gravity bolts. Mothra’s body explodes in a shower of light, which ascends into the sky.

Mothra is dead.

Rodan lands near Godzilla’s impact site, trying to dig him out of the rubble. He looks behind him to witness Mothra’s demise, and his efforts become more desperate. There is no sign of Godzilla. The Atragon has arrived in the harbor. Gordon fires a volley of missiles that detonate against Ghidorah’s wings, but he pays them no mind. The space monster just keeps moving forward, stalking Rodan.

It’s almost Jason Voorhees-like the way that Ghidorah suddenly appears behind Rodan. Rodan squawks and attempts to take flight, but Ghidorah pounces, knocking Rodan to the ground on his back, with Ghidorah’s feet landing on his wings. (Kind of like a kaiju sized version of Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Lou Thesz press). Rodan cries out as the bones in his wings are shattered.

“Isn’t there anything we can do?!” Yukiko screams over the chaos on board the Atragon. Gordon smiles calmly. “As a matter of fact….there is.” He punches a command into the console, and the Atragon angles upwards, shooting out of the water and TAKING FLIGHT. A panel in the craft’s front end opens and a huge DRILL emerges, spinning into action.

“HANG ON! WE’RE GONNA GO RIGHT INTO ‘EM!” Gordon roars, flying the Atragon towards Ghidorah in a kamikaze run. Ghidorah’s wings begin to flap, and Godzilla explodes upwards from underneath the rubble, grappling with Ghidorah to stop him from taking off. He tries to hold Ghidorah still to take the drill’s impact, but Ghidorah uses his mass to reposition Godzilla so the drill plunges into GODZILLA’S chest.

“NO!!!!!!!” “STOP!!!!” “TURN IT OFF!!!!” “REVERSE!!!!” everyone screams above the craft, as Godzilla cries out as chunks of his flesh and sprays of blood are scattered by the drill. The drill finally stops, and Godzilla glares DIRECTLY at Gordon through the view screen. His claws seize the Atragon, and he pulls the craft free of him and throws it aside with a furious snarl. The exertion from this makes Godzilla slump weakly. The cavity in his chest is deep, nearly piercing his heart.

Gordon curses as the thrusters have been damaged by Godzilla. “We’re done.” Brody says bitterly. Godzilla falls forward, blood pooling underneath him. Mothra is dead, and Rodan hasn’t moved except to just barely breathe.

“No.” Gordon says quietly. “Not yet.”

The large man rises from his chair, his battle-weary bones creaking and popping. This isn’t his first rodeo, but it may be his last. He removes a trenchcoat from the back of his chair and puts it on, along with a cap.

“Just what do you intend to do, Captain?” Serizawa asks, watching in awe. He knows he is seeing something ominous.

“If I’m gonna die here… I’m gonna die on my feet, Doc, with a sword in my hand.” He says as calmly as one might discuss their weekend plans, taking down the curved blade from its place of reverence on the wall.

“You’re insane.” Brody says.

“No. I’m…disappointed.” Gordon admits as he walks towards the elevator shaft that will carry him to the Atragon’s top escape hatch.

“Because we hit Godzilla?” Yukiko asks.

“Nah. Because that big lizard is stealing all my thunder.” Gordon responds with a grin over his shoulder, blade in his hand. “It’s time Monster Zero met the other Big G around here.” Gordon said, hitching up his pants.

“Is that a dick joke?” Yukiko asked, rolling her eyes.

“You’d think so, but……no. It isn’t.” the Captain said with seriousness the others didn’t know he possessed, as he stepped onto the elevator and disappeared.

The Atragon was a marvelous invention, designed for war, study, and rescue. Ironically, with Earth’s monsters dead and dying, it was the rescue function that Captain Gordon used, activating the craft’s external speakers as he barked a challenge into them, announcing his arrival on the exterior of the crashed super-sub.

“HEY, GHIDORAH! That’s what they call you, right? All I see is three heads, two tails, but no BALLS. Now, how does that work?” Gordon sneered. A match flared in the darkness as he lit a cigar, he shook out the flame and tossed the match away, blowing a cloud of smoke before him. Hell, to Captain Gordon, he WAS a giant fire breathing fucking monster.

Ghidorah turned from Godzilla to investigate the new sound. His six eyes narrow to slits, finding something small and loud on top of the crashed Atragon. He approached.

“Thaaaaaat’s right. Look at you; you think you’re hot shit because you tore up a butterfly, stepped on a lizard? Kid, I take more impressive SHITS than what I see in front of me. KING Ghidorah? I think you’re a Queen. Princess, really. Who the fuck let you on Captain DOUGLAS FUCKING GORDON’S PLANET, ANYWAY!?”

Ghidorah’s triple necks snaked down, surrounding Gordon. Sweat began to bead on his brow. The heads chittered amongst themselves, looking to one another as if discussing what to do with the amusing little thing. The center head drew within two feet of Gordon, sniffing him as the other two heads kept arguing.

“Now ain’t that rude? SPEAK ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER!” Gordon snarls, as the light glints off his blade, as he lashes out, delivering a series of precision strikes. The blade slices a patch of cuts into Ghidorah’s center snout. It is tall and wide enough to turn several men into ribbons. Ghidorah barely blinks, and the wounds close, flow of black blood drying up. Ghidorah’s heads nod to one another, and his jaws open and lunge forward. Gordon doesn’t flinch as death comes….

…..and goes.

