Whenever I see favorite movie threads my brain always first goes to what I consider the best and most important movies ever made. Movies like Seven Samurai, Casablanca, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. But while those movies *are* some of the best and I thoroughly love and enjoy each of them, saying they’re my favorites isn’t really accurate. In truth, to list my favorite movies is less about how good they are and more about how much I personally enjoy them. They have to give me that warm happy feeling every time they come on. They have to be movies I watch over and over without growing weary of them. And while some of my favorite movies absolutely belong on a “best movies ever made” list, others absolutely do not. But they’re still like comfort food to me and that’s what makes them “favorite”. Anyway, enough blathering

1. The Empire Strikes Back (1980 theatrical version)
2. Star Wars (1977 or 1981 theatrical versions)
3. Godzilla (1984)/Godzilla 1985
4. Batman (1989)
5. Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster (U.S. or Japanese cut)
6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
7. Godzilla (1954)/ Godzilla King of the Monsters (1956)
8. King Kong (1933)
9. Lawrence of Arabia
10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

Do movies that are so terrible they are entertaining count? Manos is great. So is the "classic" Plan 9. Worse than all of those though is Things. It seems like it was made as a joke but I think it was unironically made. The creators had to be high or drunk or something while making it. The audio is dubbed like Manos but somehow worse. The effects, if I can even call it that or terrible toy props. It feels like a drunken hallucination and it is fantastic.

I have to add Zack Snyder's Justice League and Godzilla vs Kong to whatever my "Collection" is.

I can't stop thinking about either movie, and I can't wait until I can watch them over and over.

Both of them exist in such a perfect state for what each one is trying to be...one a "dark and serious" grandiose 4 hour superhero epic, the other a lean and mean, hyper focused and amplified monster mash. They are almost opposites in a lot of ways, but each one is so perfect at being what they are.

Each one also makes the preceding films in the series gain a lot of value...seeing Snyder's vision of the Justice League coming together makes Man of Steel and even Batman v Superman feel so much better in hindsight. We're able to see a larger picture here, a larger piece of the arc and story, and everything is elevated because of it.

Godzilla vs Kong cements the 4 films of the Monsterverse as being a shining example of sharing continuity WITHOUT sharing style. They all have a unique identity, and a unique perspective or setting for the story that makes each of them stand out as their own pillars of this 4 chapter Saga.

Justice League is a culmination of several films that share an artistic vision and were building to DC's greatest heroes coming together. They feel incredibly unified in tone, style, vision and continuity.

Godzilla vs Kong is the 4th unique chapter in the always evolving and progressing journey of the Monsterverse.

I could gush and ramble on and on about how much I love these films and how much they have reinvigorated my hope for the future of cinema when it seems like the industry and everyone in it has been on bad autopilot for nearly a decade.

Today I watched Mullholland Drive, and hoooo boy, it shook up the list. I haven't had a movie leave my gears spinning like this since... Well jeez, I don't even know. Maybe Dreams?

Not counting Godzilla movies, Id say some of my favorites in no particular order are
Pacific Rim, Annihilation, the first two Cloverfield films, the first three Jurassic Park films, the Star Wars prequels (yes, I like the prequels more than the originals, no, Im not going to apologize for it), Django Unchained, El Camino, Monster House, Friday the 13th films, some of the Alien films, MFKRZ, Coraline, any film with Tim Burton involved, the Dark Knight, and pretty much all of the stupid shitty Syfy films like Sharktopus, Dinoshark, Dinocroc vs Supergator, all of that utter garbage, I could watch that shit for hours.

Right now, the current list of more modern/recent (aka within the last decade) favorites looks something like (in random order):
Shin Godzilla
Mr. Holmes
Joker
Godzilla (2014)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
I unapologetically, wholeheartedly, and without a doubt hate Godzilla vs Kong.
