Kaito Kuroba, the "Phantom Thief Kid", is in the midst of stealing a giant diamond. The famous thief is acting out of character, though, utilizing a pistol and a boat. Detective Conan Edogawa attempts to pursue him, but is stopped when a sword destroys his skateboard. The slash is precise, splitting the skateboard in two, as Conan realizes the swordsman is Goemon Ishikawa XIII. This means the Kid is actually not the Phantom Thief, but Lupin the 3rd in disguise. Lupin is acting against his will, though, as Fujiko Mine has been taken hostage under the threat of death. The diamond was only a test for the kidnapper to gauge Lupin's skill. The real target is a gemstone named the Cherry Sapphire. Puzzled by Lupin's actions, the Tokyo Police consult Interpol's Koichi Zenigata, rival to Lupin. Despite Zenigata's warnings, though, Lupin manages to steal the sapphire while under disguise. Meanwhile, a famous Italian pop singer named Emilio Baretti happens to arrive in Japan. Conan realizes there is more to her appearance than meets the eye, as Daisuke Jigen of Lupin's gang is among her entourage...
