I never really thought he was supposed to be any specific spider (literally no spider spouts out web from the mouth like it does, aside from the spitting spider, but that's venom, not silk) and it's not really helped by the fact he's kind of a mutant than was transformed by radiation and isn't what he originally was suppose to be.

No, I did not make that up! It's a new species of spider just discovered last year. They named it after the kaiju of course. Actually the resemblance is pretty striking, at least color-wise. I tried and failed to include a pic, but it's easily Google-able.

I also found a tweet from I think one of the arachnologists who discovered and/or named it, by the name of Alireza Zamani, and he references web-spitting! Although from the wording I couldn't tell if he was referring to the real spider or just its fictional namesake. I think the latter. But that would be wild, wouldn't it?

Actually, there is spider silk in what the Scytotidae family spits.

And there's nothing that actually suggests Kumonga's a mutant. Saeko, the closet thing Sollgel has to a native, makes no comment and gives no reaction to Kumonga's monstrous size, only to it being awake, and Dr. Matsumiya's research indicates that Kumonga was indeed always gigantic.

Remember, in the Showa era, there are more natural monsters than there are radioactive mutants.

Oh dang! That's the family that the spider that I mentioned above is in, awesome! So naming it after Kumonga was indeed well deserved.
