Pipe-Works Godzilla Trilogy Appreciation

So I've been thinking about it. And I just realized that it's been 11 years since Godzilla Unleashed first came out on the Wii, PS2, and Nintendo DS

So why not make a thread to really think about and appreciate all the things the Pipeworks Trilogy did both directly and indirectly for the Franchise, And all the fun times we've had with all 3?

Don't we already have a couple of these threads?

Anyway, I've only played STE and Unleashed (both versions); for me STE is my favorite Godzilla game. STE has a huge amount of nostalgia for me.

These games definitely gained more fans for the franchise; something I wish a new big budget game will do.

These games really did help shape my perception of the franchise and still remain some of my favorite games

They introduced the new members of the Fandom to Megalon, Jet-Jaguar, Biollante, and others. Years before their release to easily available DVD

And they were and still great fighting games

These games changed my perceptions of some monsters, and I don't think it should have. If these games didn't exist, I probably wouldn't have liked Megalon all that much, but I kind of appreciate him a little bit thanks to these. Same with Jet.

This is a weird effect, but I appreciate these games for that. STE is my favorite of the three.

When we got the GameCube, the first games I picked up were Super Smash Bros. Melee and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. Loved and enjoyed both for different reasons, then eventually made enough to pick up an Xbox for GDAMM and some Kiryu action. Custom soundtracks were a ton of fun in that game.

Fortunately, the Xbox investment continued to pay off as Godzilla: Save the Earth was announced. One of my absolute earliest memories I have of the game is viewing the E3 footage shot by Chris back in 2004, particularly "Video 2" (SpaceGodzilla versus Mechagodzilla 3/Kiryu). To this day, it remains one of the most nostalgic pieces of media for me, and I'll rewatch it every now and again and remember the excitement (and mild confusion with SpaceG's placeholder roars). Likewise, GSTE remains my favorite Godzilla game. So many hours poured into it, whether doing random Action runs or doing 4-player multiplayer battles... or attempting to input an infinite Rage code that didn't exist for some reason.

And lastly, while Wii GU isn't one of my faves, I still remember keeping tabs on IGN for those monster reveals (and that one time they posted a video titled "Gozirra!!" or something and people flipped out). How euphoric it was to learn SpaceGodzilla was returning, and Godzilla 1954 was actually included as a playable character! G1954 is definitely my favorite to play as in the game, even now.

I initially wanted a GameCube because I saw (and got) the Prima Strategy Guide for DAMM in EB Games. I got my GameCube and my copy of DAMM in July 2003. Strangely enough I got my GBA and Domination for Christmas 2002, I don't even think that I knew about Domination until I unwrapped it.

I remember seeing the first footage of DAMM before it was announced what systems the game would be on. I remember thinking "no matter what system this comes out on, I'll get it.". I ended up with Gamecube (the RE remake games being exclusive at the time was a nice bonus). It was awesome my first game on a big screen tv. The Xbox version was even better with a new monster, new level, updated textures, and custom soundtracks-even if it was missing a couple of things form the GC version.

StE I was really excited for and it was great to be able to chat with other fans while playing the game. Looking for glitches etc was fun too.

GU is my least played game and that whole project was about 60% fun. The relationships with Atari and Pipeworks hit a couple of potholes on this one but ultimately ended up being ok. I remember working myself super hard on this one. For the interview with the game's producer, Keehwan Her, I recorded it a little over a day after being in the emergency room for dehydration. If there's anything I'm really happy with is releasing the soundtrack as a Christmas present to everyone. The soundtrack itself was supposed to be a WalMart exclusive but they passed on it. So, I sort of rescued it from being tossed out. Granted there would have been game rips but I wanted fans to have the direct source, audiophile versions. Even the trailer music for the completionists. From there, Naruto and I went into Gvamp's project idea, "Project G".

It'd be nice if Atari wanted to remaster these games but since they feel that it's not worth the $ and effort just to get the license, they're sort of locked away in their own time capsule as it were. If there was EVER a time to have a Godzilla game out, especially now, it'd be now.

I loved DAMM and STE, STE especially as it felt like a "complete" DAMM if that makes any sense. G:U, while still fun and I feel underrated, still needs A LOT of work. I would absolutely kill for remasters, especially if it meant getting a fixed G:U with basic controls.

Oh, God, I obsessed over DAMM for months before finally getting a chance to buy it. I didn't have much to do back then, so I just spent hours and hours looking up every review and scrap of info I could find, and trying to force video clips to load a frame at a time on my crappy old dial-up connection. Good times. :lol: I would also say it did a lot to alter my perception of some of the monsters. I hadn't seen several of the movies yet, or at least hadn't seen them in many years, and I found the site for this game before becoming aware of places like Rodan's Roost and TK, so I learned/was reminded of a lot of their powers and abilities via reading about their moves in the game.


And then of course I played the game into the ground once I got ahold of it. STE, too. I'd still be playing them if my Xbox 360 was usable. G:U I never had any of the consoles for. I agree that a remaster of this trilogy would be a great idea. Or, y'know, a remake...

... You are a hero. I've been wanting to do infinite rage mode runs & multiplayer battles for years! Thank you!! :D Can also confirm the same codes work on Xbox, as expected. The Japanese code merely saved my game, though, and the last code didn't seem to work at all.

Honestly, for US fans, these games are as good as we've ever gotten out of Godzilla games. They are basic beat 'em up tournament fighters, but for fans, they are as close to "must play" as any other game we've gotten.

I also liked Obsidan and Krystallak, haha. It was nice to see some original kaiju show up.

I believe I had the same result when I tried to use those codes on my PS2 console. For some reason, they seem to behave differently when the game is ran on emulator but that doesn't really make any sense. I suppose more testing is in order to determine their true functions.

Maybe. If the Melee camera behaves the same way as it does in DAMM, you could switch to that camera and it should look like this.