Ghidorah’s eyes widen as his jaws snap shut on almost empty air, snapping the cigar right out of Gordon’s mouth. GODZILLA is up, and dragging him backwards by the tails. “Nice one, big guy, y-you got this, right?” Gordon scrambles back down the hatch, muttering “shit shit shit shit shit” as he goes, knowing full well how lucky he got. Godzilla and Ghidorah are wrestling all around, and the Atragon is right in the middle of it. “Did you guys see that? That big ol’ three headed pussy was shakin’ in his sparkly gold boots when I-“

Gordon stopped mid-sentence when he returned to the bridge, and realized what was about to happen. The craft had been more damaged by Godzilla than he had realized, it was literally falling apart, and a massive chunk of steel was hanging by a thread, about to flatten Yukiko.

“GET DOWN, KID!” Gordon roars, diving forward to knock her out of the way. There was no time to warn her.

When the dust settles, Yukiko is fine, knocked several feet out of danger. Gordon is down, grunting in pain. The wreckage has him pinned down from his legs down. Brody, Serizawa and Yukiko try to lift it but they can’t budge the heavy steel. “Don’t…bother…. Feels….great…. “ Gordon hissed through clenched teeth.

“He….saved me….” Yukiko blinked, tears in her eyes as she looked to her Uncle, but there was nothing he could do. Gordon knew he’d probably never walk again, but, all his vital organs were spared at least. Godzilla was in trouble as well; Ghidorah had constricted his necks around him, squeezing him, and was biting down on him with all three mouths, draining his energy again.

“If Ghidorah drains Gojira again….the power we gave him….. nothing will ever be able to stop him….” Serizawa said.

“Do we have any weapons online?” Brody asked. Gordon managed to instruct Yukiko on how to access the right screen. “One nuclear missile.” She said. “It won’t even scratch King Ghidorah……” she said, thinking out loud, as she sat in the captain’s chair, accessing the targeting computer. “Buuuuut…..I’m not shooting at him…..”

Yukiko locked onto Godzilla; specifically, the rapidly-closing hole in his chest from the Atragon’s drill. She’d have to work fast to beat Godzilla’s regenerative abilities, but if this worked….

“How the… hell… you know… how to do that?” Gordon managed. Yukiko flashed him a smile. “I watched you in case you needed backup.”

“Attagirl….” The gruff voice managed before Gordon slipped into unconsciousness. “Good luck…. Godzilla….” Yukiko said as she pressed the launch button. The last remaining missile streaked towards Godzilla, and just as the last bit of skin knitted together over the wound, it entered into his body and detonated next to his heart.

Godzilla closed his eyes and breathed deeply as the power washed over him. Ghidorah tried to pull away, burned by the intensity of it, but Godzilla’s body was giving off a short range biological magnetism, holding Ghidorah fast.

And then, as Godzilla roared, a massive shockwave emanated from his core, and an orb of pure atomic energy grew, expanding outwards from Godzilla, flinging Ghidorah away, a tangled mass of wings, necks and tails. Godzilla was feeling no pain, his eyes were glowing blue, and he pursued his foe. Ghidorah managed to stand, but only just. He fired a weak volley of rays at Godzilla, but he absorbed them and returned fire with an atomic blast from his mouth that once again knocked Ghidorah down.

Ghidorah’s wounds weren’t healing quite as fast anymore, and the pain he was feeling was real… and so was the fear.

He’d had enough.

Flapping his wings, Ghidorah darted straight up into the sky, heading for parts unknown… but Godzilla would have none of it. He fired a ray from his mouth at the sky, first blue, then turning to red, with a second smaller wave of energy spiraling around it. It connected with incredible force, pushing Ghidorah higher and higher into the sky, and try as he might, he could not disengage himself from it. Ghidorah was pushed up past the clouds, felt his scales burn away as he exited the Earth’s atmosphere. Godzilla continued firing, as Ghidorah was pushed past the stars…. Until he exploded with the force of a sun going nova.

Godzilla exhaled in a chuff, as if to say Now heal from THAT, why don’t you?

The King of Terror was Dead.

Long live the King… of the Monsters. Godzilla threw back his head and roared and roared. He surveyed the land, the destruction, the pain inflicted upon the Earth. Godzilla’s emotions were at war with one another… pride at his victory, sadness for the loss, and anger. Anger for EVERYTHING. A fiery anger that burned in his chest, and flowed through his veins like blood.

The anger was winning. Mothra was dead. The planet scarred. Ghidorah was gone; Godzilla couldn’t punish him further…

The only others complacent in this carnage…was mankind. Godzilla turned and faced the wreckage of the Atragon. His jagged spines began to illuminate.

“Oh…god….” Brody choked.

“What’s happening….?” Yukiko asked.

“Gomen ne, Gojira…” Dr. Serizawa apologized, closing his eyes and taking Yukiko’s trembling hand.

But before the end could come…a projection of the Cosmos appeared in the air, in front of Godzilla. He regarded them curiously, blinking his eyes. They seemed familiar somehow, and their influence calmed him. “All will be well.” They promised, and monster and human alike could hear their words. Godzilla clenched his fists and snarled…then relaxed. The great beast turned away and headed out to sea.

As the credits roll, various short clips are shown showing everyone’s fate AFTER the great war.

- Rodan survived, but was badly hurt. He was airlifted back to his volcanic home by Monarch to heal and rest.

- Captain Gordon survived as well, but for the time being has been confined to a wheelchair. His legs have been amputated below the knees; Yukiko is seen visiting him in a rehab center along with Brody and Serizawa.

- As for Godzilla, he’s once again disappeared, with even Monarch unable to locate him.

- In the jungles of Infant Island, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, a gigantic multi-colored egg is showered with a familiar light, and a Mothra larva bursts through the shell, chirping triumphantly.

- Before the credits roll in full, a pensive Serizawa is shown sitting at his desk, as the words of the Cosmos echo in his mind “The future however, can be changed. For the good or the bad. There are prophecies….even if Ghidorah is defeated….that Godzilla will….”

“Will…what?” Serizawa speaks out loud.
