Another region 1 Toho DVD presented in its original
aspect ratio, sound format, and most importantly language.
The second in ADV's Japanese horror DVD releases in
2001, the video quality is noticeably crisp. The print
used is in excellent quality, with no visible scratches
during the course of the movie. Artifacting isn't perfect,
the movie appears slightly grainy through out, but is
acceptable. The brightness is turned down a little,
making some scenes darker than they should be, but this
never manages to be bad enough to detract from the viewing
experience. The composition could have been better as
the colors aren't quite as vibrant as one would hope
for, this is most noticeable during the Toho logo with
its wide array of colors. The audio presentation is
flawless, and is presented in stereo. Extras are lacking
though, as the disc only feature ADV's own trailers
for their two Japanese horror films. Unfortunately the
English subtitles cannot be toggled off and on, this
shouldn't affect most English viewers enjoyment of the
film, but it still would have been nice. One last thing
to note is that the original Japanese title screen has
been replaced with ADV's English title for "The
Hypnotist," which in the end is neither bad
nor good. Bottom line is that this is a good transfer
of a English version of Hypnosis,
with a small number of uninteresting trailers thrown
in.
