In the early 1960s, Japan is still reeling from the aftereffects of the war. Families have been torn apart, women split from their husbands forever, and now outside influence is filtering into society. In a town near Tokyo, a large supermarket is blooming, forcing out the smaller grocery stores which have been around since before the war. One store, owned by the Morita family, is one under such a threat. It is run by the sister-in-law, Reiko, who husband died in the war. However, the family wishes its surviving son Koji to one day take over. Koji, however, insists of wasting his day gambling, getting intoxicated, and womanizing. The other members of the family, Reiko most of all, try to tempt Koji toward making use of his life. Finally, when accused of cowardice by Reiko, he confesses his true reason. And this confession, along with the incessantly morphing society around them, will eventually affect the Moritas forever.... |
